BMW Powered Motorhome? 1986 Vixen 21 TD

Sometime back in the middle of the 1980s there was a small company out of Michigan that produced 587 examples of a custom aero-styled recreational vehicle with a turbo-diesel BMW inline-6 engine hanging out back and powering the rear wheels.  Styling was done by Bill Collins (known for his work on the Delorean) and the beast was intended to be the "sports car" of RVs, with a low center of gravity, a 100 mph top speed, and a manual gearbox.  Read more about the Vixen here.    Find this 1986 Vixen TD 21 Motorhome here on eBay bidding for $3,050 reserve-not-met with $11,000 buy-it-now located in Warren, ME with 1 day to go.

Bearded Spock Universe: 1975 International Harvester Scout II Turbo Diesel

The early 1970s fuel crisis hit small domestic automakers (like International Harvester from Fort Wayne, Indiana) hard and they didn't have the resources to retool their entire fleet to meet the new requirements for emissions and fuel economy.  So...what did they do?  Only the most logical thing, which was to enter a joint venture with BMW to create turbo diesel powered Scout.  At least that what could have happened here...and then the car was transported from that universe via an inter-dimensional wormhole...you got any better ideas?  Find this 1975 International Harvester Scout II Turbo Diesel offered for $4,500 in Oakdale, CA via craigslist.

Heavy Oil Bimmer: 2009 BMW 335d

German diesel cars have been getting a lot of press lately.  Unfortunately, it has been for shady goings-on by VW to meet emissions requirements.  If you do a little looking around, however, you can find a diesel from Deutschland that might make you change your opinion about the oily stuff for the better.  Find this 2009 BMW 335d for sale in Roseville, MN for $13,990 via craigslist.

Quantum Mechanics: 1984 Volkswagen Quantum Turbo Diesel Wagon

Quantum is defined in physics by Merriam-Webster as "the smallest amount of many forms of energy (such as light)".  Passat is a made up word by Germans for a large family car produced by Volkswagen.  Dasher was Santa's main reindeer until that upstart Rudolph with his nose so bright came along to guide the sleigh.  Find this 1984 Volkswagen Quantum Turbo Diesel Wagon for sale in Bellingham, WA for $3,300 via craigslist.

Turbo Diesel 5-Spd Nirvana! 1999 BMW 525tds

Those of us in the land of the free will often bitch 'n' moan about the price of gas, particularly when it hits some arbitrary threshold -- three dollars a gallon, I can get water for less! -- but our friends across the pond have paid taxed through the roof fuel prices for decades.  For this reason the luxury sedan buyers in the States made have paid more for a big monster 4.0 liter V8 in his E39 generation 5-series, but the European buyer would have opted instead for the 2.5 liter turbo diesel with manual gearbox.  Find this 1999 BMW 525tds offered for $10,900 in Lancaster, OH via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Turbo Diesel E38 5-Speed: 1996 BMW 725TDS

K2 Dreams Of A Seedy Eye: Musings About The Mercedes Benz W211

DT E-i-C Vince: The following story consists of words by DT Contributor K2 Mystery Car and illustrations by my 8 year old son Alex.

Nothing is absolute, with the debatable exceptions of this statement and death. – John Ralston Saul

I sleep like a rock. Maybe it’s a reflection of my IQ or maybe it’s connected to my shoe size but when my head hits the pillow, I’m out like a light. And I dream. Oh boy, do I dream. Now, they’re very rarely some risqué jive. No, mostly they’re intricate, detailed short films that contain characters I’ve never met or are vaguely familiar on some sort of adventure. Sometimes they’re frightening, occasionally they’re full of action and sometimes they’re awe inspiring.

15k: 2Good 2B True? 2011 BMW 335d Sedan

The discount bin on your local craigslist is a scary place.  Behind every great deal lurks a Nigerian prince looking for his next victim, but sometimes a good deal on a car might actually be a good deal.  Like this 2011 BMW 335d Sedan offered for $15,900 in SF Valley, CA via craigslist.

3k: Not Quite the Slowest Car Ever: 1982 Buick Opel by Isuzu, turbo diesel

In November, we officially labeled the 1981 Isuzu I-Mark diesel as "The Slowest Car Ever." Its 1.8-liter all-motor oil burner turned out just 51 horsepower, which must have given owners plenty of time to enjoy the Redder-Than-A-Redneck-In-A-Red-State interior. The 1.8-liter Isuzu diesel unit is back, this time with a few tricks up its sleeves. In 1982, diesel Isuzus were blessed with Bosch VE fuel injection and an optional turbo, which resulted in 72 whopping horsepower. Time to surprise some Firebirds at the drag strip. Find this 1982 Buick Opel by Isuzu turbo diesel hatch for sale in Austin, TX for $2,500 via craigslist.

10k: Heavy Fuel: 1962 Ford Econoline Pickup, OM617 Diesel Swap

The formula for restoring or modifying an old American work truck from the 1960s  goes something like this: Step 1 Find Chevy 350 V8, Step 2 Install Chevy 350 V8, Step 4 Profit.   Sometimes you might consider using a large V8 from the original manufacturer of the vehicle, but under no circumstances should your pick a donor engine from the worlds slowest luxury sedan from the 1980s.  Unless you are insane.  Find this  1962 Ford Econoline Pickup with OM617 diesel power here on eBay currently bidding for $5,200 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go, located in Lakeland, FL.

1k: Roadkill: 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD W116

10k: Out Of This World: 1965 Ford Galaxie Turbo Diesel Cummins 12V

The 3rd generation Ford Galaxie (1965-1968) was a behemoth of a full-sized automobile, and the sedan version crushes the scales at something like 3800 lbs dry...which isn't much more than the typical BMW 3-series these days, but back in the 1960s it was huge.  Not so huge that it would require a heavy duty turbocharged diesel engine up front...but...that is exactly what happened with this next combination of heavy fuel and patina.  Find this 1965 Ford Galaxie Turbo Diesel Cummins 12V offered for an undisclosed price (or trade) here on craigslist located in Atlanta, GA. Tip from Andy L.

3k: Waste Not: 1985 Volvo 760, D24T swap

On paper, a rear-wheel drive diesel Volvo wagon with a 5-speed sounds like an ideal formula for a daily hauler. But "even communism works on paper," as any smug Huffington Post reader will tell you. The problem wasn't necessarily the slower-than-walking D24 diesel engine or its 75-horsepower output, but the 3,200-lb weight they were saddled with. Both problems have been fixed in this lightened, stiffened, turbocharged wagon that redefines what a daily driver vehicle should offer. Find this 1985 Volvo 760 wagon with turbo-diesel swap in San Antonio, TX for $2,950 via craigslist.
