ASC McLaren Convertible: 1986 Mercury Capri

This next car is about as odd of a combination as you'll find around -- first it is the Mercury Capri from the time when they shared a chassis and powertrain with the Fox-body Mustang, and it is equipped with a manual gearbox, but the kicker is that it is one of the few Capri's put through the ASC McLaren convertible conversion. Find this 1986 Mercury Capri offered for $8000 in Quinton, VA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Body in White: 1986 Ford LTD

This next car comes from tipper Jon who writes: Here is a clean 1986 Ford LTD looking very ex-police car in white with bordello-red interior. At the $4k-ish asking price, it looks like some throwback fun for the folks who remember that this sedan was built on the Fox platform. The only potential downer might be the engine under the hood - these things came with either a wheezing 4 banger, a straight 6, a bigger v6 or the 5 liter Windsor v8. I know which one I would hope for. Find this 1986 Ford LTD offered for $3950 in Houston, TX via craigslist.

They See Me Rollin: 1981 Ford Fairmont Futura 351W

A stock 80s Ford Fairmont 2-door won't get your blood pumping even in the sweet fastback-ish Futura trim (similar to a Mercury Zephyr Z-7...if that helps).  Even the healthiest 5-liter V8 version only pushed 139 horsepower at a leisurely 3600 rpm...but that's nothing that a crate motor swap won't fix.  Find this 1981 Ford Fairmont Futura 351W offered for $8,500 in Detroit, MI via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Joe Dirt: 1985 Ford LTD LS1

In 1983-1986, the Ford LTD nameplate made its last hurrah on the fox body platform as a sedan and wagon.   The sedan weighed in at a relatively svelte curb weight of 3000 lbs.  Ford made a performance LX version of the car that came fitted with an uprated suspension and 5.0 V8.  Today's car takes the LX model idea ten times further.  A LS1 GM V8 from a F-body Camaro is now powering the car along with a built 4L60e auto trans.  The rest of the build has some custom touches and looks to be very well thought out.  Aside from the super dark tints, everything is done very discreetly.  Find this 1985 Ford LTD for sale in Macon, GA for $7,500 via craigslist.

LSX Powaaaaaaaah: 1978 Mercury Zephyr Z7

The Mercury Zephyr (not to be confused with the California Zephyr, British Ford Zephyr or pre-war Lincoln Zephyr) was produced as a sedan, coupe and the uniquely styled Z7 coupe.  The roof treatment is ostensibly an homage to the 1950 Ford Crown Victoria, but looks to us like an El Camino with a truncated truck bed cover.  It is called a 'wrap around roof' but looks more like a gigantic ill conceived B-pillar...which, I'm happy to report, we can forgive because this thing should do a burnout from San Francisco to New York City.  Find this 1978 Mercury Zephyr Z7 offered for $7500 in Farmville, VA via craigslist. Tip from Pushrod.

Foxy Lady: 1983 Ford Mustang 5.0 Convertible

The 3rd generation Fox-body Mustang needs little or no introduction to most American muscle fanatics living human beings, but perhaps a refresher is in order.  Ford replaced the funky shaped Mustang II in 1979 with the Fox-body, and returned Mustang proportions to its previous long-hood/short rear end setup.  The early Foxes had quad headlights, with a grill and front end that I think is slightly cooler than the later '87+ look.  Find this 1983 Ford Mustang 5.0 Convertible offered for $9000 in Austin, TX via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Boss Mojäng Stang: 1982 Ford Mustang GL 5.0

Ford sure got a lot of mileage out of the Fox platform, pumping out the same basic car under dozens of different nameplates, shapes, and trim levels starting in 1979. They managed to keep this pony alive and kicking for more than two decades, if you count the SN95 evolution form 1993-2004. But the earliest "four eyed" Mustangs are starting to gain some fans lately, and are worth a look due to their affordability and retro '80s style. So if you prefer your Fox Body Mustangs from the D/MH era (Dorothy and/or Mark Hamill) instead of one of the later PVI cars (Post-Vanilla Ice), then check this one out.  Find this 1982 Ford Mustang GL for sale in Ojai, CA for $8,000 via craigslist.

Crazy Like A Fox: 1989 Ford Mustang Convertible Twin Turbo LS Swap

If you are a Ford purist, you may want to skip this article.  The ubiquitous Chevy LS engine has a way to finding its way into just about any car brand/model with four wheels.  Seeing that DT readers take to engine swaps like bees do to honey we have today's featured pony car with a low mileage 5.3 LS engine out of a Chevy Suburban swapped into it.  The owner took a page out of Emeril Lagasse's book and kicked things up a notch by installing twin turbos on the engine.  Find this 1989 Ford Mustang convertible for sale in Niskayuna, NY for $8,500 via craigslist.

Foxy Roadkill: 1992 Ford Mustang LX

Welcome to Roadkill, a long lost DT feature where we post cars for sale seen on the side of the road by readers and staff.  I'm not sure why you would go Old Skool when you are selling a car, maybe you are tired of the infamous Craigslist Flake.  Anyway, here's some fresh Roadkill I saw on the way into work this morning. Find this 1992 Ford Mustang LX for sale on NE 190th Street and 103rd Ave. NE in Bothell, WA for $2,100 via For Sale sign in window.

Das Pony: 1984 Mercury Capri RS

The Mercury Capri followed the career arc of any modern pop diva singing prodigy -- think Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, or Miley Cyrus.  A cute and compact version (1970-1977 German Ford) for the first few years gives way to a meatier and more aggressive second generation (1979-1986 Fox Body) followed by a complete and total disaster (1991-1994 Mazda front-drive convertible). Stick to the middle years before the breakdown to shaved head insanity...like this 1984 Mercury Capri RS  here on eBay bidding for $4,995 reserve-not-met with $7,395 buy-it-now located in Torrance, CA.

What Does The Fox Say? 1985 Ford Mustang LX 5.0

I might be getting old, but the Fox body 5.0 Mustang is starting too look like a collectible to my eyes -- probably because the early examples are pushing 40 years old and my vision is getting fuzzy.  It REALLY doesn't seem that long ago that a '93 Cobra was a new ride...but I digress.  Find this 1985 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 offered for $11,500 near Chicago, IL via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!

Wrong Team: 1990 Ford Mustang SBC/Powerglide/9"rear swap

A wise man (Confucius) once told our seller, "all you need is a small block Chevy, Powerglide trans, and a 9" rear end." The 1979-1993 Fox body Mustang was most well known for the 5.0 302 V8 EFI engine.  However, today's Mustang bucks the ever popular LS engine swap for a decidedly old school 400ci small block Chevy.  Find this 1990 Ford Mustang for sale in Greenwich, CT for $15,000 via craigslist.

Pedigree Stallion: 1986 Mustang SVO

Ford has produced a LOT of Mustangs.  Were talkin' like 9M+ units since inception in 1964.  There's nothing rare about a Mustang, you see them everywhere, every day.  Agreed, there are some models that are more desirable than others, but there are a lot of fakes out there as well.  To the average Joe, the visual difference between a basic 1969 Sport Roof and a Boss 302 is...well frankly just the decals.  For something a little more unique and unlikely to be faked, there is the SVO.  Find this 1986 Mustang SVO for sale in Atlanta, GA for $12,750 via craigslist.

Canned Fox: 1986 Ford Mustang GT

The Fox-body Mustang was such an improvement over the bizarrely good selling Mustang II that it can only be a matter of time before the Fox becomes collectable, but I just don't think we have reached that time yet...or have we?  They say that cars don't become collectible until we forget how truly horrible they were when new, and frankly I've all but expunged any memory of my time in a non-turbo 4-banger Fox, and this next car is what I think will be valuable when prices go nuts.  Find this 1986 Ford Mustang GT here on eBay with $11,900 buy-it-now or make-offer located in Taylors, SC with 4 days to go.

Fox In Sheep's Clothing: 1981 Ford Fairmont Wagon

The Ford Fairmont (and its badge engineered cousin, the Mercury Zephyr) was a Fox-body based large compact (or small mid-sized) sedan that superseded the Maverick in 1978 and survived until it was replaced with the terminally terrible Tempo in 1984.  The Fairmont isn't something you'd expect rich guys to buy under the air conditioned tents at a Barrett-Jackson auction, but this next one will be able to embarrass the stock C4 Corvette they just bought for too much money.  Find this 1981 Ford Fairmont Wagon here on eBay offered for $6,500 buy-it-now located in Odenville, AL.

Reader Ride: Foxy Lady In White

Time for another edition of DT's Reader Ride feature, which keeps coming back and won't go away, like a fishhook boomerang.  This next feature comes from reader Zach H. who found this Fox Body Mustang after narrowing his potential rides list down to a Miata, E30 or Fox Mustang.  I think he made the right choice with this bodacious Fox body.
