#92 of 280: 1987 Saleen Mustang

In 1983, a former racer (and SoCal car guy) named Steve Saleen launched his own aftermarket tuning company that was in many ways a repeat of what that Texas chicken farmer did with Fords in the 1960s.  Saleen Performance rapidly became a small automotive OEM (similar to Shelby Automotive) and as such released cars that while based on (and using parts from) Ford's Mustang, they were technically, according to the Dept of Transportation, their own make.  Find this 1987 Saleen Mustang offered for $16,500 located in Los Angeles, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

DTO: Seller Submission: 2006 Ford Mustang Saleen S281E Extreme

The 5th generation Mustang (code named S-197) was released in 2005 to much fanfare and ballyhooing from Mustangers, pundits and retro-style enthusiasts.  It transformed the previously dull new-edge/SN-95 shape into a sexy retro styled beauty while maintaining much of the classic formula under the skin but adding a few ponies.  Except when Steve Saleen got his hands on the Mustang, and then things got, meaty, expensive, and fast, in a hurry.  Find this 2006 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 Extreme on eBay with a starting bid of $51k, located in Saint James, NY.  Seller submission from Artur.

10k: Shutter Speed: 2004 Saleen N2O Focus

Horsepower has its price. You pay for it even when you aren't using it, a conundrum that is central to developing technology like forced induction and cylinder deactivation. But what if there was a way to have extra horsepower by literally flipping a switch? That's right, N2O means exactly what you think it means. Better yet, it's all stock and extremely rare; this is #88 of 88 for the pre-facelifted Saleen Focuses. Find this 2004 Saleen N2O Focus for $10,500 in Chicago, IL. 10k: Lost In The Woods: 1988 Saleen Ranger

Steve Saleen was a former racing driver who started his own aftermarket tuning company in Southern California in 1983.  Saleen Performance rapidly became a small automotive OEM (similar to Shelby Automotive) and as such released cars that while based on (and using parts from) Ford's Mustang; they were technically according to the Dept of Transportation, a Saleen.  The company's future has been in question recently as Steve left in 2009 and various questionable MBA run entities have owned it, sold it, and gone bankrupt, but recent twitter activity indicates that Steve may have rejoined the company.  Find this 1988 Saleen Ford Ranger for sale in  Arvada, CO currently bidding for $8,600 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go.

10k: Fast Box: 1998 Saleen Explorer XP8

In 1998 Saleen started to modify a few Ford Explorers in the same way it had created scores of modified Ford Mustangs.  The basic Saleen recipe was to take a Ford product and add a supercharger, body kit, a few badges and significant digits to the price tag.  Saleen was one of the few aftermarket companies to be certified as an OEM, so Saleen actually issued its own vehicle identification numbers (VIN).  Internet rumor lists the total production volume of the XP8 at around 125.  Find this 1998 Saleen Explorer XP8 for sale in Fremont, CA for $13,900 via craigslist.

10k: Saleen Solution: 1998 Saleen S281 'Vert

Steve Saleen was a former Formula Atlantic racing driver who started his own aftermarket tuning company in 1983.  Saleen Performance rapidly became a small automotive OEM and as such released cars that while based on Ford's Mustang were technically a Saleen.  The company's future has been in question recently as Steve left in 2009 and various questionable MBA run entities have owned it, sold it, and gone bankrupt.  Frankly it doesn't matter for a used Saleen, so we are happy to share this 1998 Saleen S281 convertible with supercharger for sale in San Francisco, CA for $8,500 via craigslist.  Another solid SF Bay area find from Kaibeezy.
