Cheap Rally Machine: 1988 Mazda 323 GTX

This next tip comes from Matt C who writes: Sure, everyone knows about the Subaru WRX and Lancer EVO. The Celica All-Trac bowed out earlier, but it's notorious for one of the most epic cheating methods in motorsports. And some rally fans will remember the Mitsubishi Gallant VR4. But how many remember Mazda's entry? Well, you can take advantage of this obscurity (and a transmission problem) to snag one for under $2000! Find this 1988 Mazda 323 GTX offered for $1999 in Canton, GA via craigslist.

Rally Dreams: 2005 Subaru Forester XT

The Subaru Forester was launched in 2007 as Subaru's first entry into the (then small, now large) segment known as the crossover SUV, but the Forester was a long way away from being an AMC Eagle. A few years later Subaru put a slightly detuned version of their 2.5 liter turbo motor from the legendary Impreza WRX STI and called this new model the Forester XT.  Today, as cheap used cars, they offer an interesting combination of off roadiness, boosted all-wheel-drive fun, and manual gearboxes that'll challenge all takers for a few grand. Find this 2005 Subaru Forester XT offered for $5000 in Atlanta, GA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

AWD Subaru Swapped: 1973 Ford Courier

The worst thing about a 2 wheel drive pickup is that they have no traction in the wet...or maybe that is the best thing about a 2WD pickup (depending on how you drive...but I digress).  The Ford Courier pickup was actually a Mazda B-series that was available over the years with a number of small powerplants, including a Wankel, but today's example has been converted into a boxer-4 powered all-wheel-drive custom.  Find this 1973 Ford Courier offered for $7500 in Salinas, CA via craigslist. Tip from Safety Fast.

Scotto Carcaine? 1987 Audi 4000 Quattro CS Lewis Edition

If you haven't gotten hooked on Hoonigan's YouTube videos yet, it could be for a variety of reasons. Maybe you think the incessant donuts and "scumbag" antics are tiring. Maybe you're not a 16 year old kid, and can see that their target demographic is someone who can't yet legally drive. I have to admit I wasn't the biggest fan of their brand of tomfoolery until I was a guest on the show, with our Black Iron Racing E36 Camper Lemons car...and I got to know these guys a bit... then I kinda got hooked. It has since become evident Hoonigan co-founder Brian Scotto has a thing for 5-cylinder Audis, which is a bit unexpected. Then I stumble across this craigslist ad for what is most likely one of his "someday" vehicles, since the photos are clearly from the Donut Garage parking lot. Check out this 1987 Audi 4000 Quattro CS for sale in Long Beach, CA for $2000 via craigslist.

Killed B: 1983 Audi quattro

"Ur" is German prefix that in one of it's meanings is original, primitive or proto-.  Such as Ur + shrift (document) is Urshrift or original document.  The Audi cognoscenti a few years ago began to refer to the original "small q" quattro of the early 80's as the Ur-quattro.  The Ur-quattro was a ground breaking car that changed the face of rallying, ushering in the all wheel drive revolution. Original quattro values have been ascendant, so here's your chance to pay pennies on the dollar for a significant car that has a few needs.  Find this 1983 Audi quattro for sale in Seattle, WA for $15,000 via craigslist.

Seller Submission: 2004 Volvo V70R

Volvo wagons had always been "cool" to drive around since the 1927 Volvo PV4 hit the streets with a thin diagonal rod holding the "iron mark" emblem in front of the grill.  The PV444 added to that coolness with a modern style wagon and you can't forget the iconic boxy body 145/245/740/940/850 wagons of the past few decades.  You couldn't really call any of them fast....at least not compared to any of their competition.  That all changed with the release of the 2004 model year Volvo V70R that combined a healthy turbocharged 300 horsepower 5-cylinder engine with all-wheel-drive, so you could have your cake and go really fast with it too.  Find this 2004 Volvo V70R offered for $6,500 in Burlingame, CA via craigslist.  Seller submission from Leon.

This next car comes from tipper Safety Fast who writes: Haven't had one of these on the site for a while.  That sounds like a challenge to me, Mr Fast, if that is indeed your real name.  I'll start posting so many DSM classics that you'll think this site should be called Daily Talonismo...but let's start with this 1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD offered for $6,450 in Chico, CA via craigslist.

6-Speed Manual: 2010 Saab 9-3 Aero AWD

The second generation of the Saab 9-3 was produced starting in 2002 and somehow survived the 2008 carpocalypse and made it all the way through 2012 before it was sort-of resuscitated with Chinese and Indian backers for 2013-2014...but that is a story for another time.  Find this 2010 Saab 9-3 Aero AWD offered for $13,000 in SF Bay Area, CA via craigslist.

DSModified: 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD

The Eagle Talon was part of the big three from Diamond Star Motors -- the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser.  Why Dodge decided to saddle the little sporty compacts with the Eagle and Plymouth labels is a mystery that will never been solved, but they are undeniably interesting and impossible to find stock.  Find this 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD offered for $2,850 near Boise, ID via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Off Road: 1989 Toyota Van 4X4

Your Own Beat-up: 1987 Ford Tempo AWD

By Matt -- In the 1980’s, Ford USA was in the process of putting together an FIA Group B rally program to rival the RS2000 project from across the Atlantic. With an all-iron single-turbo 2.8 liter V6, four driven wheels, and a tufted velour front bench, the homologation Tempo was planned for a limited production run of 500. Ford, not able to make the close ratio dog-leg 5 speed transaxle and locking center differential live in rally conditions, abandoned all but the homologation special, with all performance-oriented features deleted except the AWD system. I hope you’ve enjoyed this completely falsified, revisionist history. Find this 1987 Ford Tempo AWD with absolutely no racing pedigree, for sale in Denver, CO for $750.

DT Does WRC: Rally Mexico Trip Report

Early in March 2016 I had the opportunity to travel down to Léon, Guanajuato - a 440 year old Mexican city full of 1.6 million people - for the only North American round of the World Rally Championship. WRC Rally México, as it's officially known, is the first gravel round and the 3rd rally in the WRC season and has been for the past 13 years. I was there for my day job as engineering support for a spec powertrain component to all WRC teams, but wouldn't miss out on reporting the experience via DT - sit back, crack open a Negra Modelo, and enjoy - arriba!

Big Red Wagon: 2007 Volvo V70R

I remember getting my first ride in a V70R that a colleague had picked up new a few years ago.  With 5 "adults" packed into the interior it offered a surprising amount of forward thrust -- not the frenetic immediacy of something like an Evo or STI, but a nice wall of torque and passing power in any gear -- closer in performance to a B5 S4 than the winged rally boys.  When new the V70R cost its owner something near $50k, but 10 years later you can pick one up for a fraction of the original MSRP.  Find this 2007 Volvo V70R here on eBay bidding for $6,200 with 5 days to go. Tip from MB.

WRC Homo: 1990 Toyota Celica All-Trac Turbo

Before you get all fired up (we are talking to you, Stan) - the title is short for homologation. As in, Toyota wanted to build a badass Celica for the World Rally Championship but needed a widebody, all wheel drive, turbocharged production version to be offered to the public in order for it to be legal for competition. Called the GT-Four in the rest of the world, this gravel-munching monster was badged All-Trac Turbo for the US. Find this 1990 Toyota Celica All-Trac Turbo for sale in Nashville, TN for $7,500 via craigslist. Tip from Daniel who says: "If this is legit this this one is in the 1% of good ones left."

One Ogre: 1989 Ford Tempo AWD

By Gianni --  The Ford Tempo / Mercury Topaz was the Jack Telnack designed compact-sized successor to the Ford Fairmont / Mercury Zephyr.   The Tempo / Topaz twins were produced from 1983 to 1994 in both 2 door coupe and 4 door sedan versions.   The twins were mainly wrong wheel drive, however an AWD version was available with selectable AWD and the 2.3 L HSO (High Specific Output) inline 4 producing a magical 100 HP.    With all that going for it, it no wonder that there aren’t more one owner Tempo’s and Topaz’s littering Craigslist or eBay.  Find this formerly one owner 1989 Ford Tempo AWD here on eBay classified ads for $5,990 in Canton, GA by a dealer.
