I'm gonna put my flame suit on and say the following: the V8 and 4-speed is overrated. Every other classic '60s American car that I see running around car shows is powered by a thumping V8 and many have the lauded 4-speed manual. Oooohh...ahhh...pssshaa, meh!  Those hot rod upgraded powertrain combos are great if you plan to go vintage racing or like to head to the drag strip, but most classic cars are just putted around town by old guys, so why not get something that'll get good fuel economy and isn't as common as pimples on a teenager.  Like a straight-6 mated to a..errr..2 or 3...let's just say several speed slushbox. Oil Burner Bird: 1964 Ford Falcon Mercedes Diesel Swap

Depending on your point of view, today's 1964 Falcon could be the answer to a question that no one ever asked or a desirable thrifty commuter car.  The original Falcon 170ci straight six engine and three speed manual were yanked in favor of a Mercedes OM601 4 cyl diesel and a 5 speed overdrive trans.  The 2.0 diesel engine was good for 76 hp and 96 lbs of torque in a 190e so this is a eco-modder type of swap.  Early 60's American iron is not normally where you find an early 80's German diesel engine or going to win any speed contests, but the seller claims the car gets 42 mpg.   Find this 1964 Ford Falcon for sale in Grand Rapids, MI for $2,500 via craigslist.

The Australian breed of muscle car isn't especially rare, with GM, Ford, and Chrysler all building muscle cars somewhat analogous to their American counterparts. What was more rare was the Australian personal luxury car. 'Personal luxury car' isn't a term we use in Australia, instead we prefer to call everything with two doors, regardless of it being a Toyota Corolla or a Rolls-Royce Corniche, a coupe - even if they might be a hardtop. Brocky’s Revenge: 1990 Peter Brock B8 Ford Falcon

Tom Walkinshaw Racing (of Jaguar racing fame) became HSV in Australia in 1988, building factory performance Holdens, often based on Commodores. However, from 1980 to 1987, HDT had fulfilled this role, owned by Holden racing legend, Peter Brock. Brocky’s company was dumped in favour of HSV though, and was forced to mend production problems on imported new Ladas to make ends meet. It was hardly befitting of a racing legend, but Brocky had a stroke of luck: Ford had no answer to HSV, and he’d started driving Sierras in the Australian Touring Car Championship. So, with a new company formed of old HDT staff, he set about modifying Fords instead.
