Hipster's Delight: 1989 Nissan Pao

The term hipster is tossed around as a descriptive or a pejorative -- but when applied to goods, there are a few requirements.  First, the item needs to be strange or unusual -- think Reed's Ginger Brew instead of Coke/Pepsi, and next the item needs to be overpriced, like a $12 IPA.  Therefore, if you were looking for the perfect hipster car, this 1989 Nissan Pao seems to fit the bill, find it on Craigslist offered for $9,400 in Baltimore, MD.  Tip from Torrance.

Thursday Twister: Hipster Cars

The modern hipster, known in the Pacific region as Millenius Westhollywoodus and Atlantic coast Unshavia Eastvillagus are renowned for being proficient at a few tasks.  First is turning garbage into art -- an old pile of used hypodermic needles, streptococcus soaked cotton swabs, and camel filters may look like toxic waste to you, but the hipster will re-purpose anything into decorative art for his/her tiny house.  The other thing hipsters are known for its throwing inordinate sums of money at things that should be inexpensive -- e.g. the $63 t-shirt,  the $250 ice chest, and the $50k Porsche 912 -- but today we ask the question, what cars do they own/drive?

20k: Pininfarina Project: 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word "classic" as: serving as a standard of excellence :  of recognized value, traditional, enduring.  The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider is a classic in every sense of the word.  The convertible (spider) design by Pininfarina was launched in 1958 and is just as pretty today as the day it was relased.  It might not be stunningly gorgeous like an E-Type Jaguar, or manly like a C2 Corvette, but it simply oozes class.  Unfortunately, most examples are proportionally priced to the level of cool, so you'll need to find a project if you want one for cheap.  Find this  1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider currently bidding for $20,600 with 1 day to go, here on eBay located in Brunswick, GA.  Tip from Ignacio.

2k: Whip Or Wreck: 1969 Ford Cortina 1600 GT

Surf craigslist (or eBay) and you'll see an incredible variety of ad styles.  I typically stay away from CAP'T CAPSLOCK, Fuzzy McPhotos and the thumb over the license plate guy, while ads with clear pics/description are worth a look.  Unfortunately, the best deals you will ever find on a classic are often from photo-free ads with a few lines and a dirt cheap price.  Find this 1969 Ford Cortina 1600 GT offered here on craigslist in Corona, CA for $2,500 located in Corona, CA.

5k: HipsterAce: 1986 Toyota Cargo Van

In the 1970s Toyota decided to enter the light passenger van segment, think of it as a precursor to the modern minivan.  The MasterAce was introduced in 1982 in Japan.  It was called the Space Cruiser in Europe, the Tarango in Australia, but the totally uninspired Van in North America.  Find this 1986 Toyota Cargo Van offered for $6,900 in Portland, OR via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

15k: Minty Classic: 1965 Mercury Comet

We've mentioned before how the Ford Falcon is the thinking man's version of the Mustang -- offering the same rugged simplicity and interchangeable parts, but for a cheaper condition-to-price tradeoff.  What if we said there was a thinking man's version of the Falcon?  An Inception-like cheaper version of the cheaper version, complete with more rarity and more funky good looks, all the while saving you cash.  Find this 1965 Mercury Comet currently bidding for $16,800 reserve-not-met with less than 24 hours to go on ebay, located in Lakeland, FL.

10k: Another BMW? 1974 BMW 2002 Tii

I can see the hate mail now.  Another BMW guys?  It is true, the front page is covered in Bavaria's finest right now...but sometimes when it rains rear-drive classics for dirt cheap prices the best thing you can do is just roll with it.  Seriously, what is the worst thing that can happen?  Find this 1974 BMW 2002 Tii offered for $9,800 via craigslist in Corte Madera, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

5k: Acceptable Elitism: 1980 Lotus Elite 504

Are you searching for an oddball weekend car that won't cost you a fortune to buy or maintain, but want others to think it does?  Look no further than the Lotus Elite, a shooting brake style beast that was the world's most expensive 4-cylinder car when launched and is now traded on the weekends for a sizable Beanie Baby collection. Find this 1980 Lotus Elite 504 offered for $4,500 in Middletown, NJ via craigslist.  Tip from David K.

15k: Flintstones Special: 1967 Porsche 912

The Porsche 912 was the entry level offering from Porsche before the 914 was released and used a flat-4 engine similar to what powered the old bathtub shaped 356.  A few years ago the 912 market was in the dumps, but somebody figured out that they were cheaper to run than a vintage 911 and offered all the looks but with a little less performance.  Its not like a low spec classic 911 was a fast car to begin with, so it really isn't a big loss to go from 0-60mph in 10 seconds to 12...right?  Anyway, the 912 market picked up and finding one that runs/drives with a nice coat of paint for around $15k is good...right?  Hope you've got an up-to-date tetanus shot.  Find this 1967 Porsche 912 currently bidding for $16,600 with 2 days to go on ebay, located in Woodland Hills, CA.

15k: What Gives? 1969 Ford Cortina Deluxe Estate Mk II

Today's next feature was under the DT radar a few months back, but for whatever reason (probably a batch of freshly El Camino-ized something-or-others arrives on craigslist) we didn't post it. Naturally, the car was panegyrically written up on bringatrailer.com in February of this year to much acclaim, accolades, back slapping and joyous trumpets playing a chorus of hallelujah in the comments.  So, the big question...why hasn't it sold?  Further perplexing, the asking price has gone..up...?  Anyway, find this 1969 Ford Cortina Deluxe Estate Mk II with Ford 302 V8 and T5 transmission offered for $13,495.

5k: Hecka Cheap: 1965 Mercedes-Benz 190C Heckflosse

The W110 Heckflosse (Fintail) was built from 1961-1968 as the affordable 4-cylinder option from Mercedes-Benz and is instantly recognizable from its 50's throwback tailfins and single headlights with vestigial pontoon styling up front.  With an automatic transmission, the W110 will be excruciatingly slow car in today's traffic, but it exudes a charm, charisma and tank-like solidity that is unmatched by the cookie-cutter crap that is squeezed from the sphincters of today's automobile factories.  Find this 1965 Mercedes Benz 190C Heckflosse offered for $3,600 near Portland, OR via craigslist.  Another great tip from the tipper only known as FuelTruck.

5k: Pao-der Puff: 1989 Nissan Pao

In the late 1980s Nissan launched a series of retro-styled cars in what was called the Pike series and consisted of the Be-1, Pao, Figaro and S-Cargo (and yes, the S-Cargo does look like a snail).  The Pike cars beat the New Beetle, New Mini, PT Cruiser to the retro-style market, but keeping everything in perspective --the old Mini had been retro-styled since about 1970, the Beetle since about 1960.  What was old is now new again...et cetera.  Anyway, if late 80's Japanese retro-cars are you thing, you might be interested in this 1989 Nissan Pao offered for $6,999 in Seattle, WA via craigslist.  Tip from Luke.

10k: Caution Wet Paint: 1972 BMW Bavaria 3.0

Anyone who has ever been involved with a business decision will recognize the conundrum of make vs. buy.  It isn't just limited to businesses like BMW needing to decide if they should make their own fuel injection systems or outsource it, it also applies to people remodeling a kitchen; DIY or contractor?  The make vs. buy decision is made up front when you buy a used classic; spend bucks up front for a nice one or get a project.  On expensive makes/models we tend to look at ones that need work to keep our outlay minimal, but on less expensive examples, it is best to spend the previous owner's money and get one that is already nice, like this 1972 BMW Bavaria 3.0 offered for $11,888 in Sammammammammamish, WA via craigslist.

DTO: 4-Door E30 M3: 1988 BMW 320is Italian Export

If you love the screaming S14 four banger in the E30 M3 but shy away from its boy racer box flares and 2-door only configuration, then perhaps a trip to Italy is in order.  In order to avoid VAT and higher vehicle taxes for engines exceeding 2.0 liters, BMW created a de-stroked version of the S14 for Italy and Portugal in 2 and 4 door versions that was called the 320is.  It isn't a car you'd look twice at in person, but for those in the know it could be a bimmer-licious experience for about the price of a new 135i.  Find this 1988 BMW 320is Italian Export offered for $35,000, located in West Marin, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy. The DTO (Daily Turismo Omologato) is a rare or interesting example of a DT-friendly classic or performance vehicle, but priced somewhere above the self imposed DT cap of $20k.

3k: Funny Seller: 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL W126

Sometimes a car comes to our attention not because it is a cool car, but because it comes wrapped in a funny advertisement and the invectives/hyperbole/nonsense normally reserved for our review are pre-written in the sellers own words.  This particular ad is not only knee-slapping good times, but it is a great car at a fair price too.  Find this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL is offered for $2,750 in North Dallas, TX via craigslist.  Tip from Ryan.

10k: 21k Miles: 1978 BMW 320i

The E21 generation BMW 3-series is a great way to get into a clean classic without breaking the bank.  The best low mile and stock examples are starting to demand premium money but it is still a great time to get into the market before it takes off and leaves you behind.  Find this 1978 BMW 320i with 21k miles on the odometer for sale in Woodstock, GA for $9,000 via craigslist.
