The Mercedes-Benz L-series is a conventionally setup truck (engine in front), but with an engine that is pushed into the cab and is called a Kurzhuaber (Short Bonnet) in Germany. 1995-2002. Mercedes offered some versions with 6-cylinder engines where the E stands for executive, but in 1998 the E for eggads my spleen just ruptured AMG version was released. It was a $70k trebuchet in a schoolyard spitball fight and sent lesser German sedans home with their tailpipes between their legs. The Volkswagen Passat first debuted as the Dasher, then the enigmatically sophisticated Quantum, and finally the Passat in 1990. A well-bronzered Dasher may never be collectible. However, a stick-shift diesel-drinking Quantum wagon certainly would, except that America never got that version (par for the course, America). Some brilliant specimen of a human being scratched that forbidden itch by importing the car you see here in 2010. One of the tricks when buying a used car is that you should always pick the example with the most options from the OEM. Those options can add up to tens of thousands of dollars on a modern luxury car, but you'll often get them for free when you pickup a used example because everybody looks at KBB and the options don't make much difference. What about on an older classic? The same principle applies, except that sometimes a low optioned car has a certain appeal...but how low can you go before it just becomes ridiculous? The 4-door coupe is a crowded segment on the road these days, I can't drive more than a few miles in sunny SoCal without seeing a new Audi A7, Mercedes CLS, BMW 6-series, or a Porsche Panamera driven by some lady with freshly bleached hair.
