Will It Run in Peoria? 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan

There was an old saying in in Vaudeville that was particularly embraced by the instantly recognizable Groucho Marx -- "will it play in Peoria?" This figure of speech asks if something will be acceptable to redneck...errr...hillbilly mainstream America -- and the Volvo 240 asked that exact same question when it was released in 1975.  And the answer from the coast to coast was a resounding yes because Volvo sold 2.8 million examples of the 240 produced from 1974-1993 for sales around the globe, with a large percentage sold in North America.  If it played in Peoria when new, does it still play? Find this 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan offered for $2999 in Peoria, IL via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Thorsday Bluebird: 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan

Production of the Volvo 200 series started way back in 1974 (1975 in the USA) with a squared off shape penned by Volvo's master designer Jan Wilsgaard (known for his Volvo Amazon, P1800ES shooting brake, 164, 140, 740...you get the picture). The sedan version of the 240 might not be as "sporty" as the 2-door or as "cool" as the wagon, but they were built in huge numbers and offer a great combination of passenger room and secure storage space.   Wagons get all the glory for having extra storage space, but everybody can see the antique vases and dismembered corpses -- unlike in a sedan, where the junk in your trunk stays away from prying eyes. Find this 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan offered for $2000 in Washington, IA. Tip from Zach.

Maytag White: 1986 Volvo 240 Sedan

The Volvo 240 might not be the greatest car ever made (despite what DT's Volvo Enthusiast-at-Large CFlo might say) but you could certainly say it was the greatest boxy sedan to come from Sweden during the 1980s.  Find this 1986 Volvo 244 Sedan offered for $5,200 near Cleveland, OH via craigslist. Tip from Alex.

LT1 V8 Swap: 1977 Volvo 244

The numerous Volvo 240s that grace these pages seem to fall into two buckets, first is for the clean/original junkers that cost a few grand and would be great for a daily driver, and the second is for the Chevy V8 swapped hoon mobiles that also cost a few grand.  This next feature falls squarely into the second bucket.  Find this 1977 Volvo 244 V8 Swap LT1 offered for $5,000 in Largo, FL via craigslist.  Tip from Cory.

5k: Grey Hound: 1989 Volvo 240 Sedan

Nothing beats a simple, solid, rear-wheel drive, 4-cylinder, manual transmission sedan. There is plenty of room to wrench under the hood, with no fussy transaxle to get in your way. Something like the Volvo 240 series can be economical as a daily driver yet entertaining in the occasional autocross, parking lot slalom, or rainy-day dorifto on public streets during your morning commute (don't try this at home kids).  Find this 1989 Volvo 240 Sedan  with 98k miles on the odometer offered here on craigslist for $5,000, located in Boston, MA.  Tip from Carter.

FreeK: Happy Meal: 1979 Volvo 244

The world seems to be chock full of people who complain about how the price of everything keeps going up endlessly...heck, I'm one of them!!  Imagine my surprise when a tip came over for a late 70s Volvo sedan at 1930's used car prices.  Who says you can't get anything for cheap anymore?  Find this 1979 Volvo 244 offered for $5 via the 24 Hours of LeMons forums.  Tip from Dan.

3k: Plain White Paper: 1988 Volvo 240 DL, 4-door, 5-speed

Yesterday's low mile Volvo sedan was too much to take - slushbox, $10k price tag...MADNESS!!  It is time to get back to DT basics with this 1988 Volvo 240 5-speed offered for $2750 in the Bay Area, CA.  A 80s Volvo sedan won't get you front row parking from the Valet, but it will be a great family hauler and something to pickup rare parts for your Italian garage queen.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

0k: Free To A Good Home: 1989 Volvo 244

The current owner of this car "violet" (the car's name, not the owner's) acquired it to use as a 24Hrs of LeMons car, but is now in over his head.  The previous owner chimed in on the forums and mentions the car just stopped running on the highway and hasn't moved on her own power since.  Rear window is busted and interior is shot...but..hey...free car...right?  Find this 1989 Volvo 244 sedan offered to a good home in Stamford, CT via 24hoursoflemons.com forums.

5k: The PO's Money: 1992 Volvo 240 Turbo 5-spd

We here at DT love to repeat our unofficial mantra: There is no better money spent on a car...than the previous owner's. It rings true in so many situations, whether you are looking for a project that is half-finished with all the expensive work done, a package deal of car plus parts because the seller does not want to spend time hawking all the little stuff, or especially in the case of a finished car that will never be worth as much as the previous owner has spent on it. This last one is the best case scenario - finding a car built by a brand fanatic or detail freak who was never intending to sell, but has to part with their creation for one reason or another. With that in mind let's take a look at this customized 1992 Volvo 240, which has been fully rebuilt, professionally painted, given a late-model turbo engine and 5-spd manual swap and much more. Find it here on the Turbobricks.com classifieds forum listed for $6000 in Sykesville, MD.

0.5k: 1983 Volvo 244; Leopard Print Inside & Out

The Volvo 200 series is a regular winner here at the Daily Turismo.  We like it for its basic rear drive architecture, rack & pinion steering, available manual transmission and ultra cheap sticker.  This 1983 Volvo 244 (probably a DL) is wearing a animal print skin inside-and-out; for sale in Monmouth, IL for the leopard-skinflint price of $500.
