The first modern manual transmission was demonstrated by two Frenchmen (Louis-Rena Panhard et Emile Levassor) way back in 1894. Many significant improvements to Panhard and Levassor's sliding mesh "crash-box" have been engineered over the last century, but none as significant as electronics which have made the manual gearbox obsolete and replaced them in souless dual-clutch things that have rubber bands, sensors, and brains that tell the pile of parts when and how to shift. Manual gearboxes might be all but gone from new car dealer lots today, but take a walk on the wild side over to the used lots and you can still double clutch and row your own. The Volvo Amazon (called the 120 series outside of Sweden) was the more practical, more upright older sibling of the P1800 "sports" car, to which it donated its engine, transmission, and suspension option list (mostly). Today the values of the 1800 series coupes and 1800ES shooting brakes have started to tick up, leaving the Amazon behind slightly. But now we're starting to see some action on the nicely preserved examples of the pre-brick Volvo sedans & wagons, for good reason - they are solidly built, fun to drive, look great and should live forever. The Skyline name was first used by the Prince Motor Company in 1957 on their Dagmar bumper equipped luxury sedan. A few years later, Prince merged with Nissan and the Skyline name became associated with Nissan's fast sports sedans, culminating with the GT-R release in 1969. Many years later the GT-R Skyline (or Skyline GT-R?) name has become synonymous with Japanese speed and style, but there are many Skyline sedans that aren't turbocharged or all-wheel-drive...but are still cool nonetheless. I like racing, and tried to watch a Formula 1 race the other day, but fell asleep once the first turn was sorted out. There is something called NASCAR that some folks enjoy, but my own personal preference is for vintage racing, which is really great because you can buy the cars and race them yourself. The Jaguar XJS was a luxury grand tourer that survived with only a few changes over an impressive 21 year lifespan. Production of the Malcolm Sayer and Doug Thorpe designed 2+2 started in 1975, had a minor makeover in 1982, and a more significant re-design in 1992 and the last cars left the factory in 1996. Today's example is a really nice preserved example in British Racing Green with a saddle tan interior and a very reasonable asking price. Berkeley Cars Ltd out of Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, England had a short run of low-priced sporty microcars starting back in 1956 and ultimately ending in bankruptcy in 1960. Unfortunately, the company was just starting to get their formula of front-wheel-drive motorcycle powered fiberglass things with cars like the Sports SE492 when their main business (building Glass-reinforced plastic "caravans") when belly up. Luckily, you can get a basket case Berkeley for cheap and re-live the assembly and build process with this 1959 Berkeley Sports SE 492 here on eBay bidding for $2105 with 2 days to go, located in Hollywood, FL.
Merriam-Webster defines the word con·tour (n)| \ˈkän-ËŒtu̇r as (1) an outline especially of a curving or irregular figure (2) the general form or structure of something or (3) a usually meaningful change in intonation in speech. I wasn't familiar with that last definition, but the fellows at Ford's Special Vehicle Team put some contour into the 1995-2000 Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique sales literature with the release of the 1998 SVT version which added a 2.5 liter Duratec V6, 5-speed manual box, upgraded brakes, snazzy interior bits, and a sport tuned suspension. The Toyota Celica first hit US shores in 1971 as the Japanese translation of the Ponycar. In 1976 Toyota introduced a Fastback version which borrowed styling cues from the late 60s Ford Mustang. While the first series Celicas certainly borrowed heavily from US styling cues, some might argue that the second generation Celica's (which were penned in the US and carried the model from 1978-1981) began striking their own pose, before the 1982's headed off in a much more unique and angular look. I love a good American hamburger...in fact, I had a juicy medium-rare 6 oz sirloin burger topped with bacon, cheddar cheese and avocado for lunch today...it was meaty and quite filling.
