Thunderbolt from Finland: 2000 Saab 93 Viggen

This next car comes as a tip from Johnny Bouncewell who writes: Man, I don't NEED another Viggen but this one sure is tempting.  Right number of doors, OEM wheels, and the proper six speed transmission.  Yes JB, you are correct, the combination of a 2.3 liter turbo-4 boosted to 230 horsepower is cool, but only 138 examples of the 3-door made it into the USA for the 2000 MY (764 over the 5 year model span)...so it is cool and rare. Find this 2000 Saab 93 Viggen offered for $5000 in Albuquerque, NM via craigslist.

Basic Transport: 2006 Saab 9-2X Linear

The Subaru WRX was a suped up version of the standard base Subaru Impreza  -- the WRX added a turbocharger and some fun sometime in the 2001 model year.  In 2005 Saab got into the all-wheel-drive fun game and launched the 9-2X which was available in WRX-turbo Aero version and in the basic non-turbo Linear model.  This next car is the slow and steady non-turbo and slushbox equipped Linear, but the asking price is almost scrap value low. Find this 2006 Saab 9-2X Linear offered for $1800 in Maynard, MA via saabnet.com. Tip from BarbPaddles.

Cheap Project: 1972 Saab 96 V4

This next car comes as a tip from Erik202 who writes: If you’re going to buy what amounts to a rolling shell with potential you could do much much worse. Yup, the seller admits that the powertrain has been disassembled, but the German built Taunus V4 is one of those little engines that you can rebuild in your garage with a pair of pliers, a 6-pack of Heineken, and a jar of Loctite. And this is the kind of car that you will drive everywhere because you won't worry about rock chips but you will worry about missing out on beautiful mountain views because you are grabbing fistfuls of opposite-lock. Find this 1972 Saab 96 V4 offered for $2500 CAD ($1800 USD) in Calgary, AB via kijiji.net.

Yurts When I Laugh: 1972 Volvo P1800ES

Nothing says "you've made it" like living in a yurt and driving a rusty old Volvo...wait a minute...that's not right. Nothing says "you've made it two more days without officially being declared homeless" like living in a yurt and driving a rusty Volvo, but I really like this next car and I could imagine living in a yurt if given the chance. Find this 1972 Volvo P1800ES offered for $4900 in Pescadero, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Aero Dynamite: 2008 Saab 9-5 Aero

I'm not entirely sure why I'm inexplicably drawn towards these late model Saabs...because reliability is meh, and parts availability is arrrgg...but the way the funky styling, turbo power and manual gearboxes is a combination hard to ignore.  Find this 2008 Saab 9-5 Aero offered for $5995 in Phoenix, AZ via craigslist.  Tip from Zach Z.

Bring Any Offer - 1966 Volvo 122S

Surely there is someone here who has an old Volvo and just wants a different one. Well, now there are two of you. Have a gander at this Amazon that the seller is keen to trade for just another old Volvo. If you don't have any derelict Swedish iron laying around, I guess you could max out your daily limit at the ATM and head over for a cash offer.  Find this 1966 Volvo 122S for sale in Charleston, SC for pretty much whatever you feel like giving.

Swedish Rolls: 1975 Volvo 164E

The name Volvo comes from the latin Volvere which means "I roll", so it is not without some degree of irony that the next seller calls his Volvo a "Swedish Rolls".  And here I thought a Swedish Roll was a freshly baked Kardemummabullar.  Find this 1975 Volvo 164E offered for $3,200 in St Paul, MN via craigslist.  Tip from James.

It'll Make You A New Man: 1982 Volvo 242 GLT V8 Swap

I can't say enough nice things about the Volvo 240.  And this is entirely true because I'm afraid that if I say something bad about the 240 that DT's CFlo will run me down in a crosswalk with one of the dozen or so boxy Volvos that litter his driveway, yard, street, and surrounding community.  So anyway, they are the bestest cars that notalotta money can buy but even MORE better when powered with a Ford V8.  Find this 1982 Volvo 242 GLT V8 Swap offered for $3,500 in Baltimore, MD via craigslist.

Basket Case: 1972 Saab 99

This next one goes out to the adventurous of spirit and the criminally insane.  Because, let's face it, you are one or the other if you ever consider purchasing a $500 Saab 99.  Find this 1972 Saab 99 offered for $500 somewhere in the East Mountains of Mordor. Tip from FuelTruck.

Hot Swede: 1991 Saab 900 SPG

Backing packing through Scandinavia is easy on the eyes.  Sweden in particular offers stunning scenery, architecture...and skönhet in the fairer sex.  It also produced some of the most reliable and practical cars on the planet.  What happens when you take one of these cars and transform it in to a hot hatch?  Find this 1991 Saab 900 SPG for sale in Minneapolis, MN for $5,500 via craigslist.

Rally Like Erik: 1966 SAAB 96 Special

We all know Thorsday is the best day of the week. How can you have Thorsday without awesome Swedish steel? You can’t, so for your consideration is this example of a car with an engine that sounds like a nest of angry bees, needs oil, and may possibly smoke more than a middle school student behind the teacher’s lounge. With emission standards tightening it is hard to find two stroke marine engines and weed eaters let alone automobile engines. The rules are making it harder, and I submit conspiring, to prevent us from unleashing our inner Erik Carlsson and beating the likes of Porsche, MG, and fellow Swede Volvo in a rally stage with an underpowered car. But wait! Here is your opportunity as some hero has listed this 1966 SAAB 96 Special on Craigslist in Upton Massachusetts for a mere $6,000.00. That price is of course U.S. Dollars and not Swedish Krona.

Classic Driver: 1967 Volvo 122S Amazon

I may have been spending too much time with CFlo, because I am starting to appreciate (and like) classic Volvos like the 122/122S/Amazon.  The simple truth is that these funky little Swedish sedans are cheap to buy, drive, and maintain.  What else can you ask for in a classic?  Find this 1967 Volvo 122S Amazon offered for $4,000 in Escondido, CA via craigslist.

Letters To DT: 2005 Saab 9-2X

Dear DT: Unless I'm totally wasted, this seems like an amazing deal?   2005 Saab 9-2X offered for $6500 near Baltimore, MD -- Jeff S.
Dear Jeff S: Unfortunately (if you are a Saabaru owner) or fortunately (if you want to be a Saabaru owner) prices for late model Saabs are following the depreciation curve of 80s Audis, which means that even the most turbochargest and all-wheel-drivest of the bunch will be worth about $4.85 in a few years.  But that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy one or that this 66k mile example doesn't look like a good deal.  However, the consensus here is that the "cookie" your friend brought you from Colorado was laced with something green and you might wanna invest in some clean urine for your next job application -- check with some Olympic athletes for the best sources.

Momster Truck: 1986 Volvo 740GLE Turbo Diesel Trar

(Two years ago this was for sale, not it's back) -- People often forget that the load carrying capacity - or let's say utility in general - of a vehicle is directly proportional to how many eff's you don't give about it. Ever see that guy at the landscape supply having a half-yard of mulch dumped into the trunk of a Kia Sephia? Or the dude hunting out of a Matrix with a salvage title? He doesn't need a truck and an economy car because he already has both of them. Find this lifted 1986 Volvo 740GLE Turbo Diesel for sale in Havre de Grace, MD for $1,800 via craigslist.

Boxy But Good: 1990 Volvo 240 DL

Production of the Volvo 200 series started way back in 1974 (1975 in the USA) with a squared off shape penned by Volvo's master designer Jan Wilsgaard (known for his Volvo Amazon, P1800ES shooting brake, 164, 140, 740...you get the picture). For car with remarkably unsporty looks the 240 actually did well in motorsports with a number running touring car classes in Europe, and even a non factory backed Group A rally effort -- but the 240 had the most success as a cheap amateur racer at the hands of hooligans around the globe.  Get your own by buying this 1990 Volvo 240 DL bidding for $3,049  here on eBay with 4 days to go, located in Waynesboro, VA.  Seller submission from Walter.

5k: Oddity: 1987 Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe

This next feature comes courtesy of a tip from Andy L who writes:   I like it, even though it reminds me of a 2-door Chevy Celebrity and a Maserati Bi-turbo.  Driving up a hill.  It probably performs about as well too!!  Find this 1987 Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe offered here on eBay for $7,500 buy-it-now with a few hours to go, located in Long Island City, NY.
