The HiLux is legendary for its rugged chassis and bulletproof R-series engines...that's certainly part of the reason it is the favorite for lawn care workers in the USA and militias around the globe. The 3rd generation (internally called A60) Celica was the final rear-drive chassis to use Toyota's Celica name. The next generation used a transverse front-drive setup that has become a de facto standard for economy cars, but up through 1985 you could get a Celica from the factory with a longintudinal engine and right wheel drive. The A60 generation also added rack-and-pinion steering for the first time and ASC (American Specialty Cars) were nice enough to modify a few of the coupe versions into a decent looking drop top. I've owned and driven some slow cars in my time...so I don't say this lightly...but this next car is slower than a herd of snails on a plate of peanut butter. The basic gasoline powered Sentra was slow with its 1.6 liter gasoline 4-banger drooling to 60mph in about 14 seconds, but the 1.7 liter CD17 non-turbo diesel was an absolute boat anchor and would have possibly gotten to 60 in less than 18 seconds with a strong tail wind. But...if my experience owning an '81 Rabbit Diesel taught me anything...it is that slow can be exhilarating -- just try merging on the freeway and tell me your pulse rate doesn't skyrocket like a snail trying to cross the racing surface during the annual Bonneville salt flat speed week. Most people know the big three Japanese auto manufactures Honda, Nissan and Toyota for their mainstream approach to car design and sales...but Japan has many auto manufacturers for an island that has less than 2% of the world's population. For decades the Nissan Skyline was forbidden fruit over here in the USA -- and it wasn't until they replaced the classic inline-6 with a V6 that it was imported into the USA and then it was called an Infinity G35 (and alternatively Nissan GTR in Godzilla spec) and it was really a disappointment. What a way to start a Monday! This next car had my scratching my head for a while. I'm pretty sure there is a bald spot up there now...cause I'm still scratching. Maybe somebody can explain to me how a car like a 2014 Scion iQ ended up being the donor chassis/drivetrain/interior for a '74 Honda Z600. The Subaru WRX was a suped up version of the standard base Subaru Impreza -- the WRX added a turbocharger and some fun sometime in the 2001 model year. In 2005 Saab got into the all-wheel-drive fun game and launched the 9-2X which was available in WRX-turbo Aero version and in the basic non-turbo Linear model. I love the classic Mitsubishi Van, even if it does have a Kirk Douglas chin. The Mitsubishi Starion/Dodge Conquest/Plymouth Conquest/Chrysler Conquest was a line of 4 cars built in the 80s by Mitsubishi in Japan - rebadged for Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler to confuse everyone. It was the Japanese version of a pony car and combined a turbocharged front engine, manual trans, rear wheel drive and limited slip differentials for classic fun. Contrary to popular belief the name Starion was not an Engrish mispronunciation of Stallion, but it is a contraction of the words Star of Arion -- which was a mythical horse. It would be easy to compare a nice version of the Starion to a Mustang, Camaro, Porsche 944 or RX7 and it is certainly a less common alternative to the other common 2+2s you see around on the road.
