When Honda introduced its two seater CRX version of the popular Civic platform, it wasn't the fastest car, it wasn't the best handling, or the best looking --but it provided an unmatched combination of reliability, tossability, and fun for a price that was hard to beat.  If you asked me to name the CRXs competition in 1989, I'd have a hard time naming anything -- Ford's EXP?  The Mercury LN7? Cadillac Allante? In 1987 Road and Track tested Honda's new Prelude 2.0Si and found that it outperformed every other car (included Ferrari 328, Porsche 911, C4 Corvette) that year on the 700-ft slalom with a speed of 65.5 mph.  How could a front-wheel-drive Japanese sports coupe out slalom all of the the wide/sticky tire equipped competition? 1999-2000 Civic Si coupes ("EM1" in JDM-tyte parlance) will one day cross the auction block as the Porsche 993 of Civics. These are the last of the golden era. A time when a low-displacement four-cylinder revved like a Ducati, sounded like an irritated weed-whacker, and inspired a million catchphrases. It was an honest car stolen or molested by dishonest people, and whose image was marred by pretentious loudmouths. 5k: Not Just Another White Shoebox: 1989 Honda Civic Si

Before the Honda Civic became another Corolla/HyundaiKia competitor, it was really something special. The combination of thin 22-gauge sheetmetal, light and rev-happy 4-cylinder engines, the slickest shifting manual transmissions in the business and pure chassis dynamics made for an entertaining, useful and affordable option that millions of consumers found very hard to turn down. The EF and EG Civic Sis from the late '80s / early '90s were some of the best; sadly, they have mostly been "riced" into oblivion by now and either A) have been crushed and recycled into Taiwanese washing machines, B) have been modified at a cost well past their value, or C) are still stock, but priced like Faberge eggs because of their rareness. One of our readers has managed to find a 1989 Civic Si that fits nonexistent option D: it's still mostly stock, intact, one color, and...can still be used as reasonably priced yet fun transportation!
