Fastest Under $20k: 1965 Factory Five Shelby Cobra Challenge Car

We've always said that you can get an awesome car without spending huge piles of your 401k (which is shedding cash at an alarming rate if you've been following the news recently) and set an arbitrary DT self imposed limit of $20k.  Sure, you could get a well equipped brand new Honda economy car...or you could get one of the most iconic automotive shapes in history with performance that'll match just about anything sub $100k.  Find this 1965 Factory Five Shelby Cobra Challenge Car offered for $19,999 in Long Beach, CA via craigslist. Tip from Erik202.

Needs Love: 1967 Volvo Amazon Wagon

This next car comes as a tip from Zach Z who writes: Actually doesn't look awful, but the lack of underside photos make harder to judge. The available M41 OD transmission is welcome, though a bit more work to convert - good discussion here and here . If it's just the floors and the engine is more than just shiny-paintenized, (and you can get the OD tossed in) may be worth asking price.  If not, dicker down a 1000-1500 and go to town! Find this 1967 Volvo Amazon Wagon offered for $4000 in West Pensacola, FL via craigslist.

Definition of Sketchy: 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano

The 75 (or Milano as it was known in the US market) was Alfa's last true rear-drive executive sedan, or it was until the launch of the recent Giulia sedan. But it was the last rear-drive sedan from Alfa Romeo before they were acquired by Fiat, so it's got that going for it...   Find this 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano offered for $1400 in Los Angeles, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Erik202.

Not Safe for Underwear: 1971 NSU 1200C

The NSU Typ 110 was first released into the wild in 1965 based on the Prinz 1000, but with plus sized dimensions and slightly more displacement.  In 1967 it received an upgraded rear-mounted 1200 cc air-cooled 4-cylinder engine and the name NSU 1200..but don't expect the 54 horsepower to be anything other than harrowing in modern traffic.  Find this 1971 NSU 1200C offered for $7,500 in Miami, FL. Tip from FuelTruck.

Blowd Up: 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow

Do you remember the time when Queen Elizabeth II was at a Kiss Concert and she was called up onto the stage and she started shredding on the electric guitar? Oh wait..that didn't happen, but this next car did.  Find this 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow here on eBay offered for $25,000 buy-it-now or make offer located in Damascus, MD.

So Many Pipes: 1986 Pontiac Fiero Ferrari Kit

The trick to pulling off a kit-car version of a Ferrari is to make something that is so obviously not a Ferrari that it is cool, or something that looks the part to fool 99% of the drivers on the road...this next car does a decent job of the latter, but you're gonna spend beaucoup bucks on chrome exhaust tip polish.  Find this 1986 Pontiac Fiero offered for $14,500 in Stockton, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

White Knight: 1992 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo

We all know the guy (or gal) who is obsessed with the 90s.  Always listens to U2, quotes Seinfeld, and rocks a Zach Morris hairdo with matching preppy sweater.  He probably drives a Camaro or C4 Vette...but it is probably because the dude isn't an investment banker and doesn't have much to spend on a car...but there are plenty of cheap awesome rides from the 90s that are better than a Chevy...like this 1992 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo offered for $12,000 in Kenosha, WI via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Original Mobster: 1967 Triumph 2000 Mk1

The Triumph 2000/2500/2.5PI was a mid-sized family saloon car built in the UK from 1963 through 1977. It featured stylish sheet metal penned by Giovanni Michelotti (BMW New Class, DAF/Volvo trucks, Triumph Spitfire, and various Ferrari/Maserati things) and guts assembled by the Triumph Motor Company. Find this 1967 Triumph 2000 Mk1 offered for $15,000 on the SF Bay Area craigslist but located near Portland, OR.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Imported for Dodge: 1986 Dodge Conquest Technica

Back in the mid 1980s if you wanted a Mitsubishi with a turbo engine in the front and rear wheel drive, you had four cars to choose from -- the Mitsubishi Starion, Dodge Conquest, Plymouth Conquest, and Chrysler Conquest...but they were really the same car with different badges. The biggest difference between models was the availability of an intercooler and widebody, but the best way to get the flatty narrow body and an intercooler is with the Technica version of the Conquest.  Find this 1986 Dodge Conquest Technica here on eBay offered for $5,900 buy-it-now or make-offer located in Dalton, WI with 4 days to go. Tip from SecondMouse.

Plainclothes: 2011 Ford Crown Victoria P71 Detective's Car

Ford's final foray into the fullsize body-on-frame segment was a curious mix of old and new - from 2003 - 2011 the Crown Victoria used an all new chassis and suspension, but kept the same old body it had since 1998, which really was just an evolution of the aero design model that debuted way back in 1992. The good ol' 4.6L Modular V8 soldiered on as well, but despite these similarities a final-generation Crown Victoria Police Interceptor feels almost nothing like riding in Grandpa's Vic. On top of that, the detective-spec models are quite attractive, built as they were with all the police goodies but wearing civilian paint colors for a more incognito look. Find this 2011 Ford Police Interceptor for sale near Portland, OR for $4,650 via craigslist.

Pond Scum- 1987 Oldsmobile 442

The 1987 Oldsmobile 442 was the swan song for the pseudo hotrod G-body coupe.  The 442 couldn't hold the Buick Grand National's jock strap in terms of outright speed, but it still was a desirable car.  These special models were fully equipped and had many options you would have thought should have come standard on car by 1987.  The warmed over 170 hp 307 was only good for mid 9 second 0-60 times and a 16 second 1/4 mile.  With all that said, Olds sold a ton of these cars and they are very easy to make faster in 2018.  Today's 442 has some light engine mods, but what really stands out is the shade of green it was painted.  Given the relatively low selling price, the putrid color scheme is not helping the resale value. Find this 1987 Oldsmobile 442 for sale in Woodbury Heights, NJ for $4,000 via craigslist.

Not Bad At All: 1972 MGB GT

I've got a formula for my perfect classic car -- it goes like this;  No serious rust, driveable home, spare parts included, interior that won't make my wife scream, trim mostly good, about $5k.  Yeah...not much on craigslist matches those requirements...BUT this next car is spot on.  Find this 1972 MGB GT offered for $5000 in Mesa, AZ via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

DTO: Volvo 242 Turbo - Group A Evolution - A Legit ETC/DTM Touring Car

Ok, it may not be Thursday anymore, but here at DT any day is Thorsday! Today we have a special treat - the ultimate Volvo 240. Regardless of price range, how often does an original touring car factory racer come up for sale from the Swedish stalwart? The answer is... not very. In 1983 Volvo decided to take on the likes of BMW, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Jaguar and other sporting brands who competed in the top level of touring car racing (that's production based cars bombing around road courses, if you're not familiar). They kicked some arsel in both the DTM and European Touring Car series, as a full-fledged factory team. The cars made around 350hp from their 2.1L turbocharged and water injected 4-cylinder Redblock engines. Find this 1984 -86ish Volvo 242 Turbo Group A race car for sale in Falkenburg, Sweden for an unspecified number of suitcases full of Kronor... via racecarsdirect.com.

Not A Slug: 1989 Nissan S-Cargo

The Nissan S-Cargo is a part of Nissan's Pike family of vehicles that were sold new in Japan and predated the early 2000s retro-style fad (PT Cruiser, Prowler, HHR, SSR etc). The S-Cargo looks like a washing machine with cartoon eyes, but it was a retro styled tribute to the Citroën 2CV Fourgonnette delivery van built on a modern unibody chassis from Nissan.  Even the name S-Cargo sounds like Escargot or snail in French. Find this 1989 Nissan S-Cargo offered for $4500 CAD ($3665 USD)  in Vancouver, BC via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!.

V8 Powaaaaah: 1990 Volvo 740 Wagon

The Volvo wagon V8 swap is a thing of legends.  It might not have been invented by the legendary Paul Newman, but he certainly put it on the map with the mythical story of the of puffer fed cars as told by Dave Letterman.  The Letterman V8lvo was featured on an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (now only available on Netflix, but one time an interweb free to watch series), and the Paul Newman Volvo was rediscovered by DT in 2013 and later purchased by Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars, who put together an episode or two about the car...but the trail runs cold after that point -- it'll probably re-emerge. But if you don't have $150k to spend on the real thing, you'll need to find a cheap alternative, like this 1990 Volvo 740 Wagon with V8 swap offered for  $5000 in Newark Valley, NY via craigslist. From Cory.

4th Tour: 1972 BMW 2002 with Ford 5.0

Remember that BMW 2002 that wasn't a BMW 2002?  No?  It was a tube frame chassis with some BMW parts hanging out on top of a small block Ford V8 and it went from $6k...then $10k..and finally for $15 with a new paint job each time -- just read up on this article from 2013.  The beast is back for sale -- find this 1972 (or 1969?) BMW 2002 offered for $11,000 in Dallas, TX via craigslist.  Tip from Jack.
