You don't see a lot of Toyota RAV4s on the pages of DailyTurismo...but that doesn't mean you shouldn't own one because they offer a level of usability and reliability for a light crossover that is almost unmatched...and the older ones are starting to become cool...in a goofy way. Today's first generation RAV4 is a 3-door version with electric blue paint and Lexus ES300h wheels. Find this 1996 Toyota RAV4 offered for $4900 in Florida via Dave's blogger site. I Will Survive: 1984 Toyota Corolla LE
At first I was afraid, I was econofied,
Kept thinking I could never live with my engine turned to its side
But my front wheels plowed so many miles thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to live with bronze
And my plastics black
My seats are tan
I seat as many people as your crummy old van
I should have changed my steering lock, I should have made you leave your key
If I'd known for just one second that you'd try to hot wire me
Go on now, go, slam that mint condition door
Just do some front-wheel peel now
'Cause you're not rear drive anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with a slide
Do you think my interior would crumble
Did you think my clearcoat would lay down and die?
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to change gears, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my clutch to slip
And I've got all that 4A torque to give and I'll survive
I will survive, hey, hey...Find this 1984 Toyota Corolla LE offered for $4200 in Portland, OR via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Longbed Shortfuse: 1978 Toyota Pickup
The HiLux is legendary for its rugged chassis and bulletproof R-series engines...that's certainly part of the reason it is the favorite for lawn care workers in the USA and militias around the globe. Toyota released in the first HiLux back in 1968 as a replacement for their Stout pickup, and production of the little machine lasted through 1995 for the US market, but it continues to be built in various other markets and we get the larger Tacoma pickup. Today's Pickup looks in great shape, but it needs a new headgasket -- how hard can that be? Find this 1978 Toyota Pickup offered for $2000 in Gilbert, AZ via craigslist.Monday, June 15, 2020

Cheap Rally Machine: 1988 Mazda 323 GTX

This next tip comes from Matt C who writes: Sure, everyone knows about the Subaru WRX and Lancer EVO. The Celica All-Trac bowed out earlier, but it's notorious for one of the most epic cheating methods in motorsports. And some rally fans will remember the Mitsubishi Gallant VR4. But how many remember Mazda's entry? Well, you can take advantage of this obscurity (and a transmission problem) to snag one for under $2000! Find this 1988 Mazda 323 GTX offered for $1999 in Canton, GA via craigslist.Wednesday, June 10, 2020
Rally Dreams: 2005 Subaru Forester XT
The Subaru Forester was launched in 2007 as Subaru's first entry into the (then small, now large) segment known as the crossover SUV, but the Forester was a long way away from being an AMC Eagle. A few years later Subaru put a slightly detuned version of their 2.5 liter turbo motor from the legendary Impreza WRX STI and called this new model the Forester XT. Today, as cheap used cars, they offer an interesting combination of off roadiness, boosted all-wheel-drive fun, and manual gearboxes that'll challenge all takers for a few grand. Find this 2005 Subaru Forester XT offered for $5000 in Atlanta, GA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Save Me The Crusher: 1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo

This next car comes from tipper Matt C who writes; It needs a lot of work - but the engine is still in the car and the connecting rods are still in the engine, which is about all you can ask for a $750 turbo DSM. For that matter, that's a lot to ask of a turbo DSM at twice the asking price. Find this 1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo offered for $750 near Atlanta, GA via craigslist.Friday, June 5, 2020
Fuel of Slowtan: 1983 Nissan Sentra Diesel

I've owned and driven some slow cars in my time...so I don't say this lightly...but this next car is slower than a herd of snails on a plate of peanut butter. The basic gasoline powered Sentra was slow with its 1.6 liter gasoline 4-banger drooling to 60mph in about 14 seconds, but the 1.7 liter CD17 non-turbo diesel was an absolute boat anchor and would have possibly gotten to 60 in less than 18 seconds with a strong tail wind. But...if my experience owning an '81 Rabbit Diesel taught me anything...it is that slow can be exhilarating -- just try merging on the freeway and tell me your pulse rate doesn't skyrocket like a snail trying to cross the racing surface during the annual Bonneville salt flat speed week. Find this 1983 Nissan Sentra Diesel offered for $3500 in Cerritos, CA via craigslist.Wednesday, June 3, 2020
Hold My Jackaroo: 1991 Isuzu Trooper

Most people know the big three Japanese auto manufactures Honda, Nissan and Toyota for their mainstream approach to car design and sales...but Japan has many auto manufacturers for an island that has less than 2% of the world's population. If Mazda is the other Japanese car manufacturer like pork is the other white meat, and Subaru is lamb...then where does that leave Isuzu (and don't even start with Daihatsu and Suzuki)? Isuzu might not export cars into the USA anymore, but for a few decades it was an interesting alternative to the other guys...and another other white meat...maybe ostrich? Find this 1991 Isuzu Trooper offered for $3500 in Hollywood, CA via craigslist.Monday, June 1, 2020
R32 Slowzilla: 1991 Nissan Skyline GTS25

For decades the Nissan Skyline was forbidden fruit over here in the USA -- and it wasn't until they replaced the classic inline-6 with a V6 that it was imported into the USA and then it was called an Infinity G35 (and alternatively Nissan GTR in Godzilla spec) and it was really a disappointment. Thankfully you can import older Skylines into the America these days and you can even find cheap examples if you are willing to live with an automatic gearbox and a low spec non-turbo version. Find this 1991 Nissan Skyline GTS25 offered for $11900 in New Hampshire via craigslist. Tip from TeleArrow.Tuesday, May 19, 2020
A Little More Cowbell Doors: 1991 Toyota Sera

When I saw this next car come into our tips box I thought it might be too soon to post another one...but then I did a quick glace into the archives and found two things; first, it has been almost a month since I posted the last one (where does the time go?) and second, there is no such thing as too much cow bell. Because this is the cow bell of the automotive world and you should not fear the reaper. Those scissors/lambo doors might be totally unnecessary, but they add an essential element to what would otherwise be a plain and lame. Find this 1991 Toyota Sera offered for $5500 in Damascus, OR. A Skosh High: 1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS

This next car has some sticker shock for your cheapskates in the crowd...because ten large for a 32 year old Honda seems a skosh high. But...BUT...this is a mighty clean example of the 3rd generation Prelude that is not only the desirable Si model but it is equipped with desirable options like a manual gearbox, 4-wheel-steering, and dramatic light flares in the photos...THIS is a seller who knows how bring some drama to velour seats. Find this 1988 Honda Prelude Si offered for $10,000 in Annapolis, MD via craigslist. Tip from Vlad. Scion iQ Inside: 1974 Honda Z600

What a way to start a Monday! This next car had my scratching my head for a while. I'm pretty sure there is a bald spot up there now...cause I'm still scratching. Maybe somebody can explain to me how a car like a 2014 Scion iQ ended up being the donor chassis/drivetrain/interior for a '74 Honda Z600. This really looks like one of the first model cars I tried to build with Testors model cement when I was about 8 years old...it looks great on the package but that glue melts everything and the end product is NEVER as good as it looked on the box or in store. I dunno. Somehow the seller's ALLCAPS SHOUTING DESCRIPTION ONLY ADDS TO THE ALLURE. You'll certainly get to say you are the only one on the block with this thing. Find this 1974 Honda Z600 built on a Scion iQ chassis offered for $5950 in Huntington Beach, CA via craigslist. Tip from Mike Jr.Friday, May 15, 2020
Basic Transport: 2006 Saab 9-2X Linear

The Subaru WRX was a suped up version of the standard base Subaru Impreza -- the WRX added a turbocharger and some fun sometime in the 2001 model year. In 2005 Saab got into the all-wheel-drive fun game and launched the 9-2X which was available in WRX-turbo Aero version and in the basic non-turbo Linear model. This next car is the slow and steady non-turbo and slushbox equipped Linear, but the asking price is almost scrap value low. Find this 2006 Saab 9-2X Linear offered for $1800 in Maynard, MA via saabnet.com. Tip from BarbPaddles.Tuesday, May 12, 2020
Great Taste, Less Torque: 2005 Mazda RX-8

They say less is more. But who are they? Does that apply to torque from an internal combustion engine? And have they ever driven a Mazda RX-8? With 232 horsepower the 6-port Renesis has a decent amount of thrust at redline, but with only 159 ft-lbs of torque, this isn't exactly a tractor...but if you like your engines to be piston-free...the RX-8 was the last hurrah for Wankel's legendary rotary and they aren't getting any younger. Find this 2005 Mazda RX-8 offered for $5500 in Santa Clarita, CA via craigslist.Thar She Goes: 1988 Mitsubishi Van LS

I love the classic Mitsubishi Van, even if it does have a Kirk Douglas chin. But Kirk Douglas (God rest his soul) doesn't have a sweet velour interior, reclining/rotating captains chairs OR the ability take you and seven of your co-sheltering family/friends to somewhere you can stand 6-feet apart. What a strange time we live in. But there is nothing strange about wanting to own such a sweet van. Find this 1988 Mitsubishi Van LS offered for $3400 in San Mateo, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!Monday, May 11, 2020
Turbo Flatty: 1983 Mitsubishi Starion

The Mitsubishi Starion/Dodge Conquest/Plymouth Conquest/Chrysler Conquest was a line of 4 cars built in the 80s by Mitsubishi in Japan - rebadged for Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler to confuse everyone. It was the Japanese version of a pony car and combined a turbocharged front engine, manual trans, rear wheel drive and limited slip differentials for classic fun. Contrary to popular belief the name Starion was not an Engrish mispronunciation of Stallion, but it is a contraction of the words Star of Arion -- which was a mythical horse. It would be easy to compare a nice version of the Starion to a Mustang, Camaro, Porsche 944 or RX7 and it is certainly a less common alternative to the other common 2+2s you see around on the road. Find this 1983 Mitsubishi Starion offered for $5500 in Rochester, Monday, May 4, 2020
Tommykaira Tuned: 1995 Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon

If you don't get the appeal for this next car, you've probably never played Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo racing series on Sony Playstation. And that's fine, not everyone will appreciate this car...but for the diehard JDM lover who remembers the feeling of a numb thumb from hours of lapping Trial Mountain Circuit...yeah...you know who you are and you want this bad. Find this 1995 Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon offered for $11999 in Staten Island, NY via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!
