The Saab 9000 was the final vehicle designed in house at Saab and brought to market by the funky Scandinavian OEM before it was fully acquired by the machine known as General Monster...I mean Motors. The 9000 was built on the Saab/Fiat type 4 platform (1984-1998 Lancia Thema, Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Alfa Romeo 164) and features executive class luxury, front drive safety, and Giorgetto Giugiaro styling...and the best part is that they are cheap and easy to modify to go fast.  Find this 1992 Saab 9000 Turbo offered for $1500 firm (12/28/2017, price reduced) via the grassrootsmotorsports classified forums and here on DT.

This Is The Only Way: Two 1994 Saab 9000 Aeros

The Saab 9000 is definitely one of the easiest, fastest, and cheapest cars to modify that hardly any people know about.  Unfortunately, these cars have largely disappeared the road and Saab has gone paws up.  A number of 9000 parts are extremely difficult to find or are NLA (no longer available) at this point.  The best way to combat this is to have a parts car handy.  Today's cars are less than 30 miles from one another and when put together could make a entertaining ride (better that I write this here than try to convince my wife of this...).  Find this 1994 Saab 9000 Aero parts car and this second 1994 Saab 9000 Aero for sale by two different sellers.  The cars are located in the Northwest CT area for about $2,000 total via craigslist.

Griffen Edition 2-fer- 1992 Saab 9000

There were four hundred Saab 9000 Griffen Editions made in 1992 as a send off for the CD body style.  All 9000's from 1993-1998 were the cavernous CS five door liftback.  You would think it would be pretty hard to find one of these Griffens for sale twenty four years later right?  Here in New England, we actually have two 1992 Saab 9000 Griffens for sale in Meriden, CT for the princely sum of $400 via craigslist.

The Saab 9000 was the last of a long line of Scandinavian engineered front-drive luxury sedans from the internal madmen at Saab, designed before it was swallowed up by the General Monster.  It was the product of a joint project between Saab and Fiat called the Type Four platform, and in production was the Lancia Thema, Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Alfa Romeo 164.  But only the Saab offered Giorgetto Giugiaro styling, a turbocharged engine, body kit, Recaro seats, sport suspension and 16-inch wheels.  Find this 1996 Saab 9000 Aero offered for $4,000 in Denver, CO via craigslist.  Tip from Zach Z.

The Saab 9000 was the final vehicle designed in house at Saab and brought to market by the funky Scandinavian OEM before it was flushed down the toilet by penny pinching bozos at GM.  The major problem with the post GM Saab era vehicles wasn't that they were less reliable (in truth they were probably better cars) but that they had lost the essential Saabness and GM's corporate overlords were so busy patting themselves on the back that they forgot to figure out if Saab was going to compete with BMW, Bugatti or a Bangladeshi rickshaw manufacturer. The Saab 9000 was the final vehicle designed in house at Saab and brought to market by the funky Scandinavian OEM before it was fully acquired by the monstrous machine known as General Motors. GM took a 50% share in Saab in 1989, subsequently forced GM global platform based garbage into lineup by 1994, exercised its option to acquire 100% of Saab rights in 2000, and within the decade had run the 65 year old automotive spin-off of Svenska Aeroplan AB into the toilet.  This outcome shocked absolutely no one.  The biggest problem with the post GM Saab era vehicles wasn't that they were less reliable (in truth they were probably better cars) but that they had lost the essential Saabness and GM's corporate bean counters were so busy patting themselves on the back that they forgot to figure out if Saab was going to compete with BMW, Bugatti or a Bangladeshi rickshaw manufacturer.  There was a time when Saab had a game plan and it included building cars like the 9000 that had final gear acceleration from 50-70 mph faster than a Carrera 4 or Testarossa, and selling those cars to wacky professor types who just wanted something different.  Find this 1993 Saab 9000 Aero offered for $2,300 in Northwest Arkansas via craigslist.  Tip from Mike G.

5k: Better Than A Thema: 1995 Saab 9000 Aero

As much as it pains me to say it, you should forget about picking up this Lancia Thema 8.32 located in Canada with a busted engine. Sure, it is powered by a Ferrari V8 taken from the 308/Mondial, is 25 years young and ready for import... but if you really want a car based on the join Saab/Fiat type 4 platform (1984-1998 Lancia Thema, Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Alfa Romeo 164) just pickup a used Saab 9000 already.  The 9000 features the same executive class luxury, front drive safety, and Giorgetto Giugiaro styling...but..critically, a new engine is a trip to the local junkyard and a few Benjamins instead of a trip to Luigi's House of Italian Cars and Mafioso Collections Dept and a new mortgage on your house.  Here is a great example -- this 1995 Saab 9000 Aero currently bidding for $3,050 on ebay reserve-not-met with 3 days to go, located in Maywood, NJ.
