B18 Swapped: 1988 Honda CRX

The Honda CRX was an interesting two-seat front-drive economy sports car that really shook up the market when it was introduced in 1983.  There were few other cars on the road that could be optioned to get 40mpg city/50mpg highway (in the CRX HF) or provide an exhilarating driving experience (CRX Si).  Today's example has the volume turned up to 11 with a "teggy" swap...which is the B18 non-VTEC equipped 4-banger from a '95 Integra good for around 140 horsepower.  While we'd prefer the zippy VTEC zoom factor of a B18C, this thing is a considerable torque upgrade from the original and should be very lively.  Find this 1988 Honda CRX offered for $3700 in San Jose, CA via craigslist. Car Really eXplain High Falutin: 1988 Honda CRX HF

There are a few key things that I like about this next ride.  FIRST, is the color.  I'm a sucker for bronze/copper/gold paint that doesn't look like something aftermarket rattle can job...and this looks appropriately bronze without the brassy tones you'd expect from a bad dye job.  NEXT, the price is reasonable. And finally, those two little letters HF means high fuel economy (42mpg city, 50 mpg hwy) which wasn't achieved through hybridization but through weight loss and incredible gear ratios. Find this 1988 Honda CRX HF offered for $2,800 in Long Beach, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Rare Survivor: 1987 Honda CRX

On the top of my list of cars that we almost never find in un-modified and original trim is Honda's fabulous CRX sports coupe. Find this 1987 Honda CRX here on eBay bidding for $4,050 with a few hours to go, located in La Mirada, CA.

DT 5.0 Best 5K Cars

Cars costing five grand are the life blood of DT.  It is a dicey price point that can lead to any number of potential outcomes: a slightly better than beater, money pit, the nickel and dimer, or the diamond in the rough .  Craigslist searching skills, hard negotiating, and knowledge of a marque all go a long way to deciding your fate on a car for five stacks.  Here is a pretty diverse list of gems in this arena.  This post is part of DT's 5th Birthday Celebration.

Insert Engine Here: 1988 Honda CRX Si

Normally a car being advertised without a engine and transmission would be not be anything to jump up and down about.  However, the Honda's two seater CRX practically begs for a more modern power plant so today's example has saved you a lot of man hours in removal time.  Honda's alphabet soup of four cylinder engines leave the next owner more options than you can shake a stick at. The stock Si engine was plenty capable in its day, but technology has moved the performance yardstick considerably forward in the last thirty years.  Find this 1988 Honda Civic roller for sale in Newburgh, NY for $1,900 via craigslist.

Smiles Per Gallon: 1991 Honda CRX HF

It is truly remarkable how a 62 horsepower car that does 0-60 in about 14 seconds Dodge Demon got me all misty eyed searching for victims to write about.  The fuel sipping CRX HF 40 city mpg and 47 highway mpg ratings are impressive to this day.  The most difficult part of owning this car may be trying to source a set of new 165/70/13 tires.  The second generation CRX holds a special place in the hearts of many a car enthusiast who graduated high school in and around 1991.  The Si models were the ones to own back in the day, but finding any unmodified and unrusted version today is no small task.  Honda has too many powerful 4 cylinder engines to count that could be swapped into this 1900 lb HF to up the fun factor.  Find this 1991 Honda CRX HF for sale in Naugatuck, CT for $5,000 via craigslist.

Too Nice to Rice: 1989 Honda CRX

The Fast and Furious franchise is in its eighth instalment now, serving as a blight on petrolheads and movie-goers alike since 2001. However, the franchise has victimised more than just people; it's wrought some of the worse crimes against cars seen in the last few decades. An un-riced Honda CRX is like a satisfying high school reunion: rare, and distinctly 80s. Find this 1989 Honda CRX for sale in Yagoona, NSW, Australia for $6,000 AUD ($4,500 USD at the time of writing) via gumtree.com.

Seller Submission: 1984 Honda CRX

When Honda introduced their 2-seat sporty version of the Civic in 1984, it was really in a class by itself. It provided an unmatched combination of reliability, tossability, and fun for a price that was hard to beat...which is still the case today, except that you can add low long term costs and extreme frugality to the top of the list.  Find this 1984 Honda CRX offered for $3,500 in Wrentham, MA via craigslist.  Seller submission from Zo,

Half Full: 1988 Honda CRX HF

The economy swings up and down as measured by various indexes and it needs to, because how else will the billionaires make more billions if the market was stagnant and just slowly growing....this is Market 101 here folks, nothing you shouldn't have learned at prep school.  Anyway, as the market swings up and down, so does the price of gasoline...and consequently so does the price of fuel sipping used cars.  A few years ago when gas was $5/gallon, you could sell a 2 year old Prius for more than MSRP, but today fuel prices are low so now is the best time to pick up some oddball classic from the 80s that gets great mileage.  Find this 1988 Honda CRX HF offered for $2,900 in Seattle, WA via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

A European Import? 1986 Honda CRX

by Brian -- Back in the early to mid 1980’s many Japanese car brands were on the rise in quality and performance, leaving behind their humble beginnings. This CRX represents early beginnings in the rise of the imports. This European CRX is of the Left hand drive variety, with many key details that we in America all crave. The exterior and interior of this CRX present well with a clean, and tidy appearance. The seller has pointed out that this CRX is unmodified and retains its original engine and transmission. The only low spot is the minor rust issue with the sunroof panel, which is a fairly common issue with these cars. Find this 1986 Honda CRX currently offered for $3,300 USD here on eBay in Savannah Ga.

Stock Sigh: 1989 Honda CRX Si

When Honda introduced its two seater CRX version of the popular Civic platform, it wasn't the fastest car, it wasn't the best handling, or the best looking --but it provided an unmatched combination of reliability, tossability, and fun for a price that was hard to beat.  If you asked me to name the CRXs competition in 1989, I'd have a hard time naming anything -- Ford's EXP?  The Mercury LN7? Cadillac Allante? Maybe Toyota's MR2 or the Pontiac Fiero, but both of those cars were "exotic" mid engined rear-drive things and the CRX maintained the front-front configuration of the Civic.  Find this 1989 Honda CRX Si here on eBay bidding for $5,600 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go, located in Lebanon, NJ.

Couldn't Really eXplain: 1990 Honda CRX

The CRX was a 2-seat lightweight sports coupe based on Honda's popular Civic platform, and finding an unmodified example is as hard as finding someone without a tattoo at a Kid Rock concert.  So if you find one that ONLY has a JDM engine swap and is riding on stock wheels at stock height...well...it's an accomplishment of some kind...sort of like finding someone who only has a dragon tattoo on his/her back.  Find this 1990 Honda CRX offered for $3,500 in Leominster (LEM-É™n-stÉ™r), MA via craigslist. Tip from Jdah.

Happy Birthday Honda: The 5 Best Used Hondas

Exactly 66 years ago on today (Sept 24th, 1948) the Honda Motor Corp was incorporated in Japan by Soichiro Honda.  Honda started out making a motorized bicycle (nicknamed the Bata Bata for its engine sound) using surplus Tohatsu 2-stroke engines from radio generators, but they soon ran out of the engines and started making their own.  It was from these humble beginnings, and only three years after multiple atomic bombs and uncountable quantities of conventional weapons had reduced the Land of the Rising Sun to shambles, that Honda in his 170 square foot workshack launched a commercial empire.  Today, we are happy to produce a short segment on the best cars to ever be born from Dreams.

0k: Beware The Idles of March: 1991 Honda CRX HF

Beware the non-idling cars of March, celebrated today on the ides of March.  Picking up a car that doesn't run isn't simply a risk associated with the cost of the engine that you need to sort/fix/rebuild.  It also means that you can't test the transmission, brakes, suspension, steering and often a car with a busted engine will need every other wear component replaced as well.  Suddenly, your good deal becomes a money pit and you are spending all your weekends fixing stuff.  The ides of March may come, but until that engine runs, they have not yet gone.  Find this 1991 Honda CRX HF currently bidding for $600 with 1 day to go in Elizabethton, TN via ebay.

5k: Front Drive Fun? 1987 Honda CRX Si

It is really ashame that the modern remake (CRZ) offers neither frugal fuel sipping or fun driving, but picking up a used CRX is easy and the wiser choice.  Find this 1987 Honda CRX Si for sale in Chandler, AZ currently bidding for $5,000 with a few hours to go via ebay.
