Convincing Conversion: 2000 BMW M5 Touring

The E39 generation of BMW's M5 brought V8 power and much needed injection of torque to the big 5-series bruiser in 1998.  The M5 was available as a sedan, but BMW never released a properly awesome wagon version, so you had a settle for a 540i if you wanted the dog friendly rear space...however, somebody solved that problem with this next car. Find this 2000 BMW M5 Touring offered for $24999 in Costa Mesa, CA via craigslist. Tip from Sean S who asked if we can bend the $20k rule for once...yes!

Rockin: 1941 Brooks Stevens Western Flyer RV

Legend has it that famed industrial designer Clifford Brooks Stevens contracted polio as a lad and started sketching designs as something to do while bedridden.  This story sounds reasonable, mostly because everybody born around the turn of the 20th century got a case of polio or two.  He might have started his career designing the robins egg blue '50s appliances that sat in every kitchen for a decade or two, but he also penned the '62 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk, '49 Harley Hydra-Glide, Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, the Miller Brewing logo, and later those heinous Excalibur fauxcedes roadsters...but before he was on crack he designed the most awesome RV ever. Find this 1941 Brooks Stevens Western Flyer RV here on eBay bidding for $31,200 reserve-not-met located in Linden, CA with 7 days to go.

DTO: Sraight Clown Shooter: 1999 BMW M Coupe

Tip and words from DT Contributor Andy L.  Here is an example of an awesome car that is getting rarer by the day, especially with mileage this low. Clean retail book for this car is $13000, but I don't think it applies to this car.  If you want to be one of the last remaining clown shoe jockeys, you are going to pay a premium.  Find this 1999 BMW M Coupe offered for $28,000 in Lincoln, NE via craigslist. The DTO (Daily Turismo Omologato) is a rare or interesting example of a DT-friendly classic or performance vehicle, but priced somewhere above the self imposed DT cap of $20k.

DTO: DOKA Explorer: 1978 Mercedes-Benz LA911B

The Mercedes-Benz L-series is a conventionally setup truck (engine in front), but with an engine that is pushed into the cab and is called a Kurzhuaber (Short Bonnet) in Germany.  It was a heavy duty monster designed for hauling trailers, but could also be available in a number of people hauling versions.  Find this 1978 Mercedes-Benz LA911B DOKA Explorer here on eBay offered for $35,000 buy-it-now or make-offer located in North Richland Hills, TX.  Tip from Sean.

DTO: Breadstang: 1966 Ford Mustang Sedan Delivery

Update: This 1966 Ford Breadstang is still for sale from the same dealer in Lakeland, FL.  Find it here on eBay, currently bidding for $25,100 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go.   DT's cub reporter Hunsbloger has this theory that the best money is almost always offered at the first auction, but we'll see if it gets near the $35k from last time.

Original Listing: March 28th, 2014:
The Ford Mustang was a huge hit when it was first released to show rooms in 1964 and Ford sold its millionth Mustang by mid 1966 - phenomenal sales numbers and a percentage of the US market share that entire auto manufacturing conglomerates would only dream about today.  The Mustang was available as a coupe, fastback and convertible and you had to switch to the lowly Falcon to get a Sedan Delivery version...until now.  Find this 1966 Ford Mustang Sedan Delivery currently bidding on ebay for $35,100 with less than 24 hrs to go, located in Lakeland, FL.

Fancy picking up a 70's supercar, but your investment in mortgage backed securities didn't pan out?  Fear not, because there is an option that gives you the prestige of a Lamborghini Mura with the performance of a Jaguar E-Type at the price of a used Nissan.  It is called the Alfa Romeo Montreal and combines a 7000 rpm V8 with a body by Bertone.  Find this 1970 Alfa Romeo Montreal currently bidding for $23,300 on eBay with a few hours to go, located in Harwich, MA. UPDATE: This eBay listing is a scam.  Read more here

DTO: Mickymaus-sarg: 1990 BMW M3 E30

What do you do when a small rodent dies in your car's ventilation system and starts emanating the rotten funk of decaying flesh?  As anaerobic organisms begin to consume the poor little whiskered fellow's remains, they produce a variety of noxious compounds including methane, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.  Your minty fresh BMW M3 suddenly becomes the The Ultimate Decaying Machine.  Do you put a bandana on your face and just drive through through the fetid stench or do you spray bleach into the vents and hope for the best?  The latter is what the seller did of today's 1990 BMW M3 E30 currently bidding for $19,999 reserve-not-met with 6 days to go on ebay, located in Glenmoore, PA.  Seller submission from Brian M.

DTO: Broke Angel: 1959 BMW 502 3.2 Super

The opportunity for regular working class folk to get into the seriously good stuff seen at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is indeed limited.  Well-to-do collectors have driven the price of desirable cars to undesirable levels due to an almost unlimited demand for vintage cars, but a limited supply.   As internet pundits, we see car deals in the same way a random dude playing fantasy hedge fund manager (tm!) sees stock deals, we gasp and shout (to ourselves) look at what a deal this is.  Today, we initially thought we found the next best thing to 1984 Apple stock...this 1959 BMW 502 3.2 Super offered for $25,000 in Greenville, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

DTO: Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler: 1957 Ford Thunderbird Custom

Mardi Gras is an oft-misunderstood festival of celebration in preparation for lenten fasting and penance observed in the Roman Catholic and Anglican tradition.  The name Fat Tuesday comes from the ritual clearing rich & fatty foods from the shelves of pantries in preparation for the fasting and eating bland foods for lent. Today the celebration of Mardi Gras (or Carnival/Shrove Tues) involves parades with people wearing masks, consuming copious quantities of alcohol and taking off their shirts...so what better way to avoid the lean days of lent than by sharing a few masked custom creations that will lighten your wallet.  Find this 1957 Ford Thunderbird Custom for sale in St Louis, MO from the guys at MotoeXotica currently bidding on ebay for $12,600 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go.

DTO: Is This Thing Kosher? 1963 Sabra Sport

Out of all the cars on the planet wearing a Cactus as an emblem, the Sabra is certainly the best.  It was a multinational effort, with a Ford engine, chassis by Ballamy and body by Ashley, all of which was assembled by Autocar Company in Haifa, Israel.  Autocar was a local Israeli builder of Reliant cars for the middle east, but managing director Yitzhak Shubinsky wanted to build his own fiberglass bodied sports car and the Sabra was born.  Today a used Sabra isn't just rare, the very knowledge of its existence is rare and the combination makes for a reasonable market.  Find this 1963 Sabra Sport for sale in North Miami, FL for $32,500 via the Dezer Collection.

DTO: LS911: 1999 Porsche 911 C4 with Chevy LS3 V8

Back in September we stumbled upon a Chevy V8 swapped 996 generation Porsche 911 that was a bit ragged around the edges but mechanically sound.  Another one popped up the other day, but in a much cleaner body.  Find this 1999 Porsche 911 C4 with Chevy LS3 V8 for sale in Plano, TX for $37,500 via craigslist.  Daily Turismo Omologato (DTO) is where we showcase cars that are above the standard DT price range, but are unique and worthy of a feature.

DTO: Coupe de Camino: 1984 Cadillac Custom Pickup

Before viewing today's next feature, you may want to put your wayfarers on ahead of time. This El Cadimino makes the absolute best use of some of the worst years of Cadillac as it started life as a 1984 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, has been converted into an El Camino look-a-like and is powered by an LT1 from a 1996 Impala SS.  Find this 1984 Cadillac Coupe de Camino Pickup for sale in SF Bay Area, CA via craigslist and classiccars.com. Tip from Kaibeezy.

DTO: Floatel 6: 1967 Amphicar

US President Lyndon Baines Johnson was a proud Amphicar owner and would drive at high speeds down hills in his Texas ranch screaming to his terrified passengers that the brakes had failed.  The Amphicar would splash into a small lake and LBJ would erupt into fits of laughter as his passengers soiled themselves.  We can't help you be the next POTUS or get the country into another intractable war in southeast Asia, subsequently refusing to accept a second nomination for your political party of choice...but...we found one of the few remaining Amphicars for sale, so you could give your friends/family a heart attack.  This 1967 Amphicar is for sale in Wellington, KS for $29,000 buy-it-now via ebay.  Tip from Kaibeezy.  Daily Turismo Omologato (DTO) is where we showcase cars that are above the standard DT price range, but are unique and worthy of a feature.

DTO: Bottom Of The Curve: 2000 Ferrari 456M

The Ferrari 456 is an odd car to be found on the pages next to a V8 RWD Focus, but this site isn't about what is hip/cool/rad - this site is about good deals.  So if you are a one percenter in the mood for a front engine V12 powered Ferrari (as the old man himself said all Ferrari's should be) don't waste that trust fund on some over priced/slow maintenance prone classic or the latest flashy 599GTXAlonsoRZZ22.  Act a little bit like your business savvy old man (or mom) and pick up something near the bottom of its price curve.  Find this 2000 Ferrari 456M for sale in Littleton, CO currently bidding on ebay for $24,600 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go.  Welcome to another edition of Daily Turismo Omologato (DTO) where we showcase cars that are above the standard DT price range, but are unique and worthy of a feature.

DTO: High Society: 1962 Jaguar Mk 2 Sedan

The Jaguar Mk 2 sedan  is one of the most beautiful 4-door saloon cars ever built.  Once the getaway car for gangsters trying to flee the rozzers and now a refuge from the humdrum dullness of just about everything else on the road, a classic Mk 2 will fetch a handsome sum in nice shape.  However, the asking price for this feature is extremely steep and may need another go-around or two before it finds a buyer.  Find this 1962 Jaguar Mk 2 sedan with Ford V8 power for sale in Saint Cloud, FL for $29,495 or best offer via ebay.

30k DT Exclusive DTO: 1963 Holman Moody Volvo 1800 Racer

The DTO (Daily Turismo Omologato) is a rare or interesting example of a DT-friendly classic or performance vehicle, but priced somewhere above the self imposed DT cap of $20k. We see these cars as weekend fun machines that you probably wouldn't want to drive to work every day, unlike a regular Daily Turismo. Today's DTO feature is none other than a genuine Holman Moody engineered 1963 Volvo 1800 road racer. The car has a long and documented history, has been a privateer track car since new, and was thoroughly reengineered and rebuilt by famed NASCAR racing team Holman Moody in the early 1980s. This is a Daily Turismo Exclusive listing - you won't find it anywhere else! It would be a great vintage racer and a solid investment given the history and unique setup. It is being offered by current owner Mitch Duncan, who has owned it since 1996 and is a retired Volvo Cars North America executive. It is available for $30,000 in the Moosehead Lake region of central Maine. Email us here if you are interested, and we will put you in touch with Mitch.

Previous owner / driver Bobby Ford looking rather dapper next to car No. 55.
