In 1966 Oldsmobile introduced the limited edition W30 option package to the Olds 442 -- it was a cold air induction setup, a hot cam, and trunk relocated battery.  For years the secret to getting a fast/fun Oldsmobile was finding those W-machines as they are known today and the last to leave the production line was the W41 option for the Oldsmobile version of GM's N-body compact, the Achieva. 5k: Cheap Roller Skate: 1991 Toyota Camry

 Words and tip by Kaibeezy.  My mom bought a Maytag washer in the 60's that lasted for 40 years. When the repairman could no longer get parts, she had to get a new one. Which lasted 5 years, as did its replacement. Cheap profit engineered crap. I'd guess this Camry, or better yet a Mercedes or BMW of the same vintage, would last longer than a new one bought today, driven the same. 10k: VTEC: 2001 Honda Prelude 5spd, Low Miles

The Honda Prelude should be considered one of the ultimate Japanese pony cars for a few reasons.  First, it cribbed the classic pony car formula: take a standard family car chassis, add dramatic long-hood coupe styling and give it more power, but keep most of the mechanical parts the same.  Second, Honda didn't have a Falcon chassis to turn into a Mustang, so they used the Accord sedan bits to build a very competent and fun pony car.  Find this 2001 Honda Prelude with only 26k miles on the odometer for sale in Scottsdale, AZ currently bidding for $8,600 reserve-not-met with one day to go.

5k: Not Your Grandpa's Caddy: 1981 Volkswagen Caddy Diesel 5spd

The Volkswagen Caddy is a VW Golf/Rabbit based pickup truck, typically powered by a diesel engine and generally known for being frugal with fuel and slower than a kid's powerwheel ride-on toy. Seriously, purgatory levels of slow mixed with diesel fumes...but..and here is the BIG but...I can't help but like them.  It is probably some deep character flaw based on years of being forced to drive diesel automobiles, but for the short period of time that I drove a VW Rabbit diesel, it was actually an enjoyable experience.  Slow, but fun.  Find this 1981 Volkswagen Caddy Diesel for sale in Ashland, OR, currently bidding at $3,150 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go.

5k: Grand Theft Anonymous: 1987 Renault GTA 2.0L engine, 5 Speed

Two Renault Alliance listed in one week - heads are gonna roll, keyboards are going to be smashed, SOMEBODY has to answer to this.  Whoa, calm down, this isn't a slow boat to nowhere convertible version, this is the sweet GTA (Grand Theft AWESOME) version and is the best thing to be exported from France since lady liberty herself crossed the ocean blue.  Find this 1987 Renault Alliance GTA 5spd for sale in Burlington, WI.  Go there for the cheese, stay for the GTA.

5k: Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion: 1978 Honda CVCC 5Spd

The first generation Honda Civic was built in Japan and New Zealand from 1973 to 1979.  It was initially only available in the USA with a generic 1.2 liter 4-banger, but a later, spiffy high-tech 1.5 liter 4-pot called the CVCC was also available.  Most first generation Civics have rusted into oblivion, but a few lucky dry state examples have survived and are now kinda cool in a funky-retro way.  Find this 1978 Honda Civic CVCC 5-spd for sale in Independence, CA currently bidding on ebay for $2,050 with 1 day to go.

We've heard (and said!) it many times: BMWs are the best, they even smell great covered in guano, they taste good dipped in ipecac and wagons are even better...yaddy-yaddy-yah <insert generic BMW fanboy nonsense here>.  The real problem is that you can't beat the amount of depreciation and hoonability of a good used BMW, especially the 5-series because they plummet in price like hay prices after the circus leaves town.  What is better than a cheap 5-series wagon like we've posted in the past? 5k: I-Roll In My V8lvo: 1985 Volvo 740 Wagon w/ 5.0V8 and T-5

Anyone familiar with early 90's hip hop artist Robert Matthew Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) will know his ode-to-the-Mustang single "Rollin In My 5.0" and anyone familiar with Volvo history will know the genesis of the company's name comes from the Latin "volvere," literally "I roll".  Mix one part 5.0 and one Volvo...ergo, I-roll in my Volvo.  Painful explanation of the bad pun complete, we move on to the car.  Find this 1985 Volvo 740 wagon with a Mustang 5.0 V8 and T-5 manual transmission for sale in Mount Vernon, OR for $3,500 via craigslist.  Thanks to reader Arthur C. for the tip.

2k Flash: Back To Basics: 1986 Peugeot 505, 5spd, Survivor

The Peugeot 505 was the final rear-wheel-drive car from French automaker Peugeot and was produced in stunning quantities worldwide, even though you don't see many here in the United States.  Between 1979 and 1995, over one million 505s were built in factories in France, Argentina, China, Indonesia and Taiwan, but only a few made it to the US, and fewer remain on the road today.  Find this 1986 Peugeot 505 with 5spd trans for sale in the SF Bay Area, CA for $2,500 via craigslist.  Another great find from DT regular Kaibeezy T!

5k: 1981 Honda Prelude 5spd; Survivor

The first generation Honda Prelude was as close as Honda ever got to building a pony car. It used Mustang the formula of: shared mechanical bits from a sedan, a larger engine and long hood short/trunk styling.  The later Preludes had sophisticated VTEC engines and 4-wheel-steering, but we like the simplicity of the lightweight early versions.  This 1981 Honda Prelude 5-spd is an all-original survivor, find it in Oregon City, OR currently bidding on ebay for $1,225 with 2 days to go.

15k: 1990 Nissan 300ZX TT 5spd; Minty Clean

We've said this before, but the Nissan 300ZX is the automotive equivalent of fat Elvis - the final conclusion of many famous celebrities & cars: heavy, slow, chrome-covered and an met with an untimely death.  That doesn't stop us from admiring the final hurrah of the king of boost from the 1990s, and the prices for the Z32 generation 300ZX couldn't be better.  This 1990 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo with 5spd manual is for sale in Sewell, NJ currently bidding on ebay for $12,100 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go.

5k: 1981 BMW 320is 5spd E21

 The E21 generation BMW 3-series was built in Munich and more than 1 million sold around the globe from 1975 to 1983.  It was the yuppie icon in the USA, a perfect way to show the world that you were young, sporty and well-off.  Most of them have since fallen apart due to abuse and neglect, but the nice ones are now starting to be collectable.  This 1981 BMW 320is 5psd is black on black and looks really nice for the $5800 asking price in Pacifica, CA via craigslist. 5k: 1982 BMW 735i E23 Euro 5spd

 The e21 (correction, E23 - DT regrets the error) generation BMW 7-series sedan was the uber-sedan labeled as 7 and is still a stately and cool today as it was from 1977 to 1986.  The 735i model was powered by an inline 6 cylinder engine and boasted some serious gadgets and sophistication for the era, but was not available with manual transmission on this side of the Atlantic.  Thankfully, the 735i was available with 5spd manual in Europe and someone imported this 1982 BMW 735i and it is now for sale in San Diego, CA from dealer who specializes in Cereal, Marshmallows and one-owner original cars on ebay for $5,807 buy-it-now.
