A good number of car enthusiasts would consider a brown turbo Volvo 5 speed wagon to be a dream daily driver. The 940's were the last of the durable rear wheel drive Volvos. Their 162 hp B230FT red block four cylinder engines respond like a duck to water to upping up the boost pressure. The Volvo 940 was an evolution 740 series, but was never offered with a manual transmission in the USA. Today's seller righted that wrong and fitted this 940 with a proper manual transmission from Europe along with a host of other go fast mods. made THE perfect sleeper platforms with both the 7 and 9 series cars, the wagons in particular. With a garage, some tools, and a spare v8 laying around, they could be absurd pavement pounders. Paul Newman, while probably not the first to look at a Volvo station wagon, and think Hmmm, I'd love to have an engine in this that could put my Labrador through the rear glass, he definitely made the swap more popular, especially with a second car, identical to Newman's Own, being commissioned for David Letterman. Surprisingly though, Jay Leno doesn't have one, and nor do I. My search of the interwebs will continue until I have enough cash to scoop one up. The first car to leave a factory (not really a factory, more like a workman's shed...) bearing the Volvo name was the ÖV4 -- the name was an abbreviation for "Öppen Vagn 4 cylindrar" (open carriage, four cylinder). The ÖV4, launched in 1927, used a classic longitudinal 4-cylinder engined mounted to a wooden chassis and powering the rear wheels, basic stuff that went unchanged for over 70 years. Sure, a few extra body panels were added, seat belts, turbochargers, FM radio, but the last rear-drive Volvo to leave the Swedish assembly line was a 900-series car, the final note in a long line of ice-hoonable vehicles.
