We listed a Porsche 914 the other day and it generated to some discussion around these being a decent drive for the asking price...but the 1.7 liter engine isn't the favorite and most would prefer an upgrade to the 2.0.  Naturally, we were thrilled when tipper Rod sent us in this next car, which does have a salvage title, but seems more car for the asking price. Little Alfa: 1977 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0

Chances are I will never own an Italian car, and I'm not really sure my grass roots mechanical abilities would afford me the skill to maintain such a beast.  If I did consider wading into the world of Rosso Corsa, I would want to cut my teeth on something less recognizable and forgiving of my mechanical malaise. The Porsche 914 offers a superb driving experience for a fair price, but only if you choose wisely.  Like any classic, it pays to pickup a nice version instead of a junker that needs big bucks in rebuild parts, but there are also a few models of 914s you might want to avoid.  First is the 914-6, which is a great car to drive, but way too expensive for the average man, and the early 1.7 and 1.8 liter cars are just too slow.  The best 914 for a fun to cost ratio is clearly the 914 2.0 that was sold from 1973-1976.  Find this 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 here on eBay currently bidding for $12,100 with 2 days to go, located in Winter Garden, FL.

The Porsche 914 was created from a collaboration between Porsche and VW to replace Porsche's 912 and VW's Karmann Ghia respectively. The design was finalized as a targa top two-seater, but what if Porsche had decided to create a converible/speedster version? The Porsche 914 was a sporty two seater born from a collaboration between Porsche and VW.  Today, the 914 is an affordable classic that lacks straight line speed, but certainly doesn't lack fun.  The early 1.7 and 1.8 liter engines are a bit light power, but the later 2.0 liter engine almost matches the performance of the 914/6 and can be had in nice condition for cheap.  Find this 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 for sale in Phoenix, AZ for $5,000 via craigslist.
