The Volvo 1800ES was a shooting brake version of Volvo's aging P1800/1800S/1800E platform, meant to breath new life in the old parts.  The frameless glass tailgate equipped version only sold 8,000 units for the '72 & '73 model years, but the prices don't really reflect that level of exclusivity...yet.  As long as the Coronapocalypse doesn't cause wholesale classic car values to plunge, this thing should be on its way up. If any car-finding site has helped to drive up the values of Volvo's 1800ES shooting brake...then it's probably not us, but we were guilty of over-featuring the little mini wagon during our first few years on the web. For a long time these were affordable, incredibly stylish, and durable classics that could be used daily and make you look cooler than you really are. All of that is still true, except for the affordability part. Imagine our surprise when we found this 1972 Volvo 1800ES for sale in Las Vegas, NV for $6,500 via craigslist.

The C3 generation Corvette is the ugly redheaded step cousin of the Vette world -- stuck in the back row at Corvette car shows and regularly given swirlies in the locker room toilet.  However, if you want an affordable Vette from the 1960s, the C3 is just about the only way to go, and if you want to modify a Corvette into a shooting brake, it might as well be a C3.  Find this 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Breadvan offered for $20,000 in Junction City, KY via craigslist.  Tip from Seant.

Shooting Brake Bargain: 1972 Volvo 1800ES

The Volvo 1800ES is the quintessential Daily Turismo classic. We've featured at least 40 of them in the past 3.5 years; on average about 1 per month. There are myriad reasons for this: a) we like Volvos (well, at least I do, and I know Hunsbloger does) - they are ultra durable and easy to turn into fun drivers, 2) the 1800ES is a freakin' sexy shooting brake, and D) these aren't quite into overpriced rich-boy investment car territory yet, but they are on the rise. 20k: Shoot All The Brakes: 1994 Jaguar XJS Lynx Eventer

For years the British motoring community was caught between two paradigms.  Buy something sensible like a Vauxhall hatchback, or throw caution to the wind and buy a V12 powered Jaguar luxury coupe as an expression of your awesomeness.  This was the choice for years until a small engineering company called Lynx decided that the motoring masses should have their yorkshire pudding and eat it too! Lynx starting building shooting brake conversions of the XJS (now known as the Eventer) in 1982 and did not stop until 2002.  Find this 1994 Jaguar XJS Lynx Eventer offered for $25,000 via craigslist, located in Chicago, IL.

Happy Thorsday!! Try not to shoot coffee out of your nose at the thought of it, but I think Mazda should have made the Miata available as a shooting brake, right since the Year 0 Anno Miatae (i.e. 1989 AD). Stretching the roof, adding a hatch, and the wagon-defining D-pillar would make the Miata more than just a hairdresser's runabout or weekend track rat; it would turn this into something you could almost own by itself.

15k: 1979 Lancia Beta HPE; High Performance Estate

Last Sunday we took a look at a little "shooting brake" 2-door wagon from the '70s: this 1972 Ford Pinto. We made the comparison to the much higher-class Volvo 1800ES because of the similarities in the basic spec sheets of the two cars - and not to suggest the Pinto is equivalent in presence or substance! While the Pinto wagon may be as close as you're going to get to a stylish, running & driving shooting brake for $3500, there are other alternatives in the higher price bracket of the 1800ES. Have a gander at this Lancia Beta HPE (High Performance Estate) for example. It's sleek, it's classy, it has two doors and a big glass hatch in back. The only potential downsides to the ownership experience: it's wrong-wheel drive, and it's Italian. The upside: it's Italian. Ford's little '70s horse-themed compact has gotten more than its fair share of flak over the years, some deserved, some exaggerated. While a few rear-end collisions resulted in fiery wrecks, apparently the numbers were far less than popularly believed. A report called The Myth of the Ford Pinto Case might make us realize that although the Pinto may have been a crappy econo-box it wasn't drastically less safe than anything coming out of GM, Chrysler or AMC at the time. With that in mind, since we're all about budget-minded rides here at DT...we ask you to consider this two-door wagon as an American alternative to the Volvo 1800ES. Sure it may not have the Volvo's legendary solidity or durability, but the basic specs are all comparable and the price is drastically less than what a decent ES goes for. If you narrowly missed the chance to scoop up last week's Volvo 1800ES in San Diego for less than $8k and you don't mind a trip to the Beaver State, DT has found just the ride for you. It's no secret that DT is a big fan of the Volvo 1800ES. This little two-door "shooting brake" wagon represents just about the most extreme combination of quirky design with durable mechanicals that we can think of. Decent running examples seem to trade hands near $10k these days, but we've come across one that looks like a real bargain at $6900.
