Sun Tzu is probably first famous writer to be quoted as saying; In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity -- but this concept is not new or un-repeated by other folks.  It is certainly true in the age of the coronavirus..and while I hate to be a vulture...there is a good reason to buy a car today... primarily is that most people are more concerned with paying their mortgage and avoiding the plague...so it is currently a buyer's market.  Avoid places where the prices are fixed and the reserves are not-met -- instead find yourself a no-reserve auction and see what kind of car you can get for half the going rate from a month ago. It stands to reason that if your 401k is worth 50% of its value in January, then the same goes for a classic Mustang. This next car comes as a tip from Erik202 who writes: I have a strange desire to own one of these, I don't know exactly what it is, I am generally not drawn to things with the blue oval stuck to them but there was one that ran at the local dragstrip when i was a kid, definitely my first encounter with a Mach 1 of this body style.... mine would have to be a manual trans but this one meets most other requirements (ok maybe not price). 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback

The first generation Ford Mustang is generally considered to incorporate the cars built from 1964 through 1973, but prices of the early 1965-1968 models saw a dramatic spike up in the 1990s, with the 1969-1970 following in the late 00s.  Today, you might be tempted to search for a 71-73 big-stang, but there is something about a '69 Fastback that just puts a smile on any face. One of my favorite pastimes is checking out the junk in the background of craigslist listings. Most of the time you can find piles of old metal, sometimes using Kaibeezy's photoshop tips to enhance the images.  The other day, a few tips for some '70 Mustang Fastback Mach 1s came in from BigEgyptian, I immediately became obsessed with the additional cars in the background, which were also for sale.  Let's go through this treasure trove of FordMoCo classics one at a time.  All tips from BigEgyptian, all cars located in Southern Vermont.

Spend any time in any 69 Fastback Mustang and people will routinely ask you if it is a Mach 1.  There is something about the Mach 1 name that stirs the imagination, even if it was simply a cosmetic option (although it did require a minimum of 351W V8, but you could get that in the regular SportsRoof version).  It wasn't like the option package was rare (75k in '69) but sellers today ask a premium for anything with the Mach 1 logo on it and finding a sub $20k example is unusual.  Find this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 "Barn" find currently bidding for $17,700 reserve-not-met with less than an hour to go.

15k: Olympic Special: 1972 Ford Mustang Olympic Sprint Mach 1

The summer of 1972 was well known for the Olympic games held in Munich, Germany from August to September and the games were supposed to show a new image of a happy Germany post WWII. Instead it was the site of a hostage standoff and massacre of 11 Israeli Olympians and a few terrorists.  The product planners at Ford could not have predicted such a calamity and several months prior (March 1972) had released an Olympic Sprint special package for the Mustang, Pinto and Maverick to cash in on the spirit of the games.  Those cars aren't really collectors items today for whatever reason, but the package adds some cool factor to the giant Fastback Mustang.  Find this 1972 Ford Mustang Olympic Sprint Mach 1 for sale in Marble Falls, TX for $15,000 via craigslist.

The 1971-1973 Ford Mustang is technically part of the first generation of Mustang, but it was the 4th cosmetic overhaul and was much more of a beast than the original pony car.  Size was added in every dimension and curb weight was up a 1,000 lbs over the 1964.5 models.  It was like adding a full compliment of NFL linemen to the early cars and the resulting vehicle needed larger engines, bigger brakes, more suspension travel...so the bloat continued like a federal gov't budget.  Hate it, sure, but you can't deny that a green 71-73 Mach 1 has an incredible presence in person...sorta like a cross between Jabba the Hutt and Yoda.
