Sem Potência 2: 1973 Volkswagen SP2

Up until the 1990s Brazil (the world's fifth largest country by population and geography) did not allow imported automobiles -- and as a result, major OEMs around the world set up local manufacturing centers.  In the beginning, the local plants built vehicles designed and engineered from the parent company's home country, but eventually the locals starting building unique vehicles, particularly Volkswagen of Brazil. The SP2 was built on the Type 3 chassis from 1972 through 1976, during which time VW do Brasil assembled about 10,000 of the sporty looking coupes.  The lack of sales was blamed on the poor performance of the steel bodied SP2 and the nickname Sem Potência (Portuguese for without power) became common.  This next one looks good at first glance...but the seller mentions something about "full rust beyond layers and layers of bondo" ...errrr...tread carefully. Find this 1973 Volkswagen SP2 offered for $10,000 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tip from Rock On!

The Real Luftgekühlt: 1958 King Midget III

The King Midget is not a child's toy that someone sneaked past the dimwits at their local DMV, but a micro car that traces it roots all the way back to 1946.  The initial versions were kit cars offering the unbeatable value of a 500 lb car for $500, but later the guys at the Midget Motors Corp offered fully assembled King Midgets...which is a strange name for a car powered by a single cylinder aircooled Wisconsin motor that pushed out 9.2 horsepower into a 2-speed...royal indeed. Find this 1958 King Midget offered for $11,500 in Northwest CT via craigslist. Tip from Cory.

Aircooled Fastback: 1969 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback

The Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback was sold from 1961 through 1973 in three distinct configurations, the notchback (looks coupish), the squareback (a wagon thing), and the fastback...which is what we have here today. Power comes from Volkswagen's 1600 cc version of the aircooled  flat-4 that was fuel injected starting in 1968. Find this 1969 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback offered for $6,500 in La Habra, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Black and Tan: 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

We listed a Porsche 914 the other day and it generated to some discussion around these being a decent drive for the asking price...but the 1.7 liter engine isn't the favorite and most would prefer an upgrade to the 2.0.  Naturally, we were thrilled when tipper Rod sent us in this next car, which does have a salvage title, but seems more car for the asking price. Find this 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 offered for $7,495 here on eBay buy-it-now located in Torrance, CA.

Not Another Beetle: 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14

In 1955 Volkswagen introduced the Type 14 that was built as a 2+2 coupe and convertible using mechanical components were borrowed from the Type 1 Beetle with styling by Luigi Segre of carrozzeria Ghia and coach-built bodywork from Karmann...hence the name Karmann Ghia.  Today the Ghia offers an interesting alternative to a common Type 1 Beetle and prices aren't that bad. Find this 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 offered for $8000 in Zionville, NC. Tip from Rock On!

French Connection: 1956 Renault 4CV

I've got to be honest with you guys today and admit that I'm really not an expert on the Renault 4CV market -- and the going rate for one of the surviving examples of the million 4CVs produced from 1947 through 1961 is beyond my limited understanding...but...this next car just feels like a good deal compared to the other rear-engined aircooled crap littering the internet auction sites. Find this 1956 Renault 4CV offered for $11,500 in San Diego, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Custom Interior: 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa

When it was first released in 1960, Sports Car Illustrated called the Chevrolet Corvair “the most profoundly revolutionary car … ever offered by a major manufacturer.” The second generation Corvair offered from 1965-1969 was both the evolution and the swan-song for GM’s domestically produced answer to the onslaught of imports.  For a brief moment, there was a Corvair for just about every garage, as it was offered as a two door, four door, station wagon, pickup and convertible.  Find this 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa here on eBay bidding for $8,100 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go, located in Florence, AZ.

Trumped Up: 1989 Tatra 613

I'm sure it is only a coincidence with the new administration in the White House, but I've noticed a recent uptick in the number of cars being offered from ex-Soviet bloc members on USA ebay.  Most of the Volgas and Gazs are just not interesting enough to get my attention (many are some kind of Fiat), but a rear engined aircooled V8 fastbackish 4-door?  Da, now I'm interested.  Find this 1989 Tatra 613 here on eBay bidding for $6,700 with 5 days to go, located in Cherry Hill, NJ.

5k: You Want Fries With That? 1962 DKW Junior de Luxe

You might expect something called the DKW Junior Deluxe to come from an establishment that uses a pedophile clown, slutty heiress or creepy wax statue monarch for a spokesman, but the Junior Deluxe was an automobile built from 1959 to 1965 by Auto Union AG.  It is also one of the most unconventional 60's cars you will ever find that will have Saab 96 owners scratching their heads in confusion.  Find this 1962 DKW Junior de Luxe currently bidding for $9,500 with less than one day to go (zero bids), located in Spain.

5k: Rare Because It's Stock: 1968 VW Type III Squareback

Last time we featured VW's little 2-door wagon from the '60s, the Type III Squareback, it was this "special" El Caminoized custom. Today let's take a gander at the opposite end of the spectrum with a slightly scruffy but completely stock and original example of this attempt by VW to break into the automotive mainstream. Find this 1968 Volkswagen Type III Squareback for sale in Berkeley, CA for an even $5,000 via craigslist. Tip from fueltruck605 via craigslist robot.

5k: DT's Own 1966 Volkswagen Beetle

From Dec. 7, 2013: It is with a heavy heart, but a pragmatic frame of mind that this editor (CFlo) writes a DT feature for his own first car. This was the car I drove to high school, the car I awkwardly picked up girls in for first (and last) dates, the car I did my first burnout in, and the very vehicle that taught me about lift-throttle oversteer. From this car I learned basic mechanical skills and it's partially to blame for me becoming a full-fledged gearhead and my decision to pursue a career in mechanical engineering which I am still enjoying to this day - in addition to moonlighting for DT! This 1966 Beetle has been called many things, not the least of which was "Buster" as named by my younger brother. But after 14 years, now it's time for someone else to call it their own. Find my 1966 Volkswagen Beetle for sale right here on Daily Turismo, located in or around Torrance, CA for $5500

Update Dec. 20, 2013: I've lowered my asking price to $4650.

Update Jan. 20, 2013: Lowered price again to $4200. Willing to negotiate; this car needs a new home!

The car is no longer for sale; editor CFlo has decided to keep the Beetle and recommission it as his daily driver.

10k: UPDATE: Pancake 6 With Extra Syrup: 1965 Corvair Corsa Turbo Convertible

Updated: Dec. 31, 2013  Well, it looks like this Corvair we  posted in October will be starting 2014 with a new owner. We found this youtube video which includes a segment of the car being driven, while cruising for more Corvair bargains.  Turns out the car is probably even nicer than we expected, making it an extremely good buy.  The purchaser even knows his vehicles well enough to know when to get a dig in on Corvette owners!

Original post:
The used car market is a fickle wench, but every now and again she swings our way.  Just as we're watching the Sunbeam Tigers and pristine VW vans accelerate out of the DT price ranges at an amazing pace, we're also seeing the market's bright lights shine on the formerly lowly Corvairs.  Recent ebay sales have been at a higher price and a brisk pace for all manner of Nader-mobiles, but focused on high color or freshly restored 1965-1969 models.  Find this 1965 Corvair Corsa Turbo Convertible for sale in Santa Cruz, CA for $9,000 via craigslist. Tip from our maestro carfindologist Kaibeezy.

20k: Yellow Jacket: 1970 Porsche 911T

Welcome to another edition of Daily Turismo Omologato (DTO), where we showcase cars that are above the standard DT price range, but are unique and worthy of a few words.  The classic (1965-73) small bumper Porsche 911 is one of those cars that seem to have gotten away from the average working man driver.  Porsche built a fair number of their rear-engined runabouts, but modern market mechanisms (especially restomod conversions from specialty aftermarket shops like Singer) have driven prices sky high.  So, while some DT readers will think "hey, I can buy 10 of XYZ car for the same price" others will say "that is half off the normal rip-off price" and a big fight will break out in the comments.  Just wait until I'm done getting my popcorn ready.  Find this 1970 Porsche 911T for sale in Palo Alto, CA for $22,500 via craigslist.  Tip from Stigroy.

20k: Vainity Vair & Hot Air: 1966 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa Turbo Convertible

10k: Three Wheels Of Fun: 1992 Citroën 2CV Lomax 223

The 2CV, known colloquially as the deux chevaux (two horses), was a Toute Petite Voiture (compact) designed in the '30s by the French automaker Citroën.  In 1938 there was this war, with Nazis, tanks, occupation, all kinds of horrible stuff, and post-war France regressed into what they called the Grey Years as most of the pre-war cars had been destroyed or militarized or both. The devastated French population, now under a post-war French-Socialist government (1944) regressed to an earlier style of transportation, with horse drawn carriages and government dictated resource rationing further delayed the production of the 2CV.  Finally, in 1948, 2CV production started in earnest and didn't stop until 1990.  Find this 1992 Citroën 2CV Lomax 223 for sale in Aspiran, France for $15,000 or best offer via ebay.
