The Cadillac Eldorado was first built as a convertible halo car on the Series 62 platform in 1953, but became its own unique thing in 1967 when it was transferred to a front-drive platform and designated a
personal luxury coupe where it survived until 2002. The personal luxury coupe market segment is somewhat of a dying breed as OEMs focus on Nürburgring lap times and meaningless performance statistics like 0-60 and 1/4 mile when 99.99 percent of the owners of a new Cadillac will never drive on a track. The Buick Riviera appeared on the automotive landscape in 1963 as a personal luxury coupe on the E-body platform (later shared with the Eldorado and Toronado), but in rear-drive only configuration. A few decades later the turbocharged version of the Riviera shared its V6 with Buick's Regal cousin (and the LeSabre had a turbo V6 version too), but the Grand National has a cult following and culty prices to boot.
