When you start discussing mid-engine all-wheel-drive vehicles, most people think of cars like the Lamborghini Diablo VT or Audi's Quattro equipped R8. However, Toyota beat them to the mid-engine all-wheel-drive setup with manual transmission (or supercharger) way back in 1990 with the launch of the XR10 series Previa minvan. The fifth generation Dodge Coronet was built on a shared intermediate sized platform with the Plymouth Belvedere/Savoy/GTX/Road Runner and Dodge Charger from 1965 through 1970. The Coronet 500 did not indicate an engine size, but was simply the destination for the top of the line Coronet that included many features that were optional in less versions. A Fistful of Yen was a subplot in the epic 1977 John Landis (Animal House, Blues Brothers, Coming To America, Spies Like Us, Three Amigos!) directed Kentucky Fried Movie. For some reason I can't even look at a Daihatsu Charade without thinking of the classic line from Loo (who is a Bruce Lee look-alike with an Elmer Fudd speech style) "What was that? In 1989 Porsche introduced yet another version of their long in the tooth 928 -- it was called the 928 GT and featured slightly more horsepower, a sportier suspension and 9 inch wide rear wheels. The 928 GT was a small glimpse of the awesome that would come with the final version of the 928 called the GTS...but I'm getting ahead of myself. A particularly interesting subculture in the Japanese car modification scene is something called Bosozuku style, which combines the radical styling with crazy long exhaust pipes (from Japanese motorcycle gangsters) and slammed looks. There really isn't anything quite like it in the USA, but occasionally you'll find a car stateside that has been created in homage to the Japanese custom scene. In the late '50s a entrepreneur by the name of Jim Kellison starting living the ultimate car builder's dream. He started building his own car body design called the Kellison J-4 that was designed to use Corvette running gear to complete the build. Today's example has been heavily modified by various owners and sports a Pontiac drivetrain, but looks like a totally awesome and unique ride for anything near the current bidding price. The MG 1100 was developed as part of BMC's (British Motor Corp's) ADO16 (Amalgamated Drawing Office project number 16) sedan platform. The combined ADO16 family included a fleet of Pininfarina styled vehicles,
including the Austin 1100/1300, MG 1100/1300, Austin America, Riley

The mystery Photo published in this Monday's Left-Handed Spanner was almost instantly identified by a Saabvant and first time anonymous commenter who subsequently picked the name Monsaabster. You can read the entire Saab story in the comments; it is really a great story of an anonymous commenter finding his name --a real DT tearjerker. Anyway, the car in question is a 1959 Saab Monster, a gutted Saab 93 that used twin inline-3 two stroke engines combined for 1.5 liters that pushed 138 horsepower into the front wheels. In 1964 Chrysler introduced a new edition of their Imperial Crown high end luxury sedan. The new version put to bed the 50's tailfins and chrome of the Virgil Exner designed Imperials, and the Elwood Engel designed 1964 model featured slab sides (you might recognize them from Engel's '61 Continental design) and razor-edged lines. It was far more modern looking car with thick C-pillars and thick chrome emphasizing the top of the fenders, and few cars from the 1960s match its street presence per dollar ratio. The Magnum kit car uses a tubular chassis and fiberglass body with air cooled Volkswagen components (probably Beetle, but it isn't entirely clear from a quick interweb search). However, the fiberglass body does a decent job of looking like a real Ferrari and this would look great in your garage to make your neighbors think you are a big deal.
