As a non-Porsche owner, it has been painful to watch the rise in prices of vintage aircooled P-cars...but I've been watching the prices of the 996/997 and they offer a shocking amount of performance and comfort (sorry 993 owners...but they are faster and more comfy...maybe not as cool...) for the cash.  To be honest, I'm thinking I need to trade the BMW I've been driving for one of these German rear-engine equipped machines...I'd better do it before they become unobtanium. Flat-6 Club: 1993 Subaru Impreza w/ Legacy 6-Cyl

The list of commonly available flat-6 automobile engines goes something like this: 1900 Wilson-Pilcher thing, '48 Tucker, Corvair, Porsche 911, Subaru XT6/SVX/Legacy. That's it.  No Italian or British cars have ever been flat-6'd and American's abandoned the concept after the death of the Corvair. A Bright Star: 1989 Subaru XT6

There is a certain niche in late model classics cars that aren't particularly fast or engaging to drive, but they are interesting nonetheless.  Think Audi Quattro, Ford EXP, Cadillac Allante, Chevrolet Fiero...but one of my favorites (from an aesthetic point of view) has got to be Subaru's XT/XT6 which was a predecessor to the Subaru SVX and went by the name Alcyone in Japan. Black Sheep: 1994 Subaru SVX LSi

You know what, I don't care your what people will think of me after I say this...but I like the Subaru SVX.  It is easy for a car enthusiast to profess his love of cars of legend, who doesn't love an NSX, Testarossa, 911 -- and easier still to claim you don't like certain overly-popular cars like the E30 M3, Countach, 911...but it is difficult to admit you like the cars where the concept was awesome and the execution was meh.  These are the cars that magazines raved about at press release, a few were snapped up, but buyer enthusiasm dropped off soon after. If you are a regular DT reader, you've probably noticed that we've featured many examples of the 2nd generation Corvair (1965-1969), but only a handful of the first gen (1960-1964). It isn't just that we like the crisp styling of the later cars versus the roly-poly 50s look of the earlier cars, but the added benefits of more power and a properly sophisticated independent rear suspension fixed the handling woes of the early cars.  However, that doesn't mean we don't appreciate that the early cars can be a good simple driver or a completely bonkers custom...like this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair currently bidding for $8,200 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go on ebay, located in Upland, CA.

Welcome to another edition of Daily Turismo Omologato (DTO), where we showcase cars that are above the standard DT price range, but are unique and worthy of a few words.  The classic (1965-73) small bumper Porsche 911 is one of those cars that seem to have gotten away from the average working man driver.  Porsche built a fair number of their rear-engined runabouts, but modern market mechanisms (especially restomod conversions from specialty aftermarket shops like Singer) have driven prices sky high.  So, while some DT readers will think "hey, I can buy 10 of XYZ car for the same price" others will say "that is half off the normal rip-off price" and a big fight will break out in the comments.  Just wait until I'm done getting my popcorn ready.  Find this 1970 Porsche 911T for sale in Palo Alto, CA for $22,500 via craigslist.  Tip from Stigroy.

The Porsche 911 gets a lot of grief from the bloggers on this site because prices have escalated from the medium highs of the Richard Pryor golden era to a modern day Nick Nolte high.
