Super Vegan Option: 1984 Ford Mustang SVO

This next car was inspired by DT tipper BP who wrote: Aren't these on the $ way up now? SVO Mustang and included a link to an 86 SVO that was offered for $13,500 on Hemmings, and these two articles on Hemmings and Hagerty talking about the future collectability and current market of the SVO.  Personally I think that $13,500 is looney toons money for that red SVO, so I'll counter with this 1984 Ford Mustang SVO offered for $5,800 in Orange County, CA via craigslist.

Turbo'd Fourtitude: 1986 Ford Mustang SVO

When the Fox Mustang was released in 1979, Ford enthusiasts were thrilled with the re-emergence of a properly proportioned Mustang with a renewed focus on V8 performance.  Few anticipated that a Special Vehicles Team version would appear in 1984 with a turbocharged 4-banger that was (maybe?) faster, certainly more expensive and potentially cooler than the V8.  All we know is that Ford beat the rest of the world's sporty-ish regular-people cars to the modern paradigm of a fuel injected turbo-4.  Find this 1986 Ford Mustang SVO offered for $4,500 in Santa Fe, NM via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

TBird Turbo Power: 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis Wagon

Whenever someone (usually a new acquaintance, typically in an elevator, or other confined space with little escape like a sauna or an any gender restroom, who was trying to hide in his/her phone) asks me what, exactly, is Daily Turismo?  I pause, and attempt to articulate that it is a blog masquerading as a media company about cars...and specifically a curated collection of cool cars for sale.  But, what I should say is this -- it is a t-bird turbo swapped Mercury wagon from the 80s for a decent price.  Most will go back to their twitter rant, meme like-a-thon, or Pokemon Goat, but a few would get it and perk up.  For those few, I present this 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis Wagon offered for $3000 in Bethlehem, because where else would a chariot fit for a king be located?...oh...not that Bethlehem.  Right.  Bethlehem, PA. Hertz Rent-A-Racer: 1985 Ford Mustang SVO

Many years ago Carroll Shelby partnered with Hertz Rent-A-Car to provide Shelby Mustangs for the rental market.  The cars were returned to Shelby and he sold them to the public for cheap because nobody wanted an ex-rental car.  Today, the Hertz GT350H is a high dollar collectible sought after by Shelby fans and command six figure prices from sites like Hemmings.com...but luckily for cheapskates like you and me, there is a cheaper way to get into a Herztang.  Find this 1985 Ford Mustang SVO here on eBay offered for $24,990 or best offer, located in Rockville, MD. Tip from Zach Z.

SVO Bird: 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe

With a few exceptions, most American cars from the 1980's don't get a ton of love from enthusiasts.  The Thunderbird Turbo Coupe won Motor Trend's car of the year for 1987, but still couldn't one up the Ford Mustang.  The bird's 2.3 turbo had 190hp vs the SVO's 205hp and the 5.0 V8 in the bird sport had 150hp vs 225hp in the Mustang.  The Turbo coupe is often thought of as a American version of the BMW 6 series coupe from the same time period.  Prices on the 6 series have risen substantially in the last couple years so today's super clean bird is a lot of coupe for the dough.  Find this 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe for sale in Trumbull, CT for $5,950 via craigslist.

Finger On The Button: 2000 Jaguar XJR SVO Custom

When I saw this next car described as a Jaguar XJR SVO, I was certain that I'd found the holy grail of hillbilly engineering -- where the timeless style of a Shhhag-u-are meets the performance potential of a boosted 8-valve Pinto engine...but instead all I found was some Jag that was custom ordered with goatskin interior by Henry Ford's granddaughter or some such nonsense.   Find this 2000 Jaguar XJR SVO Custom here on eBay bidding for $13,700 in Bethesda, MD with 2 days to go. Tip from MB.

Pedigree Stallion: 1986 Mustang SVO

Ford has produced a LOT of Mustangs.  Were talkin' like 9M+ units since inception in 1964.  There's nothing rare about a Mustang, you see them everywhere, every day.  Agreed, there are some models that are more desirable than others, but there are a lot of fakes out there as well.  To the average Joe, the visual difference between a basic 1969 Sport Roof and a Boss 302 is...well frankly just the decals.  For something a little more unique and unlikely to be faked, there is the SVO.  Find this 1986 Mustang SVO for sale in Atlanta, GA for $12,750 via craigslist.

Seller Submission: 1986 Ford Mustang SVO

Ford introduced the SVO version of their Fox body Mustang as sporty alternative to the average pony car, and it did have Koni adjustable shocks, sporty seats, a lightweight turbocharged engine, and 5-speed gearbox...but, it still used the conventional stick-beam live axle out back...but not this one.  Find this 1986 Ford Mustang SVO with Cobra IRS offered for $6,500 in Hood River, OR via craigslist.  Seller submission from KC.

Historical Revisionism: 1984 Ford Mustang SVO

Ford released the SVO version of their Fox body Mustang right around the time that George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984 (actually published in 1949) was supposed to be set.  Instead of the land where Big Brother oppresses individualism, the US auto industry was branching into the array of sub-groups to satisfy the need of the individual car buyer.  For all the complaints of the 1970s being the malaise era, the 1980s was a magnificent boom in choice and capabilities of the horseless carriage.  Find this 1984 Ford Mustang SVO offered for $4,000 in Manchester, CT via craigslist.

5k: Fun or Fast? 1986 Ford Mustang SVO

Legendary gunslinger, gambler, boxing referee, and mustache enthusiast Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (1848-1929) is quoted as saying "fast is fine, but accuracy is everything--oooff, dagumbit, yah shot my liver!"  Earp never owned a Fox-body generation of Ford's Mustang, but he was certainly talking about Ford's Mustang SVO right before his liver was perforated with buckshot.  Find this 1986 Ford Mustang SVO here on eBay offered for $8,600 buy-it-now located in Puyallup, WA.  Tip from Sean T.

5k: Turbocharged Classic: 1986 Ford Mustang SVO

While strolling the carpeted floors of the Los Angeles Auto Show this week (Press days were Nov 18-20, open to the public Nov 21-28) I happened upon the Ford booth and get to take a look at the new 2015 Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost.  The new 310 horsepower 2.3 liter inline-4 puts turbocharged power back into the Mustang for the first time since 1986, but spending 25 to 30 large on a new car seems imprudent when you consider that it'll be worth half that in 3-5 years.  For that much coin you could pick up a classic fastback and still have money left over for a 1986 Ford Mustang SVO like this one here on eBay, currently bidding for $5,100 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go, located in Lititz, PA.

13k: A Cobra By Any Other Name: 1977 MG MGB, SVO swap

With as many engine-swapped MGs filling up bandwidth on the pages of Daily Turismo, you would think there's an agenda against Morris powerplants. Someone out there may indeed be sticking pins into a miniaturized, crocheted 1.8L B-series engine. After all, the world is a big place. Around here, there's simply no love for smog-compliant wheezers from any original equipment manufacturer. However, once you tuck a 200-horsepower engine (ironically, built using fuel-saving technology) between the shock towers, the MGB's responsive chassis finally has enough juice to work with, and it's a beautiful thing. Find this 1977 MG MGB with SVO 2.3L turbo swap in Raleigh, NC for $12,500.

15k: Silver Fox: 1984 Ford Mustang SVO, 32k miles

When the Fox Mustang was released in 1979 Ford enthusiasts were thrilled with the re-emergence of a properly proportioned Mustang with a renewed focus on V8 performance.  Few expected that a Special Vehicles Team version would appear in 1984 with a turbocharged 4-banger that was faster, more expensive and cooler than the V8.  This 1984 Ford Mustang SVO is for sale in Houston, TX for $13,800 via craigslist.

5k: Seller Very hOnest: 1985.5 Ford Mustang SVO

With all of the car sellers tossing around phrases like "it could be actual miles," "looks like one owner" and "rusty paint should shine up real nice" - it is refreshingly unique to see a seller say "this is NOT the one you want to restore... just drive it, beat on it and enjoy it."  Find this honest 1985.5 Ford Mustang SVO for sale in Central Square, NY for $3,995 via autotrader.com.
