BMWish: 1962 Glas S1004 Coupe

Hans Glas GmbH was originally founded in 1883 as an agricultural repair shop, but sometime in the 1950s, Glas started building its own small sports coupes in the town of Dingolfing in Bavaria.  BMW absorbed the Glas product line and factory in 1962 and what was left of Glas started building the BMW 1500 version of the New Class sedan.  A few years later, (1966) Glas was outright purchased by BMW to gain access to its patents and large manufacturing facility and today the Dingolfing factory builds BMW 5, 6 and 7 series automobiles.  Today's next feature is a small Glas coupe that is located somewhere south of the border, so make sure you have your importation experts ready. Fast Coupe: 2008 BMW M3 E92

The 4th generation of the BMW M3 was released in 2007 and it featured a big departure from previous models. Gone was the screaming inline-6 engine and in its place was a throaty V8...which was a heresy according to BMW fanboys but it sold quite well and the 414 horsepower and 295 ft-lbs of torque was welcome to anyone except the serious inline-6 nut.  Today the magic of depreciation means the $60k+ M3 is now 1/4 of that original price...time to buy. Spätburgunder: 1972 BMW Bavaria

The Bavaria was the name for the bigger engine version of what BMW internally called the New Six (E3 sedan, E9 coupe) for the US market.  It was subsequently replaced by the E23 7-series, but for a few years (from 1968-1977) it offered a large executive sedan setup with a focus on fun for the driver.  Most have succumbed to rust and over priced repair shops -- but a few survive and this next example looks shockingly well preserved.  Find this 1972 BMW Bavaria offered for $17,500 in Burlingame, CA via craigslist. Bubble Wrapped 255kms: 1997 BMW 740i E38

To quote one of my favorite podcaster/medical experts (Peter Attia); I'm giving up drinking for a month.  Whoops, bad punctuation; I'm giving up. Drinking for a month.  Anyway, the COVID-19 thing has gotten me a little stir crazy because I'm cooped up inside with a wife and three kids, but that doesn't mean I can't dream about buying a 255km E38 BMW. I know, you could get a BRAND NEW 740i with self driving whatchamalits and full automatic self leveling cupholders for that price.  But...you'd just be another middle aged suit driving something that everyone else has.  The brand new E38...yeah...I'd start driving it every day, like it was a new car. But I mentioned this to Kaibeezy and he said -- 55K euros is a bucket of clams for a car you'd be a bratwurst to drive. Shark Soup: 1987 BMW L7 E23

The E28 generation BMW 7-series was released in 1977 as the first BMW to wear the 7 designation and as a replacement for the aging E3 New Six platform (aka the Bavaria).  The changes were more evolutionary than revolutionary, but the Paul Bracq designed shark nose shape is certainly more modern looking than the New Six, in part because it has a higher beltline, and smaller greenhouse. Today's E28 is described by the seller as an L7 (which added some fancy leather upholstery, a power sunroof, and top of the line options...but the seller also says it is a manual, which was not available with the L7 package.  No pictures means you'll have to brave the coronavirus to find out. Leap Day: 1988 BMW 535i E28

Welcome to Leap Day on DT, where we look at cars ready to take the Leap from depreciated crap to appreciating classic:  I've got to admit that I have a soft spot for the E28 generation BMW 5-series...particularly the zippy 535i with a manual gearbox.  I've personally driven 2 of them to their unfortunate death in the 24 Hours of LeMons (sorry about that...had to be done) but I'm (somewhat) happy to see prices rise (probably because people have bashed them into Cadillac Hearses on racetracks...again, sorry about that) and see the E28 get the respect is deserves.  Regardless...this guy is asking a lot for an old BMW. Clown Shooting Brake: 2000 BMW M Coupe

Due to various economic factors that I can't even start to go into right now (actually...I wonder what the price of late model collectible cars will do with the DOW bombing and Coronapolocypse upon us...ooooo...oooo...that Coronapocalypse is something I just made up and I call dibs on it. TM. Trademark. Patent Pending. Living In An Analog World: 2007 BMW 328i Wagon E91

A new BMW 3-series offers a boat load of technology, safety, performance, and gadgets for aspiring executive (or trust fund high schooler). You get the latest direct injection 4-cylinder engine that is boosted with a small turbocharger (or two?...I really don't know or care to find out) and all manner of lane departure warning systems and self leveling wheel caps...but what you can't get is a wagon or a manual gearbox in a 3-series.  BMW...I don't know you anymore.  Meh..you haven't cared about my opinion since I swore off buying new cars decades ago and have lived an autotrader/craigslist/offerup dream life...but I'm gonna miss the 3-series in about 10 years when the depreciated ones are all fitted with some kinda 8 speed slushbox flappy paddle gearbox and powered by a beryllium warp core and the steering wheel has been replaced with a joystick.  I think I now know why I've preferred the company of geezers since I was a young lad.  New digital tech is weaksauce and experience cannot be googled or found on twitter. Rare 6-Speed: 2013 BMW 328i F30

The sixth generation BMW 3-series (F30 sedan, F31 wagon, F36 Gran Turismo sportback hideous monster) was released for the 2011 model year with an inexplicably named 4-series F32 two-door coupe.  Compared to the outgoing E90/91/92 3-series the new F30/31/32/33/34/35/36 was faster, more comfortable, longer, and wider...but you've got to wonder if the additional electronic gizmos and fancified stuff makes it less fun to drive? Have Shifter, Will Travel: 1995 BMW 540i

In the early 1990s BMW was known for its silky smooth inline-6 engines, and it hadn't produced a V8 in 25 years (the last BMW V8 was a 3.2 liter model first used in the 501/502 and finally in the 3200 CS model in 1965).  However, the folks in Dingolfing were never known for sitting on their behinds, so in 1992 BMW released the M60 V8 in their world beating 5-series sedan and it was a fantastic dual overhead cam beast. German Frankincense: 2001 BMW 525iT

The Christian feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th, (the word Epiphany comes from the ancient Greek work Τheophaneia meaning "vision of God") and is a commemoration of the three Magi visiting the infant Jesus.  Around here we celebrate the Epiphany by posting 3 cars, one for each of the magi, next up is Balthasar who delivered a gift of Frankincense, which is a kind of resin that is burned and represents divinity. I couldn't find a car that burned copious amounts of oil or coolant, so instead I've got a BMW wagon equipped with angel eyes or halos...which is as holy as I could find for a BMW.
