The Grand Velour - '82 AMC Concord Procurement/Road Trip

After giving away my first car - a '74 Javelin - last year, an American Motors sized hole has existed in the fabric of my being. In a separate but to-be-related path, I had also purchased a TKO-500 transmission for an Aussie XE Falcon ute project a couple of months ago from a buddy in Indiana. The problem was that the trans was 800 miles away without a great way to get it home. The idea was this: since it's going to be substantial monies to palletize and ship the trans, why not find a beater to buy, drive home, and sell immediately for a net-zero? The supersonic Concorde was a product of a joint venture between French Aérospatiale and British Aircraft Corp (later known as Airbus) which provided luxury transatlantic passenger flights at half the duration of the typical jumbo jet.  The Concorde offered a vision into the future, with double delta shaped wings, variable ram inlet turbofans, full fly-by-wire controls, aluminum construction, and computer flight control systems.  Two years later, AMC (which was coincidentally forming a joint venture with Renault) released the AMC Concord (sans e, now 1978) -- an upscale compact luxury passenger car that promised technology, sophistication, and speed...but...was really a renamed Hornet and was about as successful as the Concorde in the long run.  Find this 1981 AMC Concord offered for $5,995 buy-it-now here on eBay located in Fountain Hills, AZ with 3 days to go.

 This Concord is not a supersonic passenger jet, but a replacement for the AMC's outgoing compact Hornet and mid-sized Matador.  The Concord was released in 1978 during the height of the domestic downsizing, by the struggling AMC.  It was designed with an emphasis on luxury to lure buyers from the big three and invading Japanese competition.  As the smallest US OEM, AMC had the most to fear from the impending boom of the reliable, efficient and inexpensive Japanese economy car.
