Honey I Shrunk the 401K: The 1965 Volvo PV544

The Volvo PV544 might be mostly recognizable as the car the Rick Moranis' character drove in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, but tipper SecondMouse calls it "the '65 Volvo that is NOT an 1800" and had this to say about the old Swede: If you have seen enough old Volvo Amazons and 1800s, here is a beautiful and relatively rare 1965 PV544. This was the last year they were made (except for the wagon version, which went on for a few more years). I love these classic, indestructible Volvos, and with their climbing prices, I am clearly not alone. The owner says this two door four seater has less than 75,000 miles on it (that's like 1400 miles a year) and is a four speed standard. Ice Blue Survivor: 1979 Saab 900 Turbo

How hard can it be to import a vehicle from Latvia?  Ignoring the current Coronavirus induced global shipping issues, I have to think that getting a car from Latvia imported into the USA and legal to drive on the street might be difficult for even the most seasoned car importer. But this next Saab Turbo is sooooooooo much nicer than the average Saab story that you find driving around on the mean streets of anytown USA.  And this car reminds me so much of the Draken 99 EMS that I want to ignore all of the warning signs and buy it.  Find this 1979 Saab 900 Turbo here on eBay bidding for $8600 in Latvia with a few hours to go.

Schneewittchensarg: 1973 Volvo 1800ES

The Volvo 1800ES was a shooting brake version of Volvo's aging P1800/1800S/1800E platform, meant to breath new life in the old parts.  The frameless glass tailgate equipped version only sold 8,000 units for the '72 & '73 model years, but the prices don't really reflect that level of exclusivity...yet.  As long as the Coronapocalypse doesn't cause wholesale classic car values to plunge, this thing should be on its way up. Shoulda Had a V4: 1974 Saab Sonett III

I've seen what happens when people buy the first year of a new car when it is released...and it usually isn't pretty.  The new model comes with new technology that always has some teething issues, so I generally recommend that people avoid the first few years of production...but what about the last year or so?  If the factory is being shut, will the assembly people care if your car is assembled correctly, or will they ignore the fine print on their work orders.  I think I'd take a risk on this next car because I can't imagine that any assembly issues haven't been worked out in the past 45 years. Will It Run in Peoria? 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan

There was an old saying in in Vaudeville that was particularly embraced by the instantly recognizable Groucho Marx -- "will it play in Peoria?" This figure of speech asks if something will be acceptable to redneck...errr...hillbilly mainstream America -- and the Volvo 240 asked that exact same question when it was released in 1975.  And the answer from the coast to coast was a resounding yes because Volvo sold 2.8 million examples of the 240 produced from 1974-1993 for sales around the globe, with a large percentage sold in North America.  If it played in Peoria when new, does it still play? The Third Newman-Letterman V8lvo? 1995 Volvo 960 V8 with Puffer

The most famous Volvo wagon (or wagons) of all time is the V8 swapped 960 wagon that Paul Newman owned -- the saga of this car was told years later by Dave Letterman and in 2014 Newman's wagon was found in a cheap used car lot -- that story was broken here on DT.  All built at the same time by Converse Engineering, Letterman's car was red, Newman's car was grey and a third car was built for Ian Warburg in Manhattan...and that car was blue.  So..imagine my surprise when this Kenne Bell puffer equipped 960 V8 Volvo comes through the tips line located somewhere in New York.  The blue paint is faded..but the under-hood details are so similar...the only question is the white interior shown in this old Jalopnik article seems to have been swapped for black...but some of the underhood details are so similar. Could this be the third of the three cars built by Converse for Newman/Letterman/et al? Almost Gold: 2001 SAAB 9-3 Viggen

The Christian feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th, (the word Epiphany comes from the ancient Greek work Τheophaneia meaning "vision of God") and is a commemoration of the three Magi visiting the infant Jesus.  Around here we celebrate the Epiphany by posting 3 cars, one for each of the magi, next up is Melchior who brought a gift of gold..but unfortunately all I could find is silver...which is close enough for a baby who is probably going to play with the packaging and the bubble wrap and couldn't tell the difference between gold and silver or a Viggen and an Aero. Global Epsilon Platform: 2011 Saab 9-5 Turbo S

The second generation (YS3G) Saab 9-5 was released in 2010 many years after GM had diluted secret Saab sauce into a tasteless broth and is scorned for its General-ness...but in truth the 9-5 was built under Dutch based Spyker Cars. Spyker was founded in 1999 by multimillionaire  Victor Muller as a way to build the expensive and bizarrely styled C8 Spyder and Laviolette.  In 2009 GM traded Saab to Muller for a set of used Gucci crocodile skin loafers, and the new Saab lasted for about 12 months before the pants fell of the scarecrow.  Regardless, for about 2 years, the subtly styled Saab 9-5 Aero was sold around the world at a hefty $50k MSRP. Prancing Moose: 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon

The OG Volvo 740 Turbo wagon combines a certain boxy-but-good styling with proper rear-drive driving dynamics and boooooooooooooost from a small exhaust driven puffer.  The entire package is offered for a reasonable price and I can't imagine why people flock in droves to drive late model Camrys when these are so cheap. 16V Turbo Powered: 1973 Saab 99

This next car tugs at my heartstrings a bit...not just because turbo...or because those wheels are wicked, or because manual gearbox...but mostly because I do miss the ole Draken DT project car. A more modern 16-valve turbo engine might give the 99 some needed thrust, but it won't fix the fact that this 46 year old hunk of steel was born of Jets but built by a bunch of crazy Swedes who thought exposed wiring terminals were fun and that a flywheel should be at the front of an engine. Sugga Taxi: 1954 Volvo PV831

The Volvo PV800 Sugga (Swedish for sow) was built from 1938 through 1958 for fleet use and dominated the Swedish taxicab market for most of its lifespan.  You don't find many around, but I would love to see if I could get uber or lyft to let me drive for them in it.
