5k Flash: 1978 Triumph Spitfire, 39k miles

After completing just 39,000 miles, this carotene-hued ankle-biter is listed by the owner's parents. They say he wanted his ownership to be as reliable as possible. You've got to hand it to him for finding the least expensive route of British sports car ownership: not driving it. It's also possible that after parking it in the garage one day, its existence merely slipped his mind. This is an experience many of us have with Idaho. Find this 1978 Triumph Spitfire in Boise, ID for $4,500 via craigslist.

3k: Diplomatic Impunity: 1972 Ford Maverick 4-Door

Ford may have never made a 4-door Mustang, but they added an extra set of doors to the Maverick  and built what is possibly the world's only 4-door pony car.  I know that the prevailing opinion on the classic car market is that 4-door cars are almost never valuable, especially if there was a 2-door version of the same car...but this green joker just might be cool enough to change that perception.  Find this 1972 Ford Maverick 4-Door currently bidding for $2,600 on eBay, located in Fremont, OH with about an hour to go.  Tip from mrkwong in the comments of this week's Mid Week Match-Up.

5k: Rotary Powered: 1970 VW Magnum 246 Ferrari Dino Replica

The Magnum kit car uses a tubular chassis and fiberglass body with VW mechanical bits to hold it on the road...but...it uses a Mazda rotary engine for motivation.  It won't be mistaken for a real Dino by any car nut, but it doesn't look like a Fiero and that's gotta mean something.  Find this 1970 VW Magnum 246 Ferrari Dino Replica currently bidding for $4,050 with a few hours to go, located in Toms River, NJ.

1k Flash: Oddball Import: 1974 Opel Manta A

The Manta is a small  2+2 coupe from Opel, the Rüsselsheim, Germany based GM subsidiary.  Opel marketing in the US was always a bit strange, and they were typically sold at Buick dealers but via an Opel ordering system and generally causing nothing but confusion and grief for the Buick dealers.  Fast forward 40 years and a classic Opel is actually a cool car given its rarity and 'oddity-appeal'.  Find this 1974 Opel Manta A for sale in Moscow, ID for $1,450 via craigslist.

5k Flash: Pickup The Pieces: 1965 Dodge A100 Pickup

The A100 was a lineup of cab-over style vans from Chrysler's Dodge brand and sold from 1964-1970.  Today they are sought after for their funky looks, basic reliability and form-follows-function utility.  This A100 is the domestic equivalent of the VW Van, but without the 450 window variants that command stupid amounts of money.  Find this 1965 Dodge A100 Pickup for sale in Kingsville, OH currently bidding on ebay for $3,250 reserve-not-met with 11 hours to go.

5k Flash: Thor's Calabash: 1966 SAAB 96 2-Stroke

The calabash was the one of the first cultivated foods in the world, grown over 8,000 years ago for use as a vessel for holding fluids and known as the 'bottle gourd.'   The exterior color of the calabash isn't exactly what you'd expect on a sporting automobile, but it is essentially what was used on a number of classic 60s/70s machines.  Find this 1966 SAAB 96 2-Stroke covered in a gourdgeous shade of green for sale in SF Bay Area, CA for $6,500 via craigslist.  Thanks to tip from Kaibeezy T.

1k Flash: Black Plate And Bondo Beauty Queen: 1969 Ford Club Wagon Van

Today's DT flash feature is covered in a fine patina of bondo and honesty.  The seller doesn't try to convince us this turd is a gem, in fact he starts off with the statement "Not a good van to try and impress a gal on first date."  Truer words haven't been published on craigslist.  Find this 1969 Ford Club Wagon Van for sale in La Cañada (not to be confused with 'O Canada' - the Canadian national anthem), CA for $1500 via craigslist.

3k Flash: Clean 1980 Volvo 242 on Turbobricks

The Volvo 242 continues to be a good buy on the used Euro sedan market because it offers a decent, albeit slow, driving experience for cheap.  The 200 series Volvos are equipped with rack-and-pinion steering, rear wheel drive and 4-wheel disc brakes at a front drive econobox price point.  If you are in the market for a solid basis for a 242 project car, check out this 1980 Volvo 242 for $2800 in Vermont via the turbobricks forum.

5k Flash: Burn, Burn, Burn, To The Wick ; 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback; Project

The Heart Song 'Barracuda' reached the 11th spot on the Billboard Top 100 in 1977 and despite what you may think, has nothing to do with the Plymouth Barracuda.  The (Plymouth) Barracuda pre-dated the release of Ford's Mustang, but they don't call the sporty 2+2 genre the 'Flesh-eating-fish-car'...it's the Pony-car, probably because the Barracuda was not nearly as successful from a sales perspective.  But don't let the lack of buyers when new dissuade you from picking up a classic 2nd generation 'Cuda.  Find this 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback project for sale in El Paso, TX, currently bidding at $3,200 on ebay with 2 days to go.

5k Flash: Automatic Roundie; 1972 BMW 2002

The early BMW 2002 round taillight coupes are sought after classics with a lively enthusiast base but a large population of aging versions that keeps the prices from going 'all 911' on us.  We aren't talking about lunatics crashing planes into buildings, we are talking about the original Porsche 911 (901 version) price insanity that started about 15 years ago and only recently has cooled a bit.  Find this affordable 1972 BMW 2002 automatic available for sale in Pacifica, CA currently bidding on ebay for $4,051 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go.

15k Flash: 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 Shorty Truck

The Volkswagen Type 2 was sold around the world as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus.  Today, the Type 2 is a cult classic and original versions can fetch some serious bucks at a Barrett-Jackson style auction, but that didn't stop any number of customizers from creating crazy versions of the Type 2 back when you could buy one for the cost of a new pair of Air Jordans.  Find this 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 Shorty Bus for sale in Woonsocket, RI, currently bidding for $8,000 reserve-not-met with a little less than 2 days to go (interesting note: this same truck failed to meet reserve last week at just about $15k, so the seller may have unrealistic expectations baked into his reserve price.)

5k Flash: Frugal Touring; 1999 BMW 540iT Wagon

The E39 BMW 540i is one of the many BMW performance bargains available on the used car market today.  Prices for the all-alloy V8 engined cars start around the price of a winter beater and even the nice/rare examples trade for well less than the price of new Civic.  This 1999 BMW 540iT Wagon has potential to be a great sleeper for the new owner, and is for sale in Atlanta, GA for $6900 via bimmerforums.com.

15k Flash: 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

The Alfa Romeo 105 series coupes are one of a few remaining classic Italian machines available for DT money (less than $15k).  The 1971-76 GTV with its iconic twin headlights is the result of a masterful piece of art from Giorgetto Giugiaro of the Bertone design house.  This 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 is for sale in Ontario, Canada, currently bidding on ebay for $12,500.

5k Flash: 1970 Opel GT 4-spd; Extremely Clean

The Opel GT was a compact sports car by GM's European subsidiary Opel and is often called the poor man's Corvette in reference to its styling similarity with the C3.  This minty clean 1970 Opel GT 4-spd is currently bidding on ebay for a very reasonable $3685 with 3 hours to go in Warwick, NY.

10k Flash: 1990 Nissan 300ZX w/VH45 V8 Swap

The Z32 generation Nissan Z was available with a natuarally aspirated or turbocharged V6 - which while fast and fun, is lacking the aural charm and off-the-line torque of a big V8.  Thankfully, lunatics with spare time and access to power tools have given us the ability to buy a used 300ZX with an Infiniti Q45 V8 shoehorned into the front, such as this 1990 Nissan 300ZX w/ VH45 V8 swap for sale in Danbury, CT, currently selling on ebay for $10,850 buy-it-now.
