Not On The Rug Man- 1993 Porsche 968

About two months ago, I was chatting with a friend who works in the same industry as myself at a regional trade show.  His house was under contract for sale and in addition to moving the contents of the house, he only had two weeks to get rid of his Porsche 968 before the closing date.  He had owned the 968 since 1996, but it had sat under a car cover for an undetermined amount of years by the side of the house.  After a couple phone calls to some enabler friends of mine, one offered me up the use his 2wd Chevy truck and car trailer and another (who is a ASE certified tech) volunteered to make the three hour one way trip with me from CT to Wilmington, DE to pick up the car.  The 968 was the final evolution of the 944 and were sold in very limited numbers.  The auto press loved neutral handling, overall balance, and it's giant 3.0 four cylinder engine.  The frog eye pop up headlights are decidedly retro cool in 2018.  This particular car is in rough shape and would be much better served by someone intimately familiar with these water cooled Porsche models.  The values on these have recently been on the rise so it is possible someone with some ambition may want a project or a PCA club racer.  Find this 1993 Porsche 968 for sale in Norwalk, CT for $5,000 via eBay.

Keeping It In The Family Swap: 1983 Porsche 944 (968 engine)

At the moment, early 944's are probably the biggest bargain of the Porsche brand.  You have a sweet looking car with a only a 143 hp 2.5 4 cylinder engine to haul around about 2600 lbs and are stuck with the less attractive pre-85.5 dash layout.  It is fairly common to find Chevy LS swapped 944's, but today's example kept things in the P-car family with a 1993 968 engine swapped instead.  The 968 was the final iteration of the 944 model and came with a 236 hp Variocam (German V-tech) 3.0 4 cylinder engine.  Find this 1983 Porsche 944 for sale in Stoughton, MA for $6,500 via craigslist.

What Are Cold? 1994 Porsche 968

The Porsche 968 was the ultimate version of Porsche's infatuation with watercooled transaxle equipped front-engine cars starting with the 924 and 928 back in the 1970s.  Values are on the uptick as the market for sub $20k Porsches has been entirely vacated by the aircooled 911 which values each headlight at around $20k, so buy one now before they also go nuts. Porsche's largely forgotten final iteration of the Volkswagen-derived 924/944 platform, the 968, has caught our attention here on DT about 10 times so far. Why? Because it was the final version of an undervalued bloodline, the most refined iteration of a long lasting model, and the last front-engined Porsche before the Cayenne started dominstrating all over the lowly sports cars (in sales volume, anyhow). The 968 is quirky, reasonably good looking - and, most importantly - it's still a relative bargain amongst P-heads. Find this 1993 Porsche 968 in Boise, Idaho for $16,000 on craigslist. LS1 V8 Power: 1993 Porsche 968

The Porsche 968 was the final chapter of the long line of front engine Porsche sports car that started in 1976 with the 924. Where's My Torque? 1992 Porsche 968 Convertible, 13B Rotary Swap

The Porsche 968 was the swan song for Porsche's attempt at replacing the 911 with a font engined 2+2, and arguably the best looking of the 924/944/928/968 group.  The elegant design is attributed to Dutch born Harm Lagaay who also designed the BMW Z1, Ford Scorpion/Sierra, Porsche 924, Boxster, Cayenne, 996, & Carrera GT (but he was not, as it might seem, the inspiration for Ferrari's latest hypercar name.) However, for some strange reason, the folks at Porsche decided it needed a huge inline-4 mated to a transaxle, when what it needed was some pizzazz under the hood, something like a straight-8, or a turbocharged 2-stroke...or perhaps even a rotary engine would have given the 968 the wow factor it lacked.  Find this 1992 Porsche 968 convertible with 13B rotary swap here on eBay currently bidding for $1,825 reserve-not-met with $7,500 buy-it-now, located in Edmonds, WA.

The Porsche 968 was the final evolution of the watercooled front-engine Prickmobile that started with the Porsche 924 back in 1976.  It didn't have the sonorous V8 of the 928, but it had cleaner styling and swooping headlight design inspired by the Porsche 959 supercar, except they popped up and 9 out of 10 DTer's agree that pop-up lights are awesome.  Find this 1993 Porsche 968 Coupe here on eBay bidding for $15,100 with 4 days to go, located in Portland, OR.

Porsche's 914, 928, 924, and 944 coincidentally followed a tidy naming convention wherein the last digit corresponded with its cylinder count. Stuttgart then introduced the 968 as if to say We're Porsche and our models don't need numerical significance. We're above significance. The 968 got marks for good handling behavior but was nonetheless expelled from Porsche Academy with its delinquent classmate, the 928. Today, it's a cheap entry into the marque with better civility and more power* than its 924/944 forefathers. Find this 1994 Porsche 968 Coupe in Portland, OR for $8,900 via craigslist or AutoTrader.
