5-Speeds 4-Bys: 1984 AMC Eagle Sport

The Eagle was AMC's late '70s answer to the OPEC oil embargo and high gas prices that followed. Sales of traditional pickup trucks and SUVs were down. AMC needed a way to pad their bottom line with more sales of profitable 4WD-equipped vehicles -- so they took a chance with a gussied up version of the  Concorde (formerly the Hornet, which started production in 1969) equipped with a full-time 4WD system, creating the first true crossover and "sport utility wagon" before anybody else.  Find this 1984 AMC Eagle Sport offered for $2,000 in Pollock Pines, CA via craigslist.  Tip from RockOn.

Peak Chrysler: 1992 Eagle Summit DL Wagon

In 1988 Chrysler launched a new marque called Eagle -- which was supposed to sink its hooked talons into the soft underbelly of Japanese car sales and tear up the competition.  It was sort of a competitor to GM's Pontiac division, in that it was aimed at the "sporty" driver, but also at Saturn in that it was aimed at stemming the catastrophic market share losses to the Japanese.  Either way the brand was mostly a collection of badge engineered cars from other Chrysler divisions or captive imports from Mitsubishi...like this next one.  Find this 1992 Eagle Summit DL Wagon here on eBay bidding for $600 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go, located in Woodhaven, NY.  Tip from Adam.

Beware of Gremlin: 1982 AMC Eagle SX/4 Liftback

 In 1979 AMC released a compact 4X4 oddball called the Eagle that was one part answer to the OPEC oil embargo and one part sheer insanity.  4X4s were supposed to be these big, short-wheelbase Jeepy things, or trucks, not a small station wagon shaped thing with optional wood siding!!  AMC had just inadvertently created the world's first crossover vehicle, a market segment that today dominates half the floor at most auto shows.  Find this 1982 AMC Eagle SX/4 offered for $4,000 in Western Massachusetts via craigslist.
