Turbo Nord- 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT

The Type 116 Alfa Romeos broke new ground when introduced with the new transaxle layout.  The clutch and transmission were housed at the rear of the car with the differential for better balanced weight distribution.   The Italian cancer (rust) has done in many of these cars by 2018.  Today's example is very far from a beauty queen, but it has a very note worthy period turbo kit installed.  Jafco and Shankle made bolt on turbo kits for the 2.0 Nord engine back in the 1980's, but the one in this car is different than either of those.  No amount of internet sleuthing could help me figure out who produced this particular kit.  Find this 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT for sale in New Milford, CT for $6,500 via craigslist.

Little Alfa: 1977 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0

Chances are I will never own an Italian car, and I'm not really sure my grass roots mechanical abilities would afford me the skill to maintain such a beast.  If I did consider wading into the world of Rosso Corsa, I would want to cut my teeth on something less recognizable and forgiving of my mechanical malaise. Thursday Twister: Automotive Alliteration

Welcome to another edition of the  Thursday Twister, DT's favorite guessing game where we take a break from the serious, edgy, and groundbreaking stuff we regularly post.  Today the game is simple, no strange/rare car features to find, just a simple search for the best car names that use alliteration. 

10k: GTV6 Powered: 1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta (tipo 116) was released in 1972 as a replacement for the Giulia based 1750 Berlina, even though a slightly larger sedan with the Berlina name (the 2000) was produced concurrently with the Alfetta.  Although Giuseppe Scarnati designed the original Giulia sedan, and the 1750 Berlina was a Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone design, the Alfetta fell back into Scarnati's lap and he created something much more modern looking that bares a strikingly resemblance to the E12 BMW 5-series.  TL;DR version: A bunch of Italian guys designed some cars.  Find this 1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta with GTV6 power offered for $9,700 in Kenmore, WA via craigslist.  Tip from Gianni

2k: Meatball on Calzone: 1976 Alf Romeo Alfetta Sedan

 The 116 series Alfettas were the replacements to Alfa Romeo's long running 105/115 series Berlina and GTV.  Alfa built prototype Spiders based on the 116 series platform, but the Spider carried on with the 105/115 series platform until 1992.  The Alfetta's use of a de Deion rear suspension and transaxle harked back to the 1950’s Alfetta Grand Prix racers, hence the use of the storied name.  They were sold in the US as the Alfetta Sedan and Alfetta GT until 1977, when badges were changed to Sport Sedan and Sprint Veloce, since Americans seemed to think Alfetta meant “little Alfa”. Alfettas don’t get much love from the Alfisti and this ’76 Sedan is no exception.  Find this 1976 Alfetta Sedan on Craigslist in Central LA for $2,600.  Words and tip from DT reader Gianni.

5k: Bulk Savings: 1976-1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT Collection

 The Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT/GTV is often simply called the GTV6 because later versions were powered by a front mounted V6, but the early GT/GTV examples used inline-4 power borrowed from the original tipo 105/115 GTV.  Owners of these cars will heap praises on the communicative chassis while admitting that build quality wasn't exactly perfect.  They aren't quite as gorgeous as the earlier cars, but they offer a fantastic fun-to-lira ratio and are often found in clusters, like Honey Bunches of Oats or women heading to the powder room.  Find this 1976-1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT Collection of 4 cars offered for something in the $5000 range (is that one or more cars?) via craigslist, located in Seattle, WA.  Tip from Rottenland.

 The Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT (& GTV6 coupe) was a 2-door Giorgetto Giugiaro penned version of the  Giuseppe Scarnati Alfetta Sedan (Type 116).  The GT version went from 4-cylinder power to a standard V6 in 1981 and the name GTV6 has sort of stuck with that coupe body style.  The last GTV6 we featured was offered for $12,500 and folks in the comments called it a crack-pipe price, perhaps they will be nicer to this 1/2 price example?  Find this 1985 Alfa Romeo GTV6 offered for $6,500 in Pomona, CA via craigslist.

This was the car that Ferris Bueller's friend Cameron called a piece of crap in John Hughes's 1986 epic Ferris Bueller's Day Off.  It is the kind of car driven by the kids of wealthy Ferrari GTO owners back in the day, but few have survived to be seen on the street now.  Find this 1979 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sport Sedan offered for $24,900 buy-it-now on ebay, located in Syosset, NY.

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta coupe was a front engine rear-transaxle equipped fastback built in Milan from 1972-1987.  The Alfetta replaced the successful and gorgeous GTV, big shoes to fill for the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed coupe.  The Alfetta will never be as collectible and cool as its Giulietta predecessor, but today's values are depressed and the time for picking one up couldn't be better.
