LS1 V8 Swapped: 2000 BMW 323ci

BMW's E46 generation 3 series was sold from 1999 to 2005 and it was known for its well balanced chassis and smooth inline-6 engines.  If you want a fast one, you can get the M3 version for less than the price of this next example...but it won't have a 400+ horsepower V8 that'll drink 87 octane fuel and leave twin black stripes everywhere you go.  Find this 2000 BMW 323ci V8 offered for $16,900 in Long Island, NY via craigslist. Tip from Jeff.

LS1 Swapped: 1995 Nissan 240SX S14 Silvia

The S14 generation Nissan Silvia was badged in North America as the Nissan 240SX and is a favorite among drifters.  Drifter? Not the sketchy train surfing murderer kinda drifter, but the drives with gobs full over oversteer style drifter.  The US version was powered by a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder that only produced 155 horsepower...which is fine for drifting if you are Keiichi Tsuchiya, but normal people will need more zoom zoom to get sideways...so you'll want a Silvia with an LS1 V8 like this 1995 Nissan 240SX S14 Silvia offered for $12,500 in Gray, GA via craigslist. Tip from Jeff.

Joe Dirt: 1985 Ford LTD LS1

In 1983-1986, the Ford LTD nameplate made its last hurrah on the fox body platform as a sedan and wagon.   The sedan weighed in at a relatively svelte curb weight of 3000 lbs.  Ford made a performance LX version of the car that came fitted with an uprated suspension and 5.0 V8.  Today's car takes the LX model idea ten times further.  A LS1 GM V8 from a F-body Camaro is now powering the car along with a built 4L60e auto trans.  The rest of the build has some custom touches and looks to be very well thought out.  Aside from the super dark tints, everything is done very discreetly.  Find this 1985 Ford LTD for sale in Macon, GA for $7,500 via craigslist.

El Ehs Juan: 1987 BMW 528e

The E28 generation BMW 528e with the 2.7 liter ETA engine is a great car if you don't mind being passed by most modern cars...but you've got that smug look on your face because you know there is more to life than driving fast.  Except today, you know something that new BMW driver doesn't know...this car isn't left handed.  Find this 1987 BMW 528e with LS1 V8 offered for $20,500 in Reseda, CA via craigslist. Tip from Sean.

No Puffer: 1997 Volvo V90 LS1 swap

What is it exactly that makes a slab sided Volvo wagon with an American V8 so cool? Try to explain to a non-car enthusiast what exactly is so special about a Volvo wagon and you will get a puzzled look or get your sanity questioned. The now famous Paul Newman and David Letterman stories have undoubtedly added to the appeal of this engine swap. Find this very well executed 1997 Volvo V90 with a LS1/T56 swap for sale in Farmington Hills, MI for $11,400. Sellers take note, this is how to write a proper car advertisement.

Vortec V8 Swap: 1979 Jeep Wagoneer

The SJ generation Jeep Wagoneer was produced from 1962 through 1991 and holds the unique title of being the world's first luxury 4X4 sport utility vehicle.  Back before the Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen littered prep school drop-off zones, this was the vehicle that wealthy country club cowboys bought for their first wives, and tried to get their second wives to use -- but being twenty years younger, wife 2.0 would normally demand something sportier like a Mercedes SL. Perhaps with a bit of persuading she would drive a Vortec V8 powered Wagoneer?  Find this 1979 Jeep Wagoneer with GM 5.3 Vortec V8 swap here on eBay bidding for $10,001 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go, located in French Settlement, LA.

LS1 V8 Power: 1993 Porsche 968

The Porsche 968 was the final chapter of the long line of front engine Porsche sports car that started in 1976 with the 924. The 968 didn't have a grunty V8 like the 928 or boosted potential like the 944 Turbo, but it has one of the better shapes from the front-engine Porsche era and the pop-up headlights are just icing on the cake.  Find this 1993 Porsche 968 with LS1 V8 offered for a trade for a Shelby Cobra, Triple weber 240Z, Pantera, or best offer, located in Miami, FL via craigslist.

XKamaro: 2003 Jaguar XK8 Convertible LS1

Another day, another Jaguar with Chevy V8 conversion -- I'd better watch it, else endure the wrath of the Jaguar faithful...oh, wait...it's a late model XK8, nobody will care -- keep calm and carry on swapping!  Find this 2003 Jaguar XK8 Convertible with LS1 power offered for $12,500 in Weatherford, TX via craigslist.

Black Pearl: 1988 Porsche 944 LS1

The Porsche 944 is a fantastic car on paper -- and it ruled the 80s as a mid-market sports car with an engine up front and a transaxle out back for excellent weight distribution and handling.  However, with only 4-banger power available, it was always a bit poky -- and is slow compared to today's family sedans even when equipped with a turbocharger.  It might be cliche to say this, but what the 944 was really missing from the factory was an LS1, and thankfully someone has fixed it for us.  Find this 1988 Porsche 944 LS1 here on eBay bidding for $6,300 reserve-not-met with a $15,000 buy-it-now located in Siloam Springs, AK Arkansas with a few hours to go.

Seller Submission: 1997 Jaguar XK8 LS1 Swap

The X100 generation Jaguar XK8 was released in 1996 on a platform shared with the Aston Martin DB7.  It was a much more modern looking car than the XJS is replaced and looks dead gorgeous in drop top spec if you ask me. What could make it better?  An engine that is more powerful, more reliable, and cheaper to maintain mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox?  Find this 1997 Jaguar XK8 LS1 T56 here on eBay offered for $14,000 buy-it-now or make-offer located in Akron, OH. Seller submission from Zhong.

Independence from Boring: 2000 Jaguar XJ8, LS1 swap

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that not all V8 cars are created equal, that some are endowed by Bob Lutz with certain unalienable rights, that among these are overhead valves, high volumetric efficiency, and the pursuit of smoky burnouts. Find this LS1-swapped 2000 Jaguar XJ8 for sale in Owings, MD for $2,500 via craigslist.

5k: LS1 V8 Powered: 1985 Porsche 944

I love optimistic sellers.  You know, people who say stuff like "With some TLC and a fresh coat of paint this car could go from amazing to super amazing!"  But you know what I like even more?  Cheap LS1 swapped cars that have suspensions and chassis designed for handling.  Combine that optimistic seller with a V8 swap and the seller's listing goes from amazing to super amazing.  Find this 1985 Porsche 944 with Chevy V8 power offered for $7,550 in Boston, MA via craigslist.  Tip from Eric.

10k: Three Strikes Offender: 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap

The Volvo 740 is an unlikely vehicle to lay thick black stripes through multiple gears on dry pavement, but here indeed we have it....again.  If you are a regular on this site, you might remember when it first appeared in late 2012 from its builder Yoshifab, and then when it popped back up on ebay in March and then April 2013 from a seller in Ohio.  Surprise, surprise, this 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap is back on eBay, currently bidding for $9,500 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go, still located in Euclid, OH.

15k: LS1 Powered: 1981 Porsche 911 SC

If you drink all the kool-aid about driving a vintage Porsche 911, you might expect the cars to be fast and bulletproof but the truth is that the stock 911 powerplants leave much to be desired.  Power in the low 200 hp range isn't much to write home about these days (expect V6 Camrys to eat you for lunch).  The Porsche flat-6 is known for its long life, but only if you maintain it properly, and changing out things like the cam tensioner can cost considerably more than your last Camaro tune-up.  So, if you want some more performance and save a few bucks on oil changes, why not swap a Chevy V8 into the back of your Porsche?  Find this 1981 Porsche 911 SC V8 currently bidding for $11,655 reserve-not-met with buy-it-now $19,500 via eBay with 4 days to go, located in Port Clinton, OH.

15k: RXV8: 2004 Mazda RX-8, LS1

The RX-8 was Mazda's replacement for the out of production RX-7, introduced as a last chance attempt at saving the rotary engine.  The RX-8 was built starting in 2003 and ending in 2011 when the lights went out on production of Felix Wankel's spinning machine...for now.  Anyway, the RX-8 rapidly gained the a similar reputation to the RX-7 -- specifically that it was a great car to drive, but the engine blew up faster than a George Clooney relationship...or about 4 years.  What do you do when your factory Mazda engine starts seeing other people?  Swap in a fuel injected Chevrolet V8.  Find this 2004 Mazda RX-8 with LS1 swap currently bidding for $12,000 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go.
