S197 Fever: 2005-2009 Ford Mustang GT Market Update

Ever since I got to get close/personal with Ford's 2015 Mustang at the LA Auto Show a few days ago, I've had a touch of pony fever.  Truth be told, ever since the 2005 restyle, I've craned my neck when one drives by and soaked in the retro-styled design.  Of course the idea of spending $30k+ on a car (that wasn't a depreciated $150k classic) is completely foreign to this tightwad, but I knew it was only a few years before prices dropped. Time marched on, and with the release of the new Mustang, the time couldn't be better to pickup an early S197 generation Mustang -- but we are going to focus on basic V8, manual trans examples and see if we can find a Bullitt, (GT/CS) California Special or Shelby GT in the mix.

The Ford Mustang S197 was introduced to much fanfare and ballyhoo in late 2004 - and for good reason; this was the first complete re-design of everybody's favorite pony car since 1978. Sure, there had been a few major revisions to the venerable Fox platform, but 26 years into its lifespan it was a bit long in the tooth. The derby was over; Ford sent ol' Foxy to the glue factory and rolled out the replacement with chassis code S197. Today the "retro-futurism" styling looks a bit dated but the 5-speed GT is depreciated to the point where it's now a Daily Turismo value. 10k: Speeding Bullitt: 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

The fifth generation S197 Mustang was launched in 2005 with well executed retrostyle design and more power from the available V6 and V8 engines.  The design was clean and simple in the V6 models, but got some fancy wings and junk in the V8 GT trim, unless you got the limited Bullitt edition from 2008 or 2009.  The Bullitt package was an appearance and power package available only on GT models in dark highland green (or black) and added some serious Steve McQueen cool to the S197.
