Pininfarina Legacy for Pennies: 1991 Alfa Romeo 164

The Alfa Romeo 164 was designed by Enrico Fumia (designer of Grifo D'Oro Bertone, Siata Spring, Ferrari F90 & Lancia Ypsilon) when he worked at design house Pininfarina. The angular design was part of the Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Saab cooperative agreement to develop the Type Four platform, which produced the Lancia Thema, Saab 9000, Fiat Croma and Alfa Romeo 164.  They are a cool sight on the road today -- equally stunning and stealthy, and I'd love to daily drive one if I didn't actually need to get to work each day. Is it a good sign or a bad sign when someone sells his entire fleet of cars? Alfa Romeo Jigsaw Puzzle- Two Milano's and 164

Getting old is a bitch and having too many needy Alfa Romeo's can put a real damper on one's golden years.  Today's seller has a trio of Alfa's that are all interdependent on one another to make one decent ride.  The 3.0 Milano Verde is the most valuable car of the of the bunch and would be the recipient of parts from a Milano Platinum and 164 engine donor.  Parts cars are always the most cost efficient way to restore cars on the cheap, but the issue here is transporting all of these cars home which will likely limits buyers to New England area only.  Find these three V6 Alfa Romeo's for sale in Gorham, ME for $1,500 via craigslist.

Low Miles AutoBox: 1994 Alfa Romeo 164

Nineteen Ninety-four was a good year for cars. Volvo's 164 was the long luxurious take on their venerable brick formula - they took the 144 sedan, extended the wheelbase forward of the firewall to fit a few more cylinders, and added a stately Rolls Royce-esque front styling treatment to match the upmarket engine. It may not have the panache (or power) of an aristocratic Brit, but I say it's one of the best looking old boxy Swedes. In 1968 Volvo introduced the 164 as a 1969 model for the upper tier luxury market.  The 164 was aimed squarely at the likes of Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and BMW -- and it even looks a bit like a W115 in the front if you squint. 2k: An Alfa Story: 1991 Alfa Romeo 164

Sometimes you find a story and other times the story finds you.  This is one of the latter, with a story finding us, or more accurately being spammed into DT's tips inbox.  It started so innocently enough back in early February when DT's resident logo guru Kaibeezy sent us a simple tip for an Alfa 164--  $3400. Didn't someone just comment best car ever?  The comment was from Christopher T. Mahoney who says the 164 is a fabulous European sports car for a reasonable price,  but the car was a green Alfa Romeo 164 with manual transmission and an ad skimpy in details.  Of course I dismissed it as overpriced rubbish and went on to find some kind of customized El Camonster, CFlo headed to his favorite Volvo site, and Hunsbloger did some more TauruSable wagon market research.  But, like a persistent case of the clap, that Alfa just wouldn't go away and Kaibeezy had the itch.

It's no secret that DT loves us some vintage Volvos, but to date we haven't featured a 164. The Volvo 164 was the Swedes' upper tier luxury market car sold from 1969 through 1975, and was sort of a great uncle to the ubiquitous 240. It shared 3/4 of the body shell (from the firewall back) with the 140 series, which eventually morphed into the 240 that refused to die until 1993. But the 164 was a bigger classier car aimed at the likes of Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Today they are largely overlooked by enthusiasts and collectors and can be picked up for a song. Exhibit A: this 1970 model now bidding on ebay in Chadron, Nebraska for only $1450 at time of writing, reserve met with two days to go.
