It is extremely difficult to find a rust free Saab 9000 most anywhere in the USA. Saab's first large car has virtually vanished from the pages of craigslist- even in New England. The Alfa Romeo 164, Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma, and 9000 all shared the same type four platform. While the Thema has the cool Ferrari sourced engine and Alfa makes wonderful Busso music, it is the 9000 that seriously moves out. The 2.3 turbo engine is one of the most underrated 4 cylinder engines of all time. They can produce a silly amount of power with moderate modification and reasonable cash outlay. A simple stage 1 ECU tune of the Trionic 5 software turns these cars into highway passing monsters. The one weak spot to be aware of on Aero models was the TCS traction control system. In 2005 General Motors released a Saab badged version of the mid-sized GMT360 SUV platform that shares parts with the Buick Rainier, Chevrolet TrailBlazer & SSR, GMC Envoy, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Isuzu Ascender. The Saab 9-7x version featured some Saabish styling cues, but it was not that exciting until the 2008 model year when Saab released the LS2 powered Aero version (aka the Trollblazer), which was most powerful production "Saab" ever built. The Saab 9000 is definitely one of the easiest, fastest, and cheapest cars to modify that hardly any people know about. Unfortunately, these cars have largely disappeared the road and Saab has gone paws up. A number of 9000 parts are extremely difficult to find or are NLA (no longer available) at this point. The best way to combat this is to have a parts car handy. Today's cars are less than 30 miles from one another and when put together could make a entertaining ride (better that I write this here than try to convince my wife of this...). The cars that were badged with the Griffin of Scania in the 21st century weren't nearly as quirky/funky/stinky as the Saabs of yesteryear, but they were probably better engineered and executed for what its worth. Maybe the additional complexity of electronics with consign them to the scrap bin as Saab 95/96/99s continue to be restored with simple tools, but you have to admit they were far faster and more competent handling things. When Saab released the 9-2x wagon based on a Japanese import, it seemed like a gift from the heavens. You get your funky Scandinavian badge with reliable Japanese powerplant, except that the car was built by Subaru...which means you get a car with plastics that look like they came from a yogurt container factory, and an engine that is powerful, but easily turned into scrap metal with extra boost.
