the first time in the US market, a turbocharged version was available,
but the chassis featured the same fantastic reflexes and sporty seating....but power/torque from the Wankel isn't going to excite anyone in the 21st century...but a turbocharged V8 version with 500 whp might make an impression. Many years ago Carroll Shelby partnered with Hertz Rent-A-Car to provide Shelby Mustangs for the rental market. The cars were returned to Shelby and he sold them to the public for cheap because nobody wanted an ex-rental car. Today, the Hertz GT350H is a high dollar collectible sought after by Shelby fans and command six figure prices from sites like Hemmings.com...but luckily for cheapskates like you and me, there is a cheaper way to get into a Herztang. The Mercury Zephyr (not to be confused with the California Zephyr, British Ford Zephyr or pre-war Lincoln Zephyr) was produced as a sedan, coupe and the uniquely styled Z7 coupe. The roof treatment is ostensibly an homage to the 1950 Ford Crown Victoria, but looks to us like an El Camino with a truncated truck bed cover. It is called a 'wrap around roof' but looks more like a gigantic ill conceived B-pillar...which, I'm happy to report, we can forgive because this thing should do a burnout from San Francisco to New York City. The W116 chassis Mercedes-Benz S-Class was presented to the public in September of 1972 with inline-6 and optional V8 powerplants. It was a huge car in long wheelbase variant and tipped the scales at a healthy 3900 lbs, but is known for a smooth ride and rugged build quality. The 450 SE variant of the W116 is motivated by a 4.5 liter single overhead camshaft (per bank) 90 degree V8 that pushes 214 horsepower and 266 ft-lbs of torque in a 3-speed automatic gearbox. The Type 116 Alfa Romeos broke new ground when introduced with the new transaxle layout. The clutch and transmission were housed at the rear of the car with the differential for better balanced weight distribution. The Italian cancer (rust) has done in many of these cars by 2018. Today's example is very far from a beauty queen, but it has a very note worthy period turbo kit installed. Jafco and Shankle made bolt on turbo kits for the 2.0 Nord engine back in the 1980's, but the one in this car is different than either of those. No amount of internet sleuthing could help me figure out who produced this particular kit. Find this 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT for sale in New Milford, CT for $6,500 via craigslist. 
The second of the Sunday kit car duo was the design handiwork of former Shelby American employee John Chun for Bradley Automotive. The GTII debuted in 1976 was a upmarket move for Bradley as the second gen cars featured true gull wing doors with frames, lower door sills, steel reinforced roof, improved bumpers, and better gauges along with a roomier interior. This particular car must have taken a while to assemble as it is running on a 1977 VW pan and titled as a 1993 model. Find this 1993 Bradley GTII for sale in Islip, NY for $4,000 via craigslist.
It is kit car Sunday here at DT! We have a duo of gull-wing cars for your reading enjoyment. First up is real mongrel of a vehicle that started life as a 1987 Fiero. The chassis was stretched and then fitted with a pretty convincing Diablo VT body kit, proper fitting Compomotive wheels, and a cocaine white paint job. At this point you may be expecting some sort of General Motors drivetrain swap, but this beauty throws us a curve ball with a Honda VTECH V6 and auto trans under the bonnet. The classic pickup 80s American truck isn't often found in excellent condition because they are such good vehicles for hauling/dragging/moving your junk and they are cheap enough that people usually don't keep them in "show condition". The 1933 Plymouth PC/PD was a middle of the road answer from Walter Chrysler because with it his car company offered a 6-cylinder power when Chevy had 4-cylinders and Ford offered 8. The all new 6-cylinder engine featured innovations like insert bearings for the crank, rod, and cam bearings. All of that history might be interesting, but it means nothing to this next car because it has ditched all of the original stuff and is now powered by Chrysler turbo-4 that sits behind the driver's seat. The Italian tuner and small time auto manufacturer Siata (Societa Italiana Auto Trasformazioni Accessori) built a handful of cars using Fiat mechanical parts and retro styling. The early cars were sweet looking mini Ferrari clones such as the S-208 that Steve McQueen owned and drove, but the later Spring (1967-1975) was a wacky looking 2-seater that is still affordable. Sometime back in the middle of the 1980s there was a small company out of Michigan that produced 587 examples of a custom aero-styled recreational vehicle with a turbo-diesel BMW inline-6 engine hanging out back and powering the rear wheels. Styling was done by Bill Collins (known for his work on the Delorean) and the beast was intended to be the "sports car" of RVs, with a low center of gravity, a 100 mph top speed, and a manual gearbox. The Toyota Celica first hit US shores in 1971 as the Japanese translation of the Ponycar. The Celica might not have been powered by fuel thirsty V8s, but the long-hood short-deck styling was perfect for a 7/8th scale Mustang/Camaro/Challenger. This next Celica looks to have survived the years better than most of its factory siblings and is covered in a fabulous shade of lime green. This week's Mid-Week Match-Up is for friend of DT Dan E who tell us that he will be in Europe on an extended vacation/sabbatical for 9 weeks with his small family (wife + kid). In his words: plan is to buy a sweet ride to explore in. I have a friend we are staying with in Switzerland who will buy the car before we arrive and sell it after we leave. Great opportunity to drive something fun I can't or wouldn't get over here. I've always wanted a high HP manual wagon and the 450hp Audi RS4 Avant is at the top of the list. But, I've been scouring the internet and there are some potential concerns with the Audi 4.2L V8. Apparently, the timing chain guides and tensioners can wear out above 75k miles and they are cleverly located on the back of the engine so it has to come out for the $$$ repair. There are also lots of references to need for costly regular cleaning out of carbon deposits in the intake system. Seems like a potentially risky option for reliability and resale value. Anyone know anything about these engines? Another option I'm considering is a BMW 335i or 545i wagon. Lots less HP but could still be fun. I haven't had time to research these yet. What else should we be considering? At our price (<$20k), cars would likely have about 100k miles on them. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
