Track Puffer: 1985 Merkur XR4ti Terminator Swap

The euro inspired Merkur XR4ti was similar to the SVO Mustang in size and purpose.  Both cars shared the 2.3 turbo 4 cylinder Lima engine which was a capable performer in its day.  However, today's feature track car ditched it's 2.3 engine for a 4.6 supercharged V8 from a 2003 Mustang Terminator which was the Hellcat of it's day at 390hp.  Seeing that going fast and having a competitive car costs real money, buying a proven car that needs a bit of TLC could potentially save the buyer a lot of coin.  Find this 1985 Merkur XR4ti for sale in Newtown, CT for $9,000 via craigslist.

More Cars More Mess: 1999 and 2000 Jaguar XJR

DT readers who live in parts of the country that do not use road salt in the winter will breathe a sigh of relief after reading this piece.  Parts cars are a great resource for keeping other cars on the road if you actually get around to using them that way.  Today's pair of Jags is what happens when you double down on a problem and then do not get around to actually fixing anything.  Two needy supercharged XJR's for cheap is a tough sell logistically for most any buyer- two trips for pick up, two parking spaces, double the issues to address, etc.  Find these 1999 and 2000 Jaguar XJR's for sale in Rowley, MA for $2,000 via craigslist.

More, More, More: 1991 BMW 750il Supercharged 6 speed

Puffer On A 4x4: 1998 Range Rover HSE Cameron Concepts Supercharged

A little more power is welcome in most any vehicle, but especially helpful in moving a 5,000 lb British SUV.  Cameron Concepts out of San Diego, CA put out a CARB legal supercharger and factory style upgrade kit in 1997.  The Rover engine was a descendant of the old Buick 215ci.  These 4.6 engines had a reputation for head gasket and cylinder liner issues.  There is not a ton of information online about the company or the specs on the kit other than it uses a Eaton supercharger.  The company itself is no longer as its founder Peter Cameron passed away in 2007.  Find this 1998 Range Rover HSE 4.6 for sale in Holyoke Highlands, NY for $5,500 via craigslist.

Is That Stock? 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage

The Chevrolet Monza was released for the 1975 model year on a chassis shared with the tiny Vega, but it was designed to have power from an exotic rotary GM-Wankel engine.  Unfortunately (or fortunately) the rotary was scrapped after GM engineers couldn't figure out that wankels are total piles of junk, so GM shoved a V8 inside and called it a day...except for the versions that were sent to Michigan Auto Techniques for the "Mirage" treatment.  Find this 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage offered for $13,000 in McHenry, IL via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!

Judson Supercharged: 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible

The first generation Chevrolet Corvair (1960-1964) was the car caught in the crossfire when a young lawyer trying to make a name for himself decided to take on the auto industry.  Don't get me wrong, the auto industry was no paradigm of virtue and the combined effects of tetra-ethyl lead and air pollution is something that society is still recovering from...but the Corvair was a victim in Nader's relentless political maneuvering, a fact only exacerbated by GM's strong arm response.  But the bottom line is that Detroit wasn't going to produce anything as innovative as an air cooled rear-engined compact after the beating it took over the Corvair.  Find this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible offered for $12,200 located in Cincinnati, OH via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

 The MGB has been a frequent visitor on these pages, so much you might think we've gotten out of hand, but this next one is just too good to pass up.  Another V8 swap? 10k: Fast Box: 1998 Saleen Explorer XP8

In 1998 Saleen started to modify a few Ford Explorers in the same way it had created scores of modified Ford Mustangs.  The basic Saleen recipe was to take a Ford product and add a supercharger, body kit, a few badges and significant digits to the price tag.  Saleen was one of the few aftermarket companies to be certified as an OEM, so Saleen actually issued its own vehicle identification numbers (VIN).  Internet rumor lists the total production volume of the XP8 at around 125.  Find this 1998 Saleen Explorer XP8 for sale in Fremont, CA for $13,900 via craigslist.

33 of 50: Angelina: 1989 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe

Ford tried very hard to compete with the likes of the BMW 6-series when they created the MN12 Thunderbird (and Mercury Cougar twin). Today they may seem hopelessly outdated, but consider that the '89 T-Bird featured an independent rear and a double-wishbone front suspension, which tends to be the ideal setup for wheel camber control and ultimate cornering grip. For the top of the line Super Coupe (SC) Ford added a screw type supercharger and intercooler to the 3.8L V6 to get 210 hp and 315 lb-ft, along with a Mazda 5-spd manual trans, 4-wheel disc brakes, adjustable shocks, ABS, a limited slip rear diff and a wider wheel/tire combo. The end result was a capable aero-styled offering that may appreciate someday - but for now they are still dirt cheap! Toyota introduced its Japanese version of the Fiat X1/9 in 1984 as the MR2, a name shortened from Mid-engined Runabout 2-seater.  It was powered by the A-series 4-banger taken from the Corolla and was relished in its day for handling and being good cheap fun, but the supercharged version was actually quick.  Find this 1989 Toyota MR2 Supercharged located in Skagit, WA for $5,295 via craigslist.

The turn signal was first introduced to the public in 1938 in a Buick and described as a "Flash-way directional signal."  A few years later Buick added a self canceling feature to the signal stalk and by the 1950s most US states required functioning turn signals on all new cars.  It is ironic that Buick introduced the turn signal as most often the offenders of DWS (Driving While Signaling...for miles in a straight line) are Buick drivers...typically those who were...ahem...alive when the first signals were introduced.  Drive really slow in the fast lane with your turn signal on with this 1997 Buick Riviera Coupe, equipped with supercharged V6 and for sale in Huntingdon Valley, PA and currently bidding for $1,525 via ebay.

5k: SAAB Gone InSAANE...Supercharged 1971 SAAB 95 V4 Wagon

Here in the US it's not exactly rare to see supercharged '70s wagons as owner-built hot rods, be they mid-sized muscle cars like a Chevelle or Torino, or more esoteric creations like a Pinto wagon hot rod. But the editors of DT can definitively say that we've never seen a supercharged, V4 powered SAAB 95 hot rod wagon. That's because SAAB wasn't/isn't one of our major national automakers and does not have a big following here - leave that to Sweden, where this rip-snorting sinister looking front wheel drive wagon was built originally and then born again, under the sign of boost. It would be quite the street terror here, and we sure it is in its home country too. 5k: 1984 Pontiac Fiero w/3.8 V6 Supercharged

The name Fiero means proud in Italian (not flammable like we were told many years ago) or ferocious in Spanish - neither of which apply particularly well to a stock Fiero.  Still, it was nice to see General Motors attempt to keep up with the Japanese by building a mid-engined sports-car for the masses and we have to applaud the effort.  The Fiero would be a much better car with a more meaty lump shoved into the back and that is exactly what the seller of this 1984 Pontiac Fiero with 3.8 liter supercharged V6 did, and it was being sold on ebay, but failed to meet the reserve at $4,450 - but expect this to come back to ebay with a more realistic reserve.
