Not Safe for Underwear: 1971 NSU 1200C

The NSU Typ 110 was first released into the wild in 1965 based on the Prinz 1000, but with plus sized dimensions and slightly more displacement.  In 1967 it received an upgraded rear-mounted 1200 cc air-cooled 4-cylinder engine and the name NSU 1200..but don't expect the 54 horsepower to be anything other than harrowing in modern traffic.  Find this 1971 NSU 1200C offered for $7,500 in Miami, FL. Prinz of Sharpness: 1960 NSU Sport Prinz

I don't get it.  NSU is a rare make.  The Sport Prinz is a cool model.  And this next one is a scruffy pile of parts, but it is bidding for pauper money.  Those guys on that other site would easily drop big Trump sized piles of cash on a restored Sport Prinz, so why no love for this scruffy looking pile of "ran when borked?"  Find this 1960 NSU Sport Prinz here on eBay bidding for $2,550 with a few hours to go, located in quirky Albuquerque (home of the inventory of the querty keyboard), NM.

The NSU Prinz was a little air cooled rear engine powered oddball that was built in West Germany from 1958 through 1962.  Even the sporty fastback Sport Prinz version wasn't particularly quick in any sporting competition, but this next example isn't your grandfather's Prinz.  Find this 1958 NSU Sport Prinz Custom here on eBay offered for $3,000 buy-it-now in Greeley, CO with 2 days to go.

Popular culture regularly tells us that it is good to be different.  Bristol-Myers Co ran a commercial ad campaign a few that described Nuprin as-- Little. Yellow. Different. Better. Unfortunately the product didn't do well in the Asian communities because they felt it was a racial slur and Nuprin was ultimately a failure, but the need to be different continues to be a driving force in day-to-day decision making. When somebody brings up the rotary engine, the mind naturally wanders to Mazda and its well known use of the Wankel rotary starting in 1967 with the Cosmo 110S and ending with the last RX-8 to roll off the assembly line in 2012.  However, it was German based NSU Motorenwerke AG (later absorbed into Audi/VW) that allowed engineering genius Felix Wankel to design and release the first production rotary engine into an automobile, first in the '64 NSU Spider and then the '67 Ro 80.  Find this 1969 NSU Ro 80 currently bidding for $6,600 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go on ebay, located in St. Louis, MO from the fantastically cool collection at Moto eXotica.

Update: reader IgnatiusReilly tipped us off that this car was previously sold for $24,200 at the Auctions America Auburn Spring auction in May 2014. The auction listing says it was from the John Scotti collection, allegedly the largest Canadian car collection ever sold at auction. Thanks Ig!

The NSU Prinz was a small rear-engined West German built city car, intially powered by an inline-twin cylinder air cooled engine, something that was better fit to power a motorcycle.  Production started in 1957 and ended when Volkswagen Auto Group acquired NSU and merged it into one ring of the Audi group.  The Prinz was a unique car, but it conflicted with the VW Type 1, Type 3 as well as Audi's 50 series, so it was canceled in 1973.  Find this 1967 NSU Prinz 1000TT currently bidding for $3,103 reserve-not-met on ebay with less than 24 hrs to go, located in Santa Clarita, CA.

I saw this on REDACTED this morning and recognized it as a car that was parked near my inlaw's house for over 20 years.  I have literally obsessed over getting it for a decade.  It's a 1967 NSU Typ 110 (ed note: currently bidding for $465 on ebay with 1 day to go).  Here's some information above what is in the eBay advertisement: The car sat next to an abandoned saw mill in Greely Hill, CA and was last registered in the late 80s (think the sticker said ’87). The many times I stopped by and looked at it it has no rot-through in the body. There is a square hole about 3×5 inches cut into the driver’s rear wheel well, not rot, just a cut. Also a long, shallow dent on driver’s side door. Taillight lenses are missing, but can be bought from a company in Germany. I never got to open the engine lid to turn it. The floors appeared solid. It actually held water in the footwells (leading me to believe the pans are fairly solid). Seat covers and interior are shot, although gauge pod is in good shape. The dust all over it is ash from the recent Rim Fire in Yosemite (the car literally was 5 miles from the SE fire line). The passenger side paint was fairly shiny as it was shaded by a small pine tree.
Most of the car’s body is very straight and rust-free.
