The Third Newman-Letterman V8lvo? 1995 Volvo 960 V8 with Puffer

The most famous Volvo wagon (or wagons) of all time is the V8 swapped 960 wagon that Paul Newman owned -- the saga of this car was told years later by Dave Letterman and in 2014 Newman's wagon was found in a cheap used car lot -- that story was broken here on DT.  All built at the same time by Converse Engineering, Letterman's car was red, Newman's car was grey and a third car was built for Ian Warburg in Manhattan...and that car was blue.  So..imagine my surprise when this Kenne Bell puffer equipped 960 V8 Volvo comes through the tips line located somewhere in New York.  The blue paint is faded..but the under-hood details are so similar...the only question is the white interior shown in this old Jalopnik article seems to have been swapped for black...but some of the underhood details are so similar. Could this be the third of the three cars built by Converse for Newman/Letterman/et al? Find this 1995 Volvo 960 V8 with Puffer offered for an undisclosed sum of cash in Mamaroneck, NY via craigslist. Tip from Art.

4 Turbos and a Blower: 1992 Volvo 960 V8 Swap

How did I miss this car?  How did this auction get to "reserve-not-met" without so much as a peep from the pages of Daily Turismo?  Surely you guys, you tippers, bear some of the blame, but I blame myself even more for not keeping my eye on the ball.  The big, quad turbocharged, hairy chested, wheels that don't fit, engine that doesn't fit...ball.  SERIOUSLY, HOW DID I MISS THIS?  Find this 1992 Volvo 960 Custom V8 here on eBay with auction ended at $12,500 reserve-not-met in Orwigsburg, PA.

DT Favorite Sleeper Style: 1992 Volvo 960 5.3 "LS" Swap

If you are allergic to the "all show and no go" ethos commonly found on modern cars, we have a sleeper Volvo 960 sedan right up your alley today.  The seller has quite possibly the most understated V8 Volvo to ever grace these pages. This 960 is quite the find despite not being a wagon, not being brown, and having an auto transmission.  The trump card here is the universally lauded GM 5.3L V8 engine and the complete absence of other clues saying this car is a anything other than your college professor's daily driver.  It takes a lot of restraint to pull of a sleeper build of this magnitude.   You won't find a prancing moose badge on the front fenders, up-sized aftermarket wheels, menacing dual exhaust pipes, or any tinkering with the trunk badge to reflect more displacement.  Find this 1992 Volvo 960 for sale in Norton, MA for $7,000 via craigslist.

Cheap Box: 1996 Volvo 960

In 1990 Volvo launched a new platform, the 900-series, which boldly went where no Volvo had been before -- boxy, rear-drive, focus on safety, 4/6 cylinder engines...oh wait...that is exactly where ALL Volvos have been since about 17 milliseconds after the big bang.  This is indeed IS your grandfather's Volvo.  Find this 1996 Volvo 960 offered for $1600 in Naples, FL via craigslist. Tip from Dascpcu.

No Puffer: 1997 Volvo V90 LS1 swap

What is it exactly that makes a slab sided Volvo wagon with an American V8 so cool? Try to explain to a non-car enthusiast what exactly is so special about a Volvo wagon and you will get a puzzled look or get your sanity questioned. The now famous Paul Newman and David Letterman stories have undoubtedly added to the appeal of this engine swap. Find this very well executed 1997 Volvo V90 with a LS1/T56 swap for sale in Farmington Hills, MI for $11,400. Sellers take note, this is how to write a proper car advertisement.

Converse V8 Swap: 1993 Volvo 940 Wagon

Paul Newman's Volvo 960 V8 Wagon pops up for sale every few years at some astronomical asking price with the likes of Wayne Carini waxing nostalgic about it...but if you want a Converse Engineering V8 swapped Volvo, you don't need to be a trust fund kid, you just need patience and a good eye for a deal.  Find this 1993 Volvo 940 Wagon here on eBay bidding for $710 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go, located in Woodstock Valley, CT.  Tip from Scot.

5k: Ford 5.0 Powered: 1997 Volvo 960

The original famous Paul Newman Volvo V8 swap as told by Dave Letterman did not use a fuel injected Chevy V8, instead it used Ford power.  Like the Newman V8 Volvo, this one uses a Ford 5.0 V8  adapted to the Volvo body via a Converse Engineering swap kit and might not be as powerful as an LS1, but offers plenty of tire smoking fun.  Find this 1997 Volvo 960 with Ford V8 for $6,500 near Seattle, WA here on craigslist.  Tip from Oldsmobuick

Found! Paul Newman's 1995 Volvo 960 V8 With Puffer

For V8 Volvo nuts like us, finding Paul Newman's 960 for sale online is the equivalent of an archeologist finding Excalibur in a thrift store.  This supercharged wagon is stuff of legends and its story famously told on the air by David Letterman while being interviewed by John Stewart - read all about it from this 2003 story from Swedespeed later republished in 2010 via Jalopnik.  Cool Hand Luke himself passed in 2008 but the whereabouts of the "puffer" equipped custom was unknown...until now.  Paul Newman's 1995 Volvo 960 is for sale on cars-on-line.com for an undisclosed price, but with Auto Appraisal Network's 2011 appraisal of $95,000 attached to the ad.
