Hot Swede: 1991 Saab 900 SPG

Backing packing through Scandinavia is easy on the eyes.  Sweden in particular offers stunning scenery, architecture...and skönhet in the fairer sex.  It also produced some of the most reliable and practical cars on the planet.  What happens when you take one of these cars and transform it in to a hot hatch?  Find this 1991 Saab 900 SPG for sale in Minneapolis, MN for $5,500 via craigslist.

The 900 series was a massive success for Saab.  A stablemate for life, these were a best seller and have a cult-like following today.  Other than a few prototypes in 1984, The AERO Sports PackaGe edition (SPG) was first widely available to the public in 1985 and ceased production in 1991.  Slowly gaining collectible status, AERO/SPG models are increasingly harder to find.

This example is from the last year of production and sporting the Beryl Green paint scheme.  Only 109 SPG's were ever built using this color.  By 1991, all SPG's were equipped with a 175 HP turbocharger 4-cylinder engine.

Interiors were known for comfortable seating and ergonomics.  Leather was the standard for this top-of-the-line model in 1991.  This example shows some wear in accordance to the claimed mileage.

With a limited production run and the demise of Saab, there is a good chance these cars are destined to be garage queens in the future.  This example looks well preserved overall given it's 25 year age.   Final production year and unique color add up to a collectible Swedish hot hatch that could be enjoyed for years to come with little to no down side.  The seller posted $5500 in the ad title but quotes $6200 in the details...due diligence would be in order.
