The Saab 9-2X (aka the Saabaru) tones down some of the boy racer Japanime styling of the Subaru Impreza WRX, but keeps the neck-snapping turbocharged 2 liter flat-4 and asphalt-gripping all-wheel-drive.  Saab sold a few more than 10,000 examples of the odd little wagon and this next one is high mile example, but cheap. We like the Saabaru because it combines cool Saab styling with the reliable and trusty Subaru Impreza wagon chassis.  From 2005-2006 Saab sold rebadged WRXs as the 9-2X, the 'Aero' trim was the one to get because it came with a turbocharged engine and 2006 model year had a detuned STi engine. Dear Jeff S: Unfortunately (if you are a Saabaru owner) or fortunately (if you want to be a Saabaru owner) prices for late model Saabs are following the depreciation curve of 80s Audis, which means that even the most turbochargest and all-wheel-drivest of the bunch will be worth about $4.85 in a few years.  But that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy one or that this 66k mile example doesn't look like a good deal.  However, the consensus here is that the "cookie" your friend brought you from Colorado was laced with something green and you might wanna invest in some clean urine for your next job application -- check with some Olympic athletes for the best sources.

When Saab released the 9-2x wagon based on a Japanese import, it seemed like a gift from the heavens.  You get your funky Scandinavian badge with reliable Japanese powerplant, except that the car was built by Subaru...which means you get a car with plastics that look like they came from a yogurt container factory, and an engine that is powerful, but easily turned into scrap metal with extra boost.  Thankfully, sourcing a new engine isn't too expensive and getting something with more oomph is as easy as overnight parts from Japan.  Find this 2005 Saab 9-2x Aero Wagon with EJ207 power offered here on NASIOC forums for $7,900 if you bring your own wheels or $9,000 with the current rolling stock.

The Subaru flat-4  has been given a pass from enthusiasts for being unreliable even though they routinely act like Alec Baldwin when he sees a traffic cop...which is to say they froth at the seals and blow up suddenly. I only say this because of the extrodinary number of WRX/STi/9-2xs offered at around 80k miles with a new engine.  Subaru could probably use Mazda's rotary engine reliability weibull charts and be pretty accurate if craigslist is any indicator.  But, if you buy one with a new engine that should mean another 80k of Billy behavior before it goes all Alec at the next meter maid you pass.  Find this 2005 Saab 9-2X Wagon offered for $11,500 buy-it-now on ebay with a few hours to go, located in Milford, CT.
