If you've spent any time behind the wheel of a modern Toyota Camry you won't be impressed by much of anything. Reliable...sure...but fun? Nope. Not even in the slightest. As a fellow fan (and owner) of home made junk and the Buick SportWagon, I have to admit that I am intrigued by this next car. The concept of a shift-it-yourself Buick Sportwagon with some Wildcat GrandSport style grill is cool...but the DIY interior and manual single piston drum brakes hold this thing back...well..those brakes won't hold much back...but you get my drift. I'm not ashamed of my love of the Buick Skylark. It is such a piece of automotive history -- from the beginning when it shared a platform with the Pontiac Tempest and Olds F-85, and then when it was another piece of the GM A-body arsenal -- it has always been such a badass piece of American iron...except...wait. What sort of unholy beast have we summoned from the depths of the 10th circle of X-body haides have we found? Why...just why...did the post fuel crisis corporate bean counters at GM try and convince a single Buick buyer that this was a Skylark? The Buick Riviera appeared on the automotive landscape in 1963 as a personal luxury coupe on the E-body platform (later shared with the Eldorado and Toronado), but in rear-drive only configuration. A few decades later the turbocharged version of the Riviera shared its V6 with Buick's Regal cousin (and the LeSabre had a turbo V6 version too), but the Grand National has a cult following and culty prices to boot. The fourth generation Chevrolet Caprice was sold from 1991 to 1996 as the last hurrah for the Caprice name launched in 1964 (until the Caprice name was brought back for fleet use in 2011). The Caprice Wagon shares most of its parts with the Buick Roadmaster Wagon but it lacks the faux wood sides, which ain't a bad thing at all. This next example is offered as a "1A2" package cop version and by 1995 it was powered by the mean LT1 V8, so this unicorn gets a two horns up from DT. Few cars elicit that "wow, you never see these on the road anymore" like an 80s Oldsmobile, particularly something that wasn't commonplace when new, like an Toronado Trofeo. The fourth and final generation Toronado was introduced in 1986 on a smaller unibody E-body platform shared with the Buick Riviera and Cadillac Eldorado. The switch to transverse engine layout without any available V8 did not go unnoticed by the old guys in the room...but the fact that you'd be the only one in your car club with one of these makes it sorta interesting. The original Oldsmobile Omega was a badge engineered version of the X-platform Chevrolet Nova and was sold in two generations 1973-1974 and 1975-1979. The Omega was more luxurious than the Nova it was based on, but it still rode on the same basic chassis and is just as wonderful or horrible depending on who you talk to about it. Novas in good shape demand some coin, but the equivalent Oldsmobile Omega (or Buick Apollo or Pontiac Ventura) are offered for cheap. I've had some discussions with other DT talking heads about what year was the pinnacle of automotive perfection. To me the answer is easy -- 1965, the year that you could buy an original Fastback Mustang or a gorgeous C2 Corvette or a 65 Buick Roadmaster unencumbered by smog equipment or safety stuff, but DT's cub reporter Hunsbloger thinks that 1967 was a better year because most cars now had dual circuit brakes, seat belts in both front and rear and four-way flashers -- a minimum he believes for safety on modern roads or track days. This next car is something close to my heart...and I'm genuinely curious to see how much it gets when the gavel hits the block, because it isn't too far from the '65 SportWagon that I've got sitting in my garage. Unfortunately, this one has the lower spec Wildcat 310 V8 (instead of the upgraded 4bb Wildcat 355) and it has non boosted single circuit drum brakes (yikes!!) and no AC or power steering...but it does have what appears to be a nice coat of light blue paint and the interior isn't bombed out. For someone who doesn't mind adding a few safety upgrades (power boosted dual-circuit brake upgrade kits are cheap and easy to install...just some time needed) it could be a great weekend cruiser. We were supposed to have flying cars by now. Everyone promised it. I've watched Blade Runner and Running Man many times (both were set in a 2019 future) and they showed all kinds of hovering and flying cars, but here I am and the closest thing is a LiteStar/Pulsar that was built in the 1980s. If we could just convince these millennials to stop playing Fortnite and focus on engineering flying cars, I'd by floating around in the sky right now instead of hacking on a keyboard. The Triumph Spitfire was a diminutive, featherweight, two-seat sports car assembled in Coventry, UK from 1962-1980. A competitor of the Austin-Healey Sprite & MG Midget, the Spitfire was only available with a small inline four cylinder engine and didn't get the bigger inline sixes available to the GT6 or TR6. Don't worry, lots of folks over the years figured out how to shove the extra two cylinders into the Spitfire body, but today this next car has an extra 4 cylinders shoved under the hood.
