The 6th generation of the Ford Mustang was released for the 2015 model year with a new aggressive body style (it looks so much wider than the previous gen, but it was only 1.5 inches wider and 1.4 inches lower) and an independent rear end for the first time for the original pony car.  Ford also re-introduced a turbo 4-cylinder version known as the EcoBoost...but it is about as Eco as a Porsche Taycan is turbo...but the little 2.3 liter 4-cylinder engine in the Mustang was rated at 310 horsepower and can be tuned up to 400 horsepower (such as the car in this example).  Find this 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost offered for $13,900 in Vail, AZ via craigslist.

This next car comes as a tip from Erik202 who writes: I have a strange desire to own one of these, I don't know exactly what it is, I am generally not drawn to things with the blue oval stuck to them but there was one that ran at the local dragstrip when i was a kid, definitely my first encounter with a Mach 1 of this body style.... mine would have to be a manual trans but this one meets most other requirements (ok maybe not price). This next car was inspired by DT tipper BP who wrote: Aren't these on the $ way up now? Track Puffer: 1985 Merkur XR4ti Terminator Swap

The euro inspired Merkur XR4ti was similar to the SVO Mustang in size and purpose.  Both cars shared the 2.3 turbo 4 cylinder Lima engine which was a capable performer in its day.  However, today's feature track car ditched it's 2.3 engine for a 4.6 supercharged V8 from a 2003 Mustang Terminator which was the Hellcat of it's day at 390hp.  Seeing that going fast and having a competitive car costs real money, buying a proven car that needs a bit of TLC could potentially save the buyer a lot of coin.  Find this 1985 Merkur XR4ti for sale in Newtown, CT for $9,000 via craigslist.

Hertz Rent-A-Racer: 1985 Ford Mustang SVO

Future Classic: 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Everything Shelby has been hot for the past few decades.  Probably longer than that, but you can't touch an actual Shelby anything for less than retirement sized lumps of cash, except those Shelby Dodges, but they've got some years before they become collectible.  Regardless if you want to get a Shelby Mustang that won't break the bank you'll have to find something that isn't new enough to be near MSRP, but not old enough to be "cool."  Find this 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 offered for $19500 via Memphis, TN craigslist.
