Take My Lira Now: 1979 Alfa Romeo GTV Velocissima Twin Spark Swap

Alfa Romeo 116 series four cylinder car values have languished for a long, long time.  Rust, notchy gear boxes, and tepid performance have sent many potential Alfa buyers over to the later GTV6 models as they generally are a more fun and compelling car to own.  Today's feature car turns that notion on its head with it's tidy condition, being a rare model, awesome alloy wheels, mint interior (with the good dash layout), and later model twin spark engine swap.  The euro twin spark four cylinder engine at 146hp is good for almost 50% more power than the stock spica injected engine and should make this car hustle in modern traffic.  Find this 1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV  for sale in Stonington, CT for $15,000 via craigslist.

Track Puffer: 1985 Merkur XR4ti Terminator Swap

The euro inspired Merkur XR4ti was similar to the SVO Mustang in size and purpose.  Both cars shared the 2.3 turbo 4 cylinder Lima engine which was a capable performer in its day.  However, today's feature track car ditched it's 2.3 engine for a 4.6 supercharged V8 from a 2003 Mustang Terminator which was the Hellcat of it's day at 390hp.  Seeing that going fast and having a competitive car costs real money, buying a proven car that needs a bit of TLC could potentially save the buyer a lot of coin.  Find this 1985 Merkur XR4ti for sale in Newtown, CT for $9,000 via craigslist.

Hold Onto The Steering Wheel: 1999 Nissan Maxima Turbo

The 1995-99 Nissan Maxima were the last cleanly styled generation of Maxima.  The cars that followed this generation were more powerful, but were noticeably uglier cars.  The Maxima started the tag line "four door sports car" in the early 1990's.  Today's bright red feature is the sport model SE, but has bonus of a turbo kit and supporting mods added to the decent 190 hp 3.0 V6 engine.  The usual hotrod move is to swap in a later 3.5 engine into these cars.  Find this 1999 Nissan Maxima for sale in Houston, TX for $6,000 via craigslist.  Tip from JG 750.

Weird Spec: 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass S 5 Speed

If I mentioned 5 speed manual equipped coupes from the 1970's, brands like Alfa Romeo, Lotus, or BMW would first come to mind.  Imagine my surprise when finding this factory 5 speed Cutlass S.  You could, but not many did option out the small 260 ci Olds V8 with a 5 speed manual on all models except for the Supreme and wagon.  The 260 was a reaction to the 70's fuel crisis and shared the same stroke as the larger Olds 350.  The Borg Warner sourced 5 speed could likely be paired up with the larger 350, but am not sure how robust they were.  These Colonnade models ended in 1977 and gave way to the even smaller G-body coupes.  Find this 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass S for sale in Lexington, MA for $6,900 via craigslist.

DT readers who live in parts of the country that do not use road salt in the winter will breathe a sigh of relief after reading this piece.  Parts cars are a great resource for keeping other cars on the road if you actually get around to using them that way.  Today's pair of Jags is what happens when you double down on a problem and then do not get around to actually fixing anything.  Two needy supercharged XJR's for cheap is a tough sell logistically for most any buyer- two trips for pick up, two parking spaces, double the issues to address, etc.  Find these 1999 and 2000 Jaguar XJR's for sale in Rowley, MA for $2,000 via craigslist.

Massive Engine Bay But Rear Mount Turbo? 1989 Volvo 240

It's Thorsday folks and we have quite the Swede for you today.  The dollars per level of crazy is off the charts on this one.  This Volvo 240 build is sort of a more discreet budget version of this Corbin Goodwin bonkers Rolls Royce.   Many brick Volvo's feature American V8 swaps swapped into their huge engine bay.  The 240's did come with a factory turbo 4 cyl engine option in the mid 80's and later turbo redblock turbo engines from the 940 are commonly swapped into later NA 240's.  With all that said, today's seller took the path less traveled by has fabbing up a insane home brew rear mount turbo (see pics below) set up in the trunk with little regard for passengers foot space, any attempt at hiding the set up, and trunk cargo capacity.  Find this 1989 Volvo 240 for sale in Tucson, AZ for $2,000 via craigslist.  Tip from Lynn.

Northstar Fauxrari: 1988 Pontiac Mera

Another week, another Fiero...But wait, this is not your ordinary Fiero!  This one has a lot going for it: 88 suspension redesign, 32v Northstar V8 engine swap and it is a real Mera conversion which was actually sold through Pontiac dealers.  With the escalating prices of 308 Ferrari's this 300hp Mera presents a valid counterpoint for those with more modest means.  In terms of body kitted Fiero's, the Mera is at the top of the food chain.  Find this 1988 Pontiac Fiero for sale in Virginia Beach, VA for $13,840 via craigslist.  Tip from Fuel Truck.

Large And In Charge: 1967 Cadillac Eldorado

Raised White Letter Tires: 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout

Tipper Rock On had this to say about DT's newest project car, "Vince’s new wagon is very sporty, but this Hornet is not too shabby."  The wagon version of the Hornet was called the Sportabout which proves automakers were allergic to the term wagon even way back then.   The Hornet here is about as rocking as it gets for a 70's estate- big 360 engine, Cragar wheels with white letter tires, rally striping, and orangey-red exterior paint.  Find this 1976 AMC Hornet for sale in Shreveport, LA for $7,000 via craigslist.  

VVL Egg: 1993 Nissan NX2000

The Nissan B13 SE-R and NX Hatch were two cars that received near universal praise in the press and from enthusiasts for being fun to drive and extremely easy to modify.  These models are prone to rust which is the main reason why you see so few decent examples up for sale any more.  Being rare does not always translate into being valuable though.  Today's reasonably priced NX2000 has been modified to excel at autocross, is said to be rust free, and has the tasty SR20VE engine swapped in.  Find this 1993 Nissan NX2000 for sale in Tuckahoe, VA for $3,500 via craigslist.  Tip from Fuel Truck.

First Turbo: 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder

I can only imagine what my wife would do with my project C36 AMG if I went to the big junkyard in the sky.  Inheriting cars is a tricky thing for the new owner as they may not share the same enthusiasm or have the knowledge to keep a car going.  Today's seller has done an admirable job keeping this turbo charged Corvair roadworthy, but is now looking for a enthusiastic new owner to take up the stewardship.  This looks to be a real original survivor car that is rarely found.  Find this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair for sale in Darien, CT for $8,500 via craigslist.

Don't Call Me Scamp: 1983 Dodge Rampage

The Chrysler L-platform was a short lived experiment from 1982-84 into the Ute world.  The Dodge Rampage and Plymouth Scamp didn't exactly set the world on fire with roughly 40,000 cars sold over three years.   With all the 2018 interest in camino style of cars and the lack of available options, there should be someone interested in a gently used Dodge Rampage.  There are a myriad of performance turbo engines and drivetrain parts that could help this car move with much more gusto.  Find this 1983 Dodge Rampage for sale in Hinsdale, VT for $4,000 via craigslist.  Tip from Rich.

Puffer On A 4x4: 1998 Range Rover HSE Cameron Concepts Supercharged

A little more power is welcome in most any vehicle, but especially helpful in moving a 5,000 lb British SUV.  Cameron Concepts out of San Diego, CA put out a CARB legal supercharger and factory style upgrade kit in 1997.  The Rover engine was a descendant of the old Buick 215ci.  These 4.6 engines had a reputation for head gasket and cylinder liner issues.  There is not a ton of information online about the company or the specs on the kit other than it uses a Eaton supercharger.  The company itself is no longer as its founder Peter Cameron passed away in 2007.  Find this 1998 Range Rover HSE 4.6 for sale in Holyoke Highlands, NY for $5,500 via craigslist.

Mom's V8 Benz: 1994 Mercedes E420

Finding a well cared for Mercedes W124 sedan is like striking gold.  These era of Mercedes were very rugged and durable cars , but demanded a certain degree of maintenance more than your typical Corolla.  If you followed this regimen and understood how these cars were put together, the reward was a car that drove at least as nice as a Rolls Royce and one that would last hundreds of thousands of miles.  The 400E/E420 came with a 275 hp 4.2 M119 V8 that in the USA was saddled with a super tall 2.24 autobahn gearing.  The only bright spot with the tall gearing is that the V8 actually gets better highway mpg than the 6 cyl cars.  A 3.07 or 2.82 rear end swap really wakes these cars up off the line.  Find this 1994 Mercedes E420 for sale in Maynard, MA for $4,500 via craigslist.
