20k: Pile O Parts: 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 1300

I will admit that I am a sucker for classic Alfa Romeo coupes.  Step-nose GTVs sing a particularly sweet siren song, but the early Giulietta Sprint is the only Alfa that I could kill to own (for reference, I would maim someone for a GTV, and for a 164 I would verbally abuse a complete stranger.)  To feature this Giulietta sprint will require breaking one of DT's own rules, which is "don't buy someone elses pile of parts"...but...it is about as cheap a Giulietta you'll ever see.  Find this 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 1300 currently bidding for $19,100 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go on ebay, located in Thousand Oaks, CA.

5k: Orange Crush: 1969 Subaru 360 Young S

The Subaru 360 microcar was built by Fuji Heavy Industries from 1958-1971.  It shares its rear engine layout, roomy interior and brutal slowness with Volkswagen's Beetle, but is more matched with a Fiat 500 for size/comfort. This example first appeared on the DT cardar back in March from a tip from Kaibeezy but the price keeps dropping week after week and it was recently sent in by FuelTruck.  Find this 1969 Subaru 360 Young S offered for $6,200 in Daly City, CA via craigslist.

15k: Zetec Power: 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Bostig Conversion

The Volkswagen Vanagon Type 2 (T3) was launched in 1980 as a replacement to the aging VW Transporter (aka Hippie Bus, Kombi, MicroBus) Type 2 (T2).  The Vanagon (as it was called in North America) continued the VW tradition of air cooled flat-4 in the back, but was styled in a more angular fashion and added all sorts of amenities like power steering, air conditioning and power door locks.  Don't get me wrong, it is still a thoroughly horrible driving experience akin to riding on the back of a three-legged camel, but it is much more modern and less tippy or terrifying than driving a T2 Bus.  However, you can fix the power deficiency with a kit from a company called Bostig who supplies everything you need to convert to Ford Zetec power.  Find this 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Bostig Conversion currently bidding for $5,100 and $17,800 BIN with 6 days to go in Jean, NV via ebay.

5k: Diplomats Only: 2002 Lancia Thesis 2.0 Turbo

The Lancia Thesis is a hideous controversially styled sedan penned by a disciple of the man who mangled BMW's design direction for generations. According to a clearly self authored Wikipedia article, Chris Bangle hired American designer Michael Robinson into the Fiat design group and later Robinson became the head of Lancia (part of Fiat at the time) design.  During his tenure at Lancia, Robinson designed the Thesis and equally egregiously uniquely styled Lancia Ypsilon.  Find this 2002 Lancia Thesis 2.0 Turbo offered for $4,500 in Chevy Chase, MD via craigslist.

10k: Mopar Fastback: 1965 Plymouth Barracuda V8 318ci

The Plymouth Barracuda introduced the world to fastback shaped pony cars a full two weeks before Ford's Mustang was released in April 1964. It is a good thing that the Mustang outsold the Barracuda considerable because otherwise we'd be left the strange term fishcar for sporty compact 2+2 fastback/coupes with long hood styling and rear-wheel-drive.  That wouldn't do at all.  However, the Barracuda was a cool car and can be found for decent price, such as this 1965 Plymouth Barracuda offered for $8,499 or best offer via ebay, located in Los Angeles, CA.

5k: Düsseldorf Transporter: 1987 Mercedes-Benz T2 711D

The Mercedes-Benz T2 platform is a family of light commercial vehicles built after the O309 Omnibus and before the Sprinter.   The T2 was manufactured as a box van, flatbed, or minibus and was powered by a variety of Mercedes infamously durable OM-series inline-4/inline-5 diesel engines.  The idea of sharing a powerplant between a luxury car and a commercial truck was as totally bonkers then as it is now (imagine a new Cadillac CTS sharing an engine with a GMC truck!).  Find this 1987 Mercedes Benz T2 711D offered for $5,900 CAD ($5,347 USD at time of printing) in Airdrie, AB, Canada via kijiji.ca.

10k: Ummm...What Is It? 1989 UMM Alter II Phase II

The UMM Alter II is a Portuguese 4X4 vehicle built for agricultural, industrial and commercial uses.  It is as close as you can get to a PDM (Portuguese Domestic Market) Jeep and was built from 1986 to 1994 by União Metalo-Mecânica (UMM). I started my Z hunt in December of 2013. Well, let me back up. I started my Z hunt in 1991. This was the year that I became aware of them through my uncle who had a few he used to race. Being a 10 year old on a limited budget was prohibitive to purchasing cars however, so I stuck with Hot Wheels and Matchbox until it became financially viable to go after the real thing.
