Prancing Moose: 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon

The OG Volvo 740 Turbo wagon combines a certain boxy-but-good styling with proper rear-drive driving dynamics and boooooooooooooost from a small exhaust driven puffer.  The entire package is offered for a reasonable price and I can't imagine why people flock in droves to drive late model Camrys when these are so cheap. Oh..yeah...it's gonna break down from time to time -- it helps to be handy with a wrench and a multimeter. Find this 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo offered for $1500 in Redding, CA via craigslist. Tip from GB.

Chevy LT1 V8: 1988 Volvo 740 Wagon

The Volvo 740 (aka 745) wagon was a fine piece of engineering from safety focused guys at Volvo, but even in turbocharged trim it won't open any eyes with acceleration...so...an entire boutique industry has been born to fix it with injection of American V8 power -- even Paul Newman shoved a V8 into his Volvo wagon...but today we've got a special treat.  Find this 1988 Volvo 740 with V8 offered here on eBay for $2,900 buy-it-now located in Belen, NM with 4 days to go.

Seller Submission: 1990 Volvo 745 Wagon

This next car comes as a seller submission from Mike W who writes:
This is a car that I originally found in Richmond VA two years ago through DT.  It needed a whole lotta love to get it back to where it needed to be, but there was a great foundation to work with.  It had me at Fuel injection, stick shift, RWD v8 volvo.

Varg I Fårakläder: 1986 Volvo 745 Wagon, Ford V8

DT E-i-C Vince: This next feature is written by John Harbinson, who you may recognize as the teenage car collector from the BringATrailer.com People's Choice Best Feature of 2014 that he won for buying an old rusting pile of Jensen parts.  John raised his hand when we offered folks the chance to write for Daily Turismo and this is his first (hopefully of many) feature:  The above Swedish phrase, translates to "a wolf in sheep's clothing", and this impressive Volvo 740 wagon epitomizes the phrase. This particular 740 wagon started life with a diesel powerplant, but was converted to Mustang power in 1998 with a kit from Converse Engineering, the same company who built the 960 wagon for David Letterman and Paul Newman. Find this 1986 Volvo 745 wagon with Ford V8 swap offered for $6,000 in Richland, WA via craigslist.

10k: LT1 Powered: 1990ish Volvo 740 Wagon

Many of the V8 powered Volvo wagons you find are low budget form follows function burnout machines that have Humboldt State University stickers patching up rust holes, but this next one is really nice looking...well...nice looking for a boxy Swedish wagon.  Find this 1990ish Volvo 740 Wagon with LT1 V8 and 6 speed manual gearbox offered for $12,000 via V8volvos.com classifieds.   Tip from Matt.

5k: Winters Beatings: 1991 Volvo 740 GLE 16-Valve Wagon

Folks outside a few select locations don't have the luxury of driving a vintage convertible 12 months out of the year and sometimes even people who live near a tropical beach have to drive 42 miles in bumper-to-bumper traffic.  What this means is that the normal requirement for fun driving gets thrown out the window, and now you simply need a car that runs and fits as much crap on the inside while being as economical as possible.  What about this 4-cylinder powered, slushbox equipped wagon for less than three large?  Find this 1991 Volvo 740 GLE Wagon offered here on craigslist for $2,500 in Scripps Ranch, CA.

10k: Yoshifab V8lvo Again: 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap

At first glance this simple Volvo 740 might look like another soccer mom mobile, but peek under the hood and...great horns on Thor's helmet...the Yoshifab LS1 Volvo is back for sale again.  You might remember when it first appeared in late 2012 from its builder Yoshifab,(who sold it for $8k according to his facebook page), it popped back up on ebay in March, then April 2013 from a seller in Ohio and then back on ebay in October of 2014 where it finally sold for $10,020. The new owner claims he decided he wasn't a V8 guy and put it back on eBay.  Find this 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap currently bidding for $7,800 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go, located in Elmwood Park, IL.

10k: Three Strikes Offender: 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap

The Volvo 740 is an unlikely vehicle to lay thick black stripes through multiple gears on dry pavement, but here indeed we have it....again.  If you are a regular on this site, you might remember when it first appeared in late 2012 from its builder Yoshifab, and then when it popped back up on ebay in March and then April 2013 from a seller in Ohio.  Surprise, surprise, this 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap is back on eBay, currently bidding for $9,500 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go, still located in Euclid, OH.

5k: I Feel Gassy: 1990 Volvo 745 Wagon V8 Swap

The Volvo wagon V8 swap might not have been invented by the legendary Paul Newman, but he certainly put it on the map with the mythical story of the of puffer fed cars as told by Dave Letterman.  The Letterman V8lvo was featured in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and the Paul Newman Volvo was rediscovered by DT in 2013 and purchased by Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars.  As interesting as the actual Newman V8lvo is, the $100k price was a killer for anyone but a die-hard Newman fan and one percenter, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy V8lvo performance for much less.  Find this 1990 Volvo 740 Wagon V8 Swap offered for $4,000 via grassrootsmotorsports classifieds.  Tip from Scot C.

5k: Grandma Had a Turbo: 1988 Volvo 745Ti

I think it's fairly safe to say that most grandmothers drive cars that are slow and sensible. Camrys, CR-Vs, maybe the occasional Delta 88 Brougham. One of my grandmothers drove a circa 1980 beige Chevrolet Malibu 4-door sedan, and the other a 1976 Dodge Colt in metallic green with a vinyl top. Both were basic transportation but did a fine job of hauling grandkids, antiques, and flower pots. The average Volvo wagon would also fit this bill nicely. But what if grandma had a turbo? A Volvo 745 wagon, with a manual transmission no less? Some lucky kid had just such a grandma, and now her car is for sale. Find this 1988 Volvo 745 Turbo for $4500 in Northern Virginia via craigslist.

10k: Looked Up Sleeper In Dictionary: 1991 Volvo 740 LT1 V8

Another week half in the bag, which means it is Thorsday and time to bring out the best junk we could find that originally hails from the Scandinavian Peninsula.  This next feature started life as a simple Volvo sedan, probably purchased new by an insurance salesman named Steven as a practical car for his wife Beth to take the kids to soccer practice.  As the kids grew up, Steven and his wife grew apart and Steven got the car back in the lightly contested divorce.  Steven hated the way the car reminded him of Beth and the slow and cautious way in which she approached life, from the way she approached eating chicken wings with a fork to the carefully folded sleeves on her favorite reindeer Christmas sweater. Even the kids had adopted Beth's watered down community college aspirations and the Volvo...that slow and plodding 4-cylinder powered pile of safety was a constant oozing scab in Steven's new apartment driveway.  Steven needed a change, so he grew a mullet, joined a cross-fit club, and shoved a fire-breathing V8 mated to a 6-speed manual into front of the Volvo.  At least, that is what could have happened...who really knows the truth?  Find this 1991 Volvo 740 LT1 V8 offered for $8,500 in Moraga, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Andrey S.

Get A Bucket: 1990 Volvo 740

This 1990 Volvo 740 GLE Wagon is said to have the rear jump seats and appears to seat seven passengers.  It is said to have recently had some maintenance, but might need a new timing belt or excorsism...who knows, it is very reliable, until it stops working.  Great car.  Lots of patina.  Find it here on craigslist for $700 in Richmond, CA.

2k: Cheap Speedy Swede: 1989 Volvo 745 Wagon Ford 5.0 V8 Swap

The Volvo 700 was launched in 1985 as a planned replacement for the aging 200 series, but the older 200 surprisingly outlived the 700 by a few years before everything was tossed aside for the front drive 850 and the era of rear-drive (aka fun-drive) Volvos faded into history.  Volvo enthusiasts call this model the 745, the 4 designating the number of cylinders and the 5 for number of doors, but it is probably more accurately called a 785.  Find this 1989 Volvo 745 Wagon 5.0 V8 Swap for sale in House Springs, MO for $2400 via craigslist.  Tipped from the original Scot back in August..  Also posted by DoucheMcGee  on oppositelock.jalopnik.com

10k: Repeat Offender: 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 V8 Swap

We featured this car when it first listed from its builder Yoshifab late last year, and then when it popped back up on ebay from a bidder in Ohio...but it is still for sale.  We just don't understand how the flipper in Ohio thinks he could make profit after shipping/taxes/fees when the previous seller's ad was clearly a good representation of the car.  Regardless we can't get enough of these smokey burnout photos from this 1992 Volvo 740 with LS1 swap, now located in Euclid, OH bidding at $10,100 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go.

5k: I-Roll In My V8lvo: 1985 Volvo 740 Wagon w/ 5.0V8 and T-5

Anyone familiar with early 90's hip hop artist Robert Matthew Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) will know his ode-to-the-Mustang single "Rollin In My 5.0" and anyone familiar with Volvo history will know the genesis of the company's name comes from the Latin "volvere," literally "I roll".  Mix one part 5.0 and one Volvo...ergo, I-roll in my Volvo.  Painful explanation of the bad pun complete, we move on to the car.  Find this 1985 Volvo 740 wagon with a Mustang 5.0 V8 and T-5 manual transmission for sale in Mount Vernon, OR for $3,500 via craigslist.  Thanks to reader Arthur C. for the tip.

5k Flash: Sleeper in Seattle; 1980s Volvo 700 with Ford 5.0 V8

We really hate to give the Unsold Adams award to a cool sleeper that hides a V8 under its hood - a literal Fox in Sheep's clothing...but this ad is totally devoid of appropriate information to sell a car.  Find this 1980-ish Volvo 700-ish with a Ford 5.0 V8 swap in for sale in Seattle, WA for $3,000 via craigslist.
