Today marks the 30th Anniversary of the start of the 1986 Olympus World Championship Rally. The Olympus Rally was run out of Olympia, Washington and marked the end of the Group B era of the WRC and was also the first WRC round in North America since the Press On Regardless Rally in 1974. I was there as a starving college student and took a few pictures with my trusty 35mm film camera.

Big in the rest of the world, but unknown in the U.S. Rallies in Europe have thousands of spectators lining the stages, often camping out overnight to get a good spot. In the U.S., organizers are lucky to have more than 100 spectators on a stage. The homologation-satisfying GTI-R treatment tarted up Nissan's dopey Pulsar with revealing bodywork that left little to the imagination, ATTESA all-wheel drive, and the famous SR20DET. The U.S. never got one, but a few wash up on our shores to fulfill the American dream of hill jumping and mud spraying. The North American Vintage Rally scene consists of mostly TSD (time-speed-distance) and caravan style events (e.g. Targa California) with an emphasis on classic cars. You don't need to have a $50k restored trailer queen to enter most of these events and you'll probably have more fun trying to keep up with your co-participants in a V4 powered Saab then trying to keep your foot off the loud pedal of a '63 Vette.
