The fourth generation Chevrolet Caprice was sold from 1991 to 1996 as the last hurrah for the Caprice name launched in 1964 (until the Caprice name was brought back for fleet use in 2011).   The Caprice Wagon shares most of its parts with the Buick Roadmaster Wagon but it lacks the faux wood sides, which ain't a bad thing at all. This next example is offered as a "1A2" package cop version and by 1995 it was powered by the mean LT1 V8, so this unicorn gets a two horns up from DT. Ruminations on a Roadmaster

Let me start this with a disclaimer: I never thought I'd be a "V8 guy." My family history in cars is heavily biased towards small, fun to drive imports or practical utility vehicles with 4 or 6-cylinder engines. Dad had an Alfa Giulia, a Fiat 124 Spider, and now cruises in a Nissan XTerra. His dad drove an MGA coupe followed by a Cortina, a Dodge Colt, and a Triumph. Growing up, I got shuttled around in a FWD Mazda GLC sedan and various Toyota pickups. I read Hot Rod and Automobile magazines and lusted after big V8 domestic iron, but never had much firsthand experience with that type of vehicle.

Hubcaps & Blackwalls: 1995 Buick Roadmaster

The last General Motors body on frame car the was sold in 1996.  Police, taxi drivers, and most DT readers mourned the loss and had to migrate over to the last of the Mohicans: Ford's Panther platform.  The Buick Roadmaster and cousin Cadillac Fleetwood are the only cars that almost look normal (proper even?) with white wall tires and a vinyl roof.  The B-body cars are old school in a number of ways, but their stock 235/70/15 tire size stands out most in comparison to today's rubber band spec tires.  Find this 1995 Buick Roadmaster for sale in Westbury, NY area for $3,850 via craigslist.

Cleanmaster: 1993 Buick Roadmaster w/ 38k miles

The Buick Roadmaster certainly has its fans around these parts; the body-on-frame finale of GM's Land Yacht division was available as a 4-door sedan, yes, but more importantly as a full-on wagon, akin to the Chevy Caprice. Ford may have made the Crown Victoria until 2011, but this whale you see here is the last of the real traditional American wagons. 1994 Ford Aspire vs Buick Roadmaster

All but gone from our roads, the Ford Aspire was a joint development between Kia and Ford with a bunch of Mazda parts thrown in from the old Festiva/Kia Pride. The Aspire was never envisaged as cheap transportation for the second and third world, it was designed for developing parts of Appalachia and the Ozarks.
